Episode 67 - Unique Communion of Mind

If it had planned better I would have had a Halloween specific mix for today.  Instead this one is dark and weird enough to fit the holiday. Maybe next year I'll plan better and get a themed mix ready, something other than all the tracks named "Halloween" in my collection (though that's not a terrible idea).

It shouldn't work, but it does.  Where else will you heard Buckethead, Coil, Four Tet and Bruce Springsteen in the same hour?

00:00 Buckethead - KFC Skin Piles A1 (edit)
01:18 Praxis - Blast / War Machine Dub
05:00 The Damage Manual - Sunset Gun (Full Monty Sunny Orb Up mix)
09:59 Raime - Your Cast Will Tire

Episode 66 - A Bias Towards Action

Some chill electronic via a rare mix from Orbital, through some more drum and bass and dub, to laptoptronica, and getting into some harsher territory before turning to a nice dark electro track to close it.  Lots of fun to be had on this journey.  I included the Moby track from the "see the light tour" promo cassette, form my first rave in 1993.  That was a great night, and a treat to see Moby, Orbital, Aphex Twin before any of them could fill a stadium on their own for a concert.

Episode 65 - The World is Full of Noise

I should have saved the title for a noise oriented mix, but since it a lyric to a wonderful Slowdive track included here I felt it was appropriate.  Overall, this mix continues to showcase my affection for late 90s alternative and shoegaze, with a lot of variety.

Episode 64 - Everything Was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt

Dark indie folk, to some gothic alternative rock, and ending with a bit of gospel.  I like this dark vibe for October, even though I made this mix sometime early 2017.  Love the Unto Ashes track, from the fan tribute to Coil "Loved Stolen and Deconstructed."  I almost contributed a track when they solicited from the email distro, but was not confident in my music skills at the time.  I had to throw in a track from locals Orbit Service, with a nod that Randall is now a touring member of Legendary Pink Dots.

00:00 Pascal Comelade/Pierre Bastien/Jac Berrocal/Jaki Liebezeit - Rock'n'Roll Station
05:00 Angels of Light - Sunset Park

Episode 62 - His Name Is Alive - pt1 Early Period

Where it began, and my last mix focusing on this group for a while.  They had a sound destined for 4AD records, yet they were utterly unique in their approach.  The dreamy, hazy, claustrophobic alternative pop was like nothing else I'd heard at the time.  I recall fondly staying up late and watching public access TV when they showed videos that didn't really fit on MTV; such was the brother's Quay directed Can't Go Wrong Without You.  I was forever hooked based on that track alone.  Months later NPR played "Baby Fish Mouth" as an outro to a news segment and I just new this band was something special.  "We Hold The Land in Great Esteem" is easily in my ten favorite songs of all times.  I used several samples from their album "Home is in Your Head," namely "Save the Birds" as parts of my high school music compositions for the talent show and performances.  "The Dirt Eaters" with its uncleared samples from Ironweed is just a slice of something wonderful.  Overall, it is the collage work best displayed on "King of Sweet" that has kept my attention and adoration for so many years.  I cannot stress enough how wonderful this group is, in every incarnation they have appeared under.

00:00 His Name Is Alive - Save the Birds
00:20 His Name Is Alive - If We
02:57 His Name Is Alive - Fossil
04:26 His Name Is Alive - Man on the Silver Mountain (Rainbow)

Episode 61 - Oddities

I love odd, unclassifiable music.  Experimental, avant garde, anything that stretches the imagination.  Sure, I scoured the infamous NWW list and found many a wonderful and challenging surprise.  The wonderful Finder's Keepers record label is currently doing a great overview of that based on country of origin.   This mix has something for everyone, and its all a bit odd.  There's a couple tracks I found on an old hard drive and I know they were not tagged correctly, so I have no idea what they actually are.

00:00 Piano Magic - I Came to Your Party
04:03 Mushrooms Patience - Blues Infected the World
07:44 Jac Berrocal - Automme Perdu

As a bonus, here is a fantastic one page comic for the lyrics of the Piano Magic song - I came to your party dressed as a shadow.  I wish I had saved the artist's name or the site I originally found this on, as I am quite impressed by this interpretation.

Episode 60 - Befuddled with looming darkness

Dark ambient, and uneasiness abounds in these tracks.  A few sprinklings of stability and light peek through before closing with some aggression.  Despite the majority of their work, the Ozrics can really knock down some dark atmospherics.  Mt Fuji/Kilimanjaro drive it home with the doom jazz, along with Lech Jankowski (who scored most Brother's Quay films).  Keeping it more light with Isan, Accelera Deck (don't remember the name of this track), and a rarity from Autechre.  Some Laptoptronica to keep it quirky, and ending with some grimy dirty drum and bass.  Overall a fun and diverse mix, even if focusing on darker sounds throughout.

