437 The Remix According To Twisted Science

Twisted Science aka Jon Tye didn't have a large output.  What was released is some very sublime and smooth glitch-based electronica.  I first heard the name on the "Kid606 and Friends" CD, then their remix for Bowery Electric, and finally the excellent "Roots" remix album from Thurston Moore.  Recently I had picked up the Hood remixes 12" for the Third Eye Foundation, and was pleasantly surprised with the Twisted Science remix on there.  The other two tracks on this mix are from MLO and Twisted Science certainly puts their spin on it and makes it anything but "mellow".

00:00  Thurston Moore - Kleen (remix by Twisted Science vs Burzootie)
02:37  MLO - New Generation (Twisted Science mix)
08:19  Kid606 - Splinters (Kid606 vs Twisted Science mix)
09:59  Bowery Electric - Empty Words (Twisted Science mix)

436 The Remix According To We

There was that brief period of time in the late 1990's where Illbient flourished as its own beast.  Not trip-hop, not ambient, and not your average electronica act.  I believe DJ Spooky and DJ Olive were the ones that coined the term Illbient.  Only a handful of artists were part of this scene, yet the impact on me was immense.  We were one of the most prominent acts in the genre, and made up of DJ Olive, Once11 and Lloop.  I've thoroughly enjoyed their releases for many years and was thrilled to include them in this month-long series.

Sure, they only remixed a couple artists, and its these Tipsy remixes that I was aching to build upon.  I do apologize in advance, my copy of that 12" is a bit dirty, don't worry the music still shines through.

00:00  Medeski Martin & Wood - Bubblehouse (BBQ remix)
06:27  Tipsy - Grossenhosen (Happi Voodoo Remix)
13:50  The Dylan Group - Bittersweet (Hor & Sour mix)

31:08  Medeski Martin & Wood - Spy Kiss (Whr R Your Childrn Mix)
38:03  Tipsy - Mr Excitement (Stoned In NYC remix)
45:58  Free Kitten - Never Gonna Sleep (mixed by We)

432 The Remix According to Spiritualized

Jason Pierce's project following Spacemen 3.    They started with a hypnotizing blend of drones and psychedelic rock, then moving more towards psychedelic stadium rock (they were a 9 piece band at one point), and now with some solid psychedelic indie rock sounds.  All shrouded under the hazy drug fueled wild mind of Jason.    I recall seeing them live around 2004 I think, and Jason was not in good shape; two roadies carried him on stage where they had a chair set up.  he played the whole show slumped in that chair looking half alive.  Despite that, the music was incredible and he was belting it out and put on a great show.

They've only released four remixes of other artists, so I took those and supplemented then with three remixes of Spiritualized to fill this out.  Some long tracks here, sit back and enjoy the ride.

00:00  Global Communication - Maiden Voyage (Spiritualized Electric Mainline Mix)
06:25  Spiritualized - I Think I'm In Love (Chemical Brothers Vocal remix)
13:55  Cut Copy - Free Your Mind (Spiritualized Version)
19:13  Spiritualized - Come Together (Two Lone Swordsmen Mix)
34:15  Goldfrapp - Monster Love (Goldfrapp vs Spiritualized)
39:38  Spiritualized - Come Together (Richard Fearless Mix)
46:39  LFO - Tied Up (Spiritualized Electric Mainline Remix)

431 The Remix According To Colin Potter

Colin Potter might not be a name familiar to everyone, though he should be.  He had quite a good run of industrial, electo-ambient releases back in the 1980's when he started his own lable ICR, Integrated Circuit Records.  He's released his own albums and many by Alio Die, Andrew Chalk, The Hafler Trio, Darren Tate, Bass Communion, Jonathan Coleclough, Monos, Nurse With Wound, Ora, Paul Bradley, Phil Mouldycliff, Trevor Whishart, and many others.  That should clue you into what kind of sound to expect.  He's been the producer and only other permanent member of Nurse With Wound since the 1990s.  Colin is also an active member of both drone/ambient groups Ora and Monos.  I find his work mesmerizing on its own, and his remix work is impressive as displayed through these two mixes.

Expect drones and ambience aplenty here, with a few surprises especially on the second mix.

