Episode 160 - Lovetta's era

My fourth overview mix of His Name Is Alive covers a transitional period.  Karin left the band, the guest singer Lovetta was put in the front slot and the band shed their former 4AD, hauntology, nostalgia pop sounds for more electronic and straight up R&B.  This was short lived and only covered two official albums and a handful of EPs, plus many items on their CDr imprint Time Stereo.  I was not a fan, but that has changed over time.  I'm glad I saved all those discs, and revisited now that I am older and wiser.  This is good music overall, and feels more like a side project than an evolution of the band I loved to much in the 90's.  Here I've selected two mixes of the best cuts and remixes from this stage... which also includes their outstanding roots-style dub cuts which honestly is the reason I came back to this period in their history.  This is actually two longer mixes that I consolidated to one for inclusion here, hence some repeated titles though they are radically unique versions.

Episode 158 - Oz and Heavy Metals

I grew up at a time when I was just old enough to watch Headbangers Ball on MTV, but too young to buy most of the albums due to the Tipper Gore Explicit Lyrics battle.   So videos was how I was exposed to so much great music.  This mix focuses on the Oz and Dio, and some other straightforward metal artists.  I ended up diving much more into death metal and post metal, but will always have my roots in thrash and straight up heavy metal.

Episode 156 - Coil Early Era

Part 3 of 3, focused on roughly their first 10 years.  This is the reason I fell in love with Coil's music.  Picking up "Gold is the Metal" was my first foray into this wild environment.  I'd not come across anything quite like it before.  It blew my mind.  Then I saw the video for "Windowpane" on MTV which was just bonkers.  I quickly picked up the Wax Trax Black Box VHS set so I could enjoy it on repeat.  Then I came across one of my desert islands discs, "Love's Secret Domain."   Life changing is the best description of that album.  And my internet sleuthing days helped me turn up Love's Secret Demise bootleg which is quite entertaining.   I recall fondly my friend Paul picking up "Stolen and Contaminated Songs" which was on repeat listening for at least a full year during our hangouts.

Episode 155 - Coil & Associates

This mix is focusing on the later period of Coil's music, less industrial and more glitchy and ambient.  They were always forward thinkers and ahead of their peers.  I've included a lot of contemporaries and groups related to them in one way or another.  The Coil remixes of Scorn are some of the best works from either camp.  I remember my shock when I picked up the California Rhinoplasty EP from Matmos and found the Coil cover on it.  It has always piqued my interest on how the MBM track "hello teenage America" is so similar to Coil's "teenage lightening"; they both came out around the same time (89/90) and in my opinion the coincidences are too many to ignore.  When Coil started performing live, I heard that Vicki Bennett from PLU was working their merch counter.  The collaboration with COH man Ivan Pavlov resulted in some superb works under the SoiSong name.  The Threshold House was a nice post-Coil project from Sleazy too.  And then there is the deluge of unreleased tracks in the last few years, which while I enjoy hearing anything and everything they've created,  only some of it is really up to the standards of their 'released' material.

00:00  Coil - The Snow (Answers Come In Dreams II)

Episode 154 - Coil Restrained

Part 1 of 3 overview of some of the finest points from one of my all time favorite groups.  There are a lot of repeated songs and themes in this mix, but every time the boys approached a song it was something completely new and inspiring.   This mix focuses on what I would call their more accessible, restrained, and sometimes beautiful pieces of music.  Even so, everything is unmistakably the works of Sleazy and Jhon.  Having such a large and varied in style discography, hopefully these mixes will help give an entry point for the uninitiated, or fond recollections for the enlightened.

Episode 148 - The Twilight Sad's Early Years

I fell in love with their sound immediately upon hearing their debut EP.  It was cacophonous, amorous, and sheer bliss.  They had pop sensibilities intertwined with Sonic Youth-esque wall of noise, and a signer not afraid to hide his thick accent.  I haven't been as enamored with their more recent albums, though they are getting the attention they have rightly earned.  These early tracks with their long titles akin to post rock of the early 2000's make for a solid mix tape showing the roots of this excellent rock band.

Episode 147 - Exotic Surf

Not much of a surf rock fan myself, I did find a niche of this genre that appealed to me.  Started it off with The Cramps, because everyone needs them in their lives, then moving to the Colorado Avalanche Theme song, and onto the slew of unique covers of songs that work unexpectedly well in the surf genre.  Always throwing in a few classics to keep you off the scent, but you'll get the idea.  Had to include The Ventures twice because they were my Dad's favorite.  For not liking surf, this mix worked out pretty well in my opinion.  Sure, maybe I threw one or two many into the blender, but oh well - Novelty always has a point of diminishing returns.

Episode 146 - Can Faust Couple Others?

While exploring Krautrock as a genre, I dove in deep with the big names of Can and Faust.  They always seemed to stand out much more than their peers, plus I didn't really care as much for the new age-y synth explorations, the moog noodling was fun but not really on repeat listening for me, and the long drawn out jams only get plays once or twice.  The shorter, song oriented experiments and catchy tunes here are more what I gravitate towards.

Episode 144 - Early 90s techno

I got into techno and raves quite heavily in the mid 90s.  I was never much of a dancer,  but I loved the music and culture and an excuse to stay out all night with my friends.  Here's a selection of some early gems in this world that have stuck with me some near 30 years later.

Episode 143 - Tipsy and Such

The group Tipsy is something quite unique and special.  Taking a turntablist approach to exotica, and blending with live instruments creating something wild and unique and perfect for cocktails parties on the moon.  This mix was built around several Tipsy songs, and then I filled in the gaps with similar music that keeps it varied and moving along at a great pace.  While I love Tipsy, the novelty wears off after a half dozen tracks.  Though they are perfect for almost any playlist.  Despite the focus and name of this mix, Spotify has nearly no tracks available from Tipsy, how frustrating.

Episode 142 - Brainwashed This Way

The Brainwashed.com website is quite likely the first website I ever visited on the internet in the late 90's.  It was originally an information repository for Meat Beat Manifesto, including the bones of a sample list, discography, and related projects.  The site quickly grew to host many other artists, and had a weekly zine called The Brain, which covered obscure record reviews. This was very influential on my budding music exploration and exposed me to countless artists I may not have found otherwise.   Then there was the superb "Brain in the Wire" 3 CD sets given away through the Wire monthly subscription.  The Otology series (and CD) and the Brainwaves concert / CDs.  One of my favorites was "The Eye" a frequent video interview and concert footage program of the hosted artists.  I believe most of those episodes are on YouTube now, however I still have all the DVDrs on my shelf.  Can't forget to mention the V/VM 365 project or how they used to have all their albums for download on the site.  So much excellent music, and was on top of the game for nearly 20 years.  The site is still around, still posting record reviews, but all the artist pages are sadly neglected.

This is part 1 or 2 showcasing the artists I fell in love with via Brainwashed.  Its a long mix because there are so many freakin amazing artists on the site to cover.  For whatever reason at the time, I didn't finish part 2 until months later (Its Mix #199, so be patient and it will arrive in due course).

Episode 141 - Krautrockin NWW Pieces

These are the most krautrock-ish tracks that Mr. Stapleton has done.  One look at the infamous NWW List shows his love of the obscure and abstract so this should come as no surprise.  Some of these tracks are collaborations, some are his heavy handed production, and others are his main group's efforts.   All are lengthy and well worth the price of admission.