00:00 Ozric Tentacles - Toltec Spring
02:33 The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - Strange Dreams
06:50 Calexico - Untitled III (Two Lone Swordsmen remix)

Episode 59 - His Name Is Alive - pt2 Middle Period

Continuing on this excellent group's overview, this time focusing on what I considered their mid-period (1996 - 2000). There is a bit of overlap timewise with the previous mix, but this focuses much more on the transition from their early to later styles.  They really came into their own, moving away from the hazy, shoegazing 4AD trove of artist during this phase and incorporated a lot of great covers.  The explosion of Time Stereo label as their CDr and Cassette imprint of unreleased or associated artist albums was always fun to explore.  The site, which is no longer full of pages, had so many things to investigate, from their write ups on the Noise Camp, to artwork from Davin and Warn (I've still got a few numbered prints I was lucky enough to get).  And yes, I'm still a proud owner of their handmade Cloud Box.

Episode 58 - Modernization and Decay

Jazz is adaptable, and works itself into the strangest of places.  This set shows some loose adaptations of the term jazz, and where it can lead you. Turntabilism is not a far stretch as hip hop has sampled jazz since its beginnings.  Indie folk, post-rock are easy incorporations of the style. Then there is doom jazz, which takes its ambiance from the creepiest of David Lynch movies and makes that its identity, and does it so very well. Of course ending it with The Caretaker, because watching The Shining with my family is an October tradition.

00:00 Jaga Jazzist - I Could Have Kill Him in the Sauna
05:23 Kid Koala - Basin Street Blues
09:25 Madlib - Slim's Return
13:08 Calexico - Attack el Robot! Attack (and How He Lost remix by Wechsel Garland)

Episode 57 - I Blame Wax Trax

Yeah, finding Wax Trax record label and vinyl store in Denver in the early 90's exposed my fledgling mind to so much music.  I couldn't get enough and purchased nearly everything based on short reviews in their catalogs.  I was revitalized finding all the Ministry side projects, as I'd lost interest in Ministry shortly after The Mind is a Terrible Thing to Taste. Then came the Black Box VHS tapes, which kept my interest moving along steadily with so many artists to investigate.  Discovering Perennial Divide in the early days of Brainwashed.com (back when it really was just a Meat Beat Manifesto fan site) was so exciting.  I recall walking into Independent Records and hearing "Christian Zombie Vampires" on the stereo, and my Mom saw how interested I was, so she snuck away and bought the store copy of MLTKK Confessions of a Knife for me as an early holiday present.  Around highschool, I fell deep into the Pigface supergroup fandom, and even saw them perform on Thanksgiving day, when Chris Connelly got upset at the crowd and walked off stage vowing to not play another show in Denver again.  I glossed over Download, however they will always hold the spot of my second favorite Skinny Puppy side-project, behind the Tear Garden (both of these will feature in depth mixes in the future - I made this mix in 2016, and did their retrospective overviews around 2020ish, and I'm still catching up on all this).

00:00 Lead Into Gold - Faster Than Light
05:27 Pailhead - Don't Stand in Line (remix)
10:25 Ministry - So What

Episode 56 - My Teenage Dream Was to Host 120 Minutes

This is the second half of the last mix, with more rock oriented songs, less folky.  Included are some of my top 50 greatest songs ever by Bright Eyes, Electrelane, Spiritualized, The Chills, and Cocteau Twins.  My interest in Smashing pumpkins fell off a cliff after Gish, but I had to include a ridiculously fun mash-up from them as well.  I recall the fun of finding both bands named Locust in internet searches, and yes I am a fan of both (the other will be featured in future grindcore oriented mixes).

Episode 55 - The Beer I Had For Breakfast

First half of this mix, as when I was compiling songs I ended up with too many and couldn't decide which Japancakes track to use.  Choosing both meant I had to divide everything based on overall feeling.  This mix is more indie folk oriented and features some excellent cover songs, some classics, and some general fun.