00:00  Andrew Liles - All Doors Open (Colin Potter Remix)
05:51  Sol Invictus - The Wild Hunt / Something Wicket This Way Comes
10:05  Pantaleimon - The Sun Came Out (Dawn Porous) (Colin Potter Remix)

429 The Remix According To The Prunes

Danish production team that produces ridiculously cool remixes.  Almost half this mix are Beastie Boys remixes, which is where I came across them first.  It was really the opening DJ Vadim remix that made me so excited to put this playlist together.  The DJ Krush remix is quite good, but my vote still goes to DJ Shadow for best track on that EP.  The rest of the tracks were new to me when compiling this and I find them quite engaging, despite not knowing the language.  The sadly small output of The Prunes only leaves me wanting more, much much more.

00:00  DJ Vadim - Theme From The Conquest of The Irrational (Remix by The Prunes)
04:36  Beastie Boys - Root Down (Free Zone Mix)
08:16  Den Gale Pose - Den Danske Skole (Sveskalistiskfalddodomactionmanremix)

418 The Remix According To Dälek

Dälek (pronounced dialec), is a wonderful noise based hip hop group.  Like My Bloody Valentine crossed with Public Enemy.  Very esoteric and enigmatic topics in the lyrics.  The group was originally Will Brooks (MC Dalek), Alap Momin (The Oktopus) and Hsi-Chang Lin (Still).  Around 2011 they went on hiatus, and then Will Brooks revitlized the project in 2015 with new members Mike Manteca (from Destructo Swarmbots) and DJ Rek.  They're still predominantly featured on Ipecac Recordings (Mike Patton's label if you weren't aware), and frequently self-release their "Meditations" series on Bandcamp.   You'll also see names like iconAclass which is Will Brooks solo work, and Deadverse which was the production name and remix alias on many of their works.  For these mixes I included all member's work under these names, and a few of their solo ventures.  Its all a wonderful blend of harsh noise over smooth beats and that whole shoegaze aesthetic taken onto additional genres.

417 The Remix According To A Guy Called Gerald

A Guy Called Gerald, aka Gerald Simpson, is a name that was vaguely familiar to me when I started this project.  His remix work for The Stone Roses, Can and DJ Spooky were the only tracks I knew him from.  As I thought about it more, I acknowledged that these three mixes were very good, and I should probably put more effort into his wider discography.  I've still not dove into his albums or original work, and am open to suggestions from other fans.  For his remix work, I did have several other of these tracks in my collection.  Diverse and solid work across the board here.  Ambient to drum and bass to dub to straight-forward electronica.  Loved this image, as it reminds me of vintage photos of Lee Perry, King Tubby and Scientist.

00:00  DJ Spooky vs The Freight Elevator Quartet - File Under Futurism (Ambient Mix)

416 The Remix According To Pan Sonic

Pan Sonic, formerly Panasonic, are purveyors of glitchy, noisy, droning electronica in its finest forms.  Can be difficult listening at times, therein lies the reward.  I was amazed when I picked up A/B back in the early 2000's at Amoeba records.  Then Vakio came via mail order.  It was Kesto that really solidified my long running appreciation of their work.  A shorter mix this time, but no less powerful.  I think the only thing I am missing are their remixes of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Jean-Louis Murat.

00:00  Recoil - Shunt (Pan Sonic Mix)
05:06  Muslimgauze - Druse (Panasonic mix)
11:44  Einsturzende Neubauten - NNNAAAMMM (Panasonic Remix)

415 The Remix According To Muslimgauze

This one took me a lot of time to work through.  Finding the sources for all these Muslimgauze tracks was no easy hill to climb, but the view from the top is amazing.  I divided this into four parts, or two pairs of mixes.  The first one is the original tracks, and the second mix is what Muslimgauze turned them into.  The third mix is the Suns of Arqa and Rootsman tracks which Bryn Jones did full album remixes of, so those are paired up on the fourth mix with what he did with that source material.

The tracks pretty much line up, but there are some 1:2 or 2:1 relationships here.  Such as Talvin Singh's "Soft Works" became "Hard Rest" and "More Hard Rest" from Muslimgauze.  And Scientist and Dave/Ansel Collins became "Holy Man."  Systemwide's "Nommos" became both "Nommos' Ark" and "Nommos' Ghosts," because I wanted to showcase the diversity applied in Bryn's remixes.

I know there are dozens if not hundreds more that could be added here (I had another 40 or so tracks tagged for this project).  I'd love to know if anyone else has matched up source material with remix from Muslimgauze.

420 THAT mix

A brief detour on this month's themes because tis time to celebrate that unofficial holiday.  I already did an all reggae/dub mix on the subject, only natural that I expanded to other genres of music that celebrate the stinky.  This one is all over the map, as is proper for the ADHD euphoria associated with it.  Something for everyone here.

410 Remix Swapping With Jack Dangers

Mr. Jack Dangers, the man from Meat Beat Manifesto and Tino Corp.  I've covered his remixes in the past, so I took a slightly different approach here.  Reviewing his discography, it became very clear that he had a "lets trade remixes" agreement with many other artists.  He'd remix a track for them and within a few months they'd remix a track for him.  A few of these are from the "Storm the Studio RMXS" album, which maybe caught up some loose ends in this scenario.  Nonetheless, all stellar work and quite diverse.

Excited as well that while I was compiling this, they announced the new collaboration between MBM and Merzbow.  First track available for preview here:

00:00  The Mellowtrons - Not Playing God (Funny Noises Mix by MBM)
06:34  MBM - God OD (Bud OD so U cant C mix by the Mellowtrons)

409 The Remix According To Fun-Da-Mental

I love the first track on this mix, and for the longest time that was the only thing I had from Fun-Da-Mental.  Then I realized I had them on the "This is Fascism" album, and knew I needed to hear more from them.  Quite a global approach to hip hop.  Sometimes sounding like the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and some times more like Talvin Singh.  Always intriguing and hard to pinpoint.

00:00  Pop Will Eat Itself - Auslander (Fun-Da-Mental 12inch)
05:20  Fun-Da-Mental - Countryman (Peeyar Mix)

408 The Remix According To Guru

I selected Guru, or Gifted Unlimited Rhymes Universal, based on the first four remixes here.  Come on, Guru remixing Skinny Puppy is some serious happenstance that yielded magic.  The Sade remix is absolutely sublime.  The rest of this I tried to stick with remixes featuring just Guru.  The Gang Starr label did include him in the credits.  Really, the only thing I omitted were any tagged as only DJ Premier.

00:00  Medeski Martin and Wood - What Happened To Gus (Guru Mix)
04:32  Skinny Puppy - Censor (The Gutter Mix)
08:34  Deee-Lite - Picnic In The Summertime (Guru Jeeper Self Mix)

407 The Remix According To Rabbit In The Moon

Sure, they've released two or three remix compilations.  I've found those tracks are edited, and don't cover many of my favorites from them.  So, consider this supplemental and "for the fans" as many of these are previously covered by the official releases in slightly different forms.  I also included their remixes under RITM, or Lunasol names which are essentially the same thing.

00:00  Sarah McLachlan - Fear (Lunasol mix)
05:59  God Within - The Phoenix (Riverandrain)
15:23  The Stone Roses - I Wanna Be Adored (RITM's Acid Hacienda V 2.1)

40:26  Banco De Gaia - Drunk as a Monk (RITM's Brass Monkey remix)
49:19  Garbage - Milk (RITM's Got It Mix)

09:22  Sarah McLachlan - Possessed by Fear
16:31  Humate - East (Opium Den mix)
26:07  Keoki - Caterpillar (RITM Disco 2001 mix)
34:16  Garbage - Queer (Heftybag Mix)

406 The Remix According To 808 State

Future Vintage already put out a comp for 808 State, however theirs included many remixes attributed to Graham Massey as an individual.  My mix here sticks to only those remixes tagged as 808 State.  A nuance, but an important one in my book.  I only had the Yellow Magic Orchestra and UB40 remixes in mind when I started this mix.  It was a surprise that they remixed Siouxsie, as I never paid close attention to the credits.  The rest were either tucked far away in my library, or were new finds.  Like the track from Yes, that was such a pleasant find.  The Soft Ballet remix album keeps popping up in this series from me, I'd never listened to it as a whole, only picking bits and pieces that piqued my interest.

00:00  Texas - Halo (808 dub)
05:50  Yellow Magic Orchestra - Light In Darkness (The 808 State Remix)

405 The Remix According To Lustmord

The master of dark ambience.  I know I don't have a stereo set up or headphones in high enough quality to fully immerse in and appreciate his music.  His remixes apply his darkness to more beat oriented works and the results are stunning.  Probably the only person that can actually pull off remixing Tool.