00:00 Calexico - Sonic Wind (Instrumental mix)
04:59 Japancakes - Heaven or Las Vegas (Cocteau Twins)

Episode 54 - Punkyness Brew(ster)ing

Transitioning from some straightforward alternative rock, to more punk tinged alternative.  Standard fare, then a rare one from The Stone Roses.  Godzuki kicking of the female led section of this mix, including some local Colorado artists. My wife got to meet and film Dressy Bessy for a project about 10 years back.  Also included is a nod to "But I'm a Cheerleader," which to my knowledge never had an official soundtrack released.  Probably the only Darling Buds track I like, then moving along to more punkier and grungier stuff, culminating in older post-punk near the end.  And a bonkers one to close it out.

00:00 Piano Magic - The Last Engineer

Episode 52 - Only True Grit Left in Cohen Brothers Flicks

This mix features a good selection of styles, most with a little more edge than my previous two mixes of this genre.  Iconaclass is the frontman from my favorite noisy hip hop group Dalek, Oktober was a pleasant surprise when I was actually searching for a Krautrock band of the same name.  I included some turntabilism, and the crafty live instrumentation of Live Human is on full display.  Some downtempo/illbient pieces fit well in the middle, then bridging on some industrial items.  That Nasenbluten track is just bonkers and uses rap (and The Shining) samples to great effect - though I edited a good 6 or 7 minutes of the track as the novelty wears off quickly.  EBN's one and only full album is chalk full of gems:  produced by Jack Dangers, featuring royalty on the MC duties, Bill Laswell has his hands in the pot, and they got their funding by doing visuals for U2's Zooropa tour.  And then, of course I had to wrap this all up with some absolute classics that everyone should have in their collection.

00:00 Iconaclass - Out of Patience
03:51 Oktober - Cell Block
06:56 Cypress Hill - Throw Your Set In The Air (Club Remix)

Episode 50 - Not Your Average Electro Pop Mix

Another eclectic mix of poppy tunes that don't fit a specific category.  I included my favorite adaptation of Four Tet's early work, a rare appearance of Luke Vibert in my collection, a solid New Order cover, a Dean Martin remix that I can't find any information on (this was from a mix tape a friend gave me over 20 years ago).  My love for plunderphonics is also on display here, with a superb nod to A Tribe Called Quest and later with the always entertaining People like us.  The DJ Wally contribution to a Jesus Franco tribute is both exactly what you'd expect from him, and also exactly what would fit into the movie it samples.  I also relish any opportunity to include Julee Cruise's work.   Lastly, I can assure this is the only time I'll include any reference to Death Cab For Cutie in my mixes as I am not a fan of their work, aside from this remix, which sounds nothing like them.

00:00 Siouxsie and The Banshees - Face to Face (7" mix)
04:08 Four Tet - Hilarious Movie of the 90s (Koushiks Funny Flick)
06:35 Laika - Breather (Remix by Luke Vibert)

55:35 Silver Apples - Lovefingers
59:33 The Faint - Worked Up So Sexual (Death Cab For Cutie remix)

Episode 49 - Progadelic

Prog and Psyche music aplenty.  Great dark, engaging music here.  So many styles that all blend well together.  Node is a superb, supergroup focusing on modular synth noodling.  Lotus Eaters is another supergroup of extreme and metalheads.  There is more than one freak-folk group called The Trees, this is the more obscure one.  I absolutely love Volcano the Bear, in all their difficult majesty.  Grails and Envy are pretty standard fare and expected in this mix.  James Plotkin makes a second appearance (solo work this time).  Yes, my adoration of Acid Mother's Temple is here, with (one of) their David Lynch homage.  Taking back to the old school with a couple classics, then hitting up the obscure again with The Sonic Catering Band via Colm Ó Cíosóig and Simon Johns.  Wrapping it all up with the ever dominant caring Nurse.

00:00 Node - Olivine
07:39 Lotus Eaters - Untitled 2
12:29 Trees - Track 02

Episode 48 - Living in a Punk House in the 90s

Episode 47 - Shoulda been a PK

Named after the universal comment from the sidelines from my daughter's soccer game last weekend.  Another solid mix of dub and reggae.  Starting off with Sonic Boom (no not THAT one), a fun Eurythmics cover, some classics, and I never miss a chance to incorporate my favorite artist, Twilight Circus Dub Sound System.  A nice addition from Sinead O'Connor (more from her dub album later), then some more classics.  I had to include something from Scientist vs World Cup to go with the name of this post.  Then a great mash-up thrown in for good measure.  Who knew the King could work over a reggae backing so well?  I ended it moving away from dub, and focused more on some favorite oldies.