404 The Remix According To Scorn

Mick Harris has the Midas touch.  Coming from Napalm Death, Scorn was his death ambient project which then pre-empted dubstep, then abandoned that for their own slow bass heavy dark bliss.  He also has his drone project Lull, the drum and bass of Quoit, the Scorn similar project The Weakener, and several releases under his own name.  His project with Bill Laswell and Eraldo Bernocchi is Equations of Eternity and is as great as you can imagine based on that lineup.  Trace Decay is his work with John Everall.  There is also this little band he is in called Painkiller featuring Bill Laswell and John Zorn, which you may have heard of.

Here, his unique touch and trademark Scorn sound is easily identified on every track he works on.  I stayed with remixes under the Scorn name, so nothing listed as a Mick Harris remix or any of his other aliases.  I probably should do a follow up of his other remixes, as there are plenty of gems in there.

403 The Remix According To Scanner

Robin Rimbaud, fan of ring modulators and intercepting cell phone signals.  But oh so much more.  It was his remixes for Scorn and Meat Beat Manifesto that really drew me in and his collaboration album with DJ Spooky.  Plus his association with Coil, they even named a track "For Robin."  He has done so many albums that are bizarre and captivating.  He's even done sound production for some stage plays.  His remix work is on display here, and it is pretty amazing.

402 The Remix According To Third Eye Foundation

Continuing from mix230b, I felt there is enough for a new mix without pulling every song from "I poopoo on your juju."  Ok yeah, I did pull 4 tracks from there, but the rest are all found independently.  A distinct and recognizable take on drum and bass that can only be Matt Elliott.  You know what you're getting into when he slaps that 3EF tag on a track.

00:00  The Remote Viewer - All of the WCKWC Want To Be Abstract (3EF remix)
05:40  Micro:mega - Heart (The 3EF mix)
10:56  The Pastels - On The Way (3EF)

401 The Remix According To Underworld

Under any of their monikers (Steppin Razor, Lemon Interrupt, Underworld), they are easily recognizable and always on top of their game.  I did stay away from the Darren Price/Darren Emerson solo remixes as those should be viewed as separate from the overall group.  Mix 1 starts off with some of their older works, though not presented here in any sort of chronological order.  William Orbit's great track given the underwater treatment, sort of a dubby ambience I suppose.  Spooky's Schmoo Dub on the Dub House Disco 2000 compilation, remixed by Steppin Razor, making this a bit more engaging than the original.  Leftfield's wonderful Song Of Life brought to new territory under the Lemon Interrupt name.  Then we come to my favorite EP from Orbital, Diversions.  The Chemical Brother's track was from the first EP I bought of theirs and love the remixes from Underworld and Sabres of Paradise on that one.  Model 500 is new to me, so no real feedback yet.  Then ending the first mix with the excellent dub mix of Front 242.

The second mix starts with Bjork from her Debut solo album, and a solid reworking by Underworld.  Sven Vath's source material works really well in the Underworld remix machine.  Shakespear's Sister was a new one I found while compiling this list and I was pleasantly surprised.  Massive Attack are welcomed on any comp, I forgot about this remix.  Dreadzone is another one that I found specifically for this mix.  Then David Lynch, probably the newest on this set and shows that Underworld haven't lost anything in the last few decades.  Ending it with a classic from Drum Club, probably back to some of their earliest works.

00:00  William Orbit - Water From A Vine Leaf (Underwater Mix part 2)
11:36  Spooky - Schmoo Dub
17:22  Leftfield - Song of Life (The Lemon Interupt Mix)
27:21  Orbital - Lush 3-3 (Underworld)
40:14  The Chemcial Brothers - Leave Home (Underworld Mix Two)
46:48  Model 500 feat Aisha Jamiel - The Flow (Underworld Mk 2 Mix)
54:11  Front 242 - Happiness (Dub Mix by Underworld)

00:00  Bjork - Human Behaviour (The Underworld Remix 110bpm)
12:00  Sven Vath - Harlequin-The Beauty and The Beast (Underworld Alternative mix)
24:04  Shakespear's Sister - Black Sky (Dub Extravaganza Part 2)
34:28  Massive Attack - Risingson (Underworld Mix)
42:59  Dreadzone - Zion Youth (Underworld Mix)
52:49  David Lynch - Good Day Today (Underworld Classic Remix)