00:00 Sonic Boom - The Dub & The Restless
04:29 Sly and Robbie Featuring Bill Laswell - Here Comes the Rain Again (Eurythmics)
08:25 Unknown - No No No (unknown dub remix)
13:11 Scientist - Your Teeth in My Neck
17:45 Twilight Circus - Filter 13 (Wailers Tribute mix)
21:36 Jah Wobble - New Mexico Dub

30:54 Prince Far I - Heavyweight Version
34:18 Scientist - Extra Time Part 1

Episode 45 - The Definitive Third

Mix title pulled from Fellini's biography.  Bookended by the Dust Brothers (when they were still called that), and then filled with some fun, groovy, wonky electronic tracks.  That is one of my favorite Bjork remixes, its straightforward and not nearly as weird as most of her music gets.  This is the first Electrelane song I ever heard and fell in love with their style.  A recent announcement of a new This Immortal Coil album has be all abuzz again.  I think listeners will soon figure out that I try to work nearly every track from the Brain in the Wire compilation series into my mixes.  That and my fixation on the early era of Autechre tracks.  Hope everyone enjoys this one.

00:00 The Dust Brothers - If You Kling to Me I'll Klong to You
05:18 Pulseprogramming - Oh Halo (1984 Penny for your loafer mix)
08:34 Boards of Canada - Smokes Quantity
11:40 Bjork - Isobel (Motorbass remix)
17:22 Electrelane - I want to be the President
22:05 This Immortal Coil - Chaostrophy (Deadverse Remix)
28:18 Cex - Ad Nauseum
32:46 Jah Wobble - Car Ad Music 6
37:14 Core - Haunted Dub

63:52 The Dust Brothers - One Too Many Morning

Episode 44 - Being Forthcoming

The act of being forthcoming.  A mix of songs I planned to make into other mixes more specific to their genre, but ended up pulling together like this.  These are mostly reflective of times in the last several years (I made this in 2016) and was looking ahead in my life as to what would come next.  I remember first hearing Mojave Three on the Shaving the Pavement tour with Scheer and Lush, having no clue it was the guy from Slowdive.  Noir Desir is a great French band I wouldn't have come across without the CDr swapping with a former Coil email list member that I befriended - this is nowhere close to what I imagined a Coil fan would be into, but it hit home with me and my minor understanding of the French language.  I came across the Abner Jay track via a spotify playlist from Marissa Nadler.  That Icelandic operatic cover of Bjork is breathtaking - trust me its worth seeking out the rest of the album this is from.  I'm elated to hear Sunny Day Real Estate is reunited for tours this year, I may just have to drag my old shoegaze/emo self out for that one.  Of course, ending this with some more oddities, such as Fall of Saigon which is a fantastic one off project from Pascal Comelade, and of course a Nancy Sinatra cover by Coil.  That is always a classic.

00:00 Billy Bragg - A New England
02:07 Calexico - Crystal Frontier (Widescreen Version)
05:59 Mojave Three - Breaking the Ice
09:55 Noir Desir - Le Vent Nous Portera

Episode 41 - The Sea and Cake

Hopefully everyone already knows about The Sea and Cake.  They always give me a half smile and a boppy groove.  I've presented my favorite songs from them here.  I came across them via Tortoise, and then heard their music in multiple skateboarding videos way back in the 90's.  I made this mix in early 2015, before they released their latest album.  Not represented is their cover of Bowie's "Sound and Vision" which I will certainly include in my all covers mix.

Episode 40 - Apocalyptic Folk

For the genre, this mix is pretty standard fare and not too many surprises.  I dove head first into this genre over 25 years ago, thanks to World Serpent distribution.  The interconnectedness of most of the groups in this list made for a lot of research and listening opportunities.

Episode 38 - I wanna Rock!

An overview from 2016 of the many styles of metal that I like.  Metal is such a diverse landscape anymore, with seemingly endless sub-genres.  Though I haven't made as many mixes of these styles, I mostly listen to a lot of old school death metal and post-metal, with some good stoner doom in there too.

Episode 37 - His Name Is Alive - pt3 Later Days

While His Name Is Alive remains active to this day, this mix represents the later days  (1996 - 2005) that I rabidly followed their every move.  They are a band that certainly reinvents their sound on every release, while still staying absolutely recognizable in every iteration.   This covers the end of the 4AD era, some excellent dub tracks that are just amazing, and a few top tier remixes by legends in their respective genres.   Plus one track that as far as I can tell is unreleased to this day, and I honestly cannot remember where I came across it - it is the strangest and one of my favorites of theirs.   I did skip over the Lovetta years as they are so distinct I reserved that era for an entirely separate mix coming later.
