Episode 25 - Post-Everything

Bookended by the plunderphonic tape-splicing excellence of Christoph Heemann, this mix has a great slice of everything post-rock, post-whatever, and generally great songs.  A few tracks culled from the Up Records and Slabco compilation I received from an old roommate, several excellent covers, a few solid remixes, and voila another superb mix to enhance your day.

Episode 24 - Legendary Pink Dots (pt2)

LPD, the early days

Here is the second part of my overview, focused on the early era.  Their DIY ethos paired with natural talent and affinity for experimenting was the perfect mix, right out of the gate.  I still remember picking up the Legendary Pink Box when I was 13, based solely on its name.  Something called that just had to be magnificent, right?  I was not disappointed.  The version of "Close Your Eyes, You can be a Space Captain" is still my favorite from them.  I do love their albums, however it was their Chemical Playschool sessions that hooked me forever.

Episode 22 - Legendary Pink Dots (pt1)

Part 1 of many – My favorite band, and the one I’ve seen live the most times.  This is a collection of songs I keep coming back to, reminding myself of just how wonderful they are.  I've focused on my favorite era of theirs, what I call the Ryan Moore years.  With a history over 40 years with astonishing productivity the whole time, it helps to break it down by era.  This period was their largest lineup including Niels van Hoorn and Martijn De Kleer, occasionally Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy) on drums.  A little after this time period, I participated in the Cloud Zero mail list fan tribute album, and then produced the second edition of that.

Episode 21 - Variety is the spice of life

A mix with lots of variety, from trip hop to breaks to hip hop to straight up trance.  That MBM track is still one of my favorite breaks tracks, followed appropriately by Lesson 6. Early Autechre is a whole different beast than what they became. I've always loved the dubby side of Moby's early work.  There are so many hidden gems in the FSOL archives series.  This is one of the few Aphex Twin tracks I still enjoy, love the story about how the tape was eaten but u-Ziq liked how it sounded and left it in the mix.

00:00  Ruby – Paraffin (Red Snapper Mix)
04:18  The Sabres of Paradise – Wilmot (Red Snapper Remix)

Episode 16 - Dub Originators (pt 1)

As I mentioned, I love dub.  The creativity involved is amazing, and it puts complete control in the mixer/engineer/producer.  Taking someone else’s completed work and using the mixing console as an instrument to create something completely new.  Because of the lax copyright laws at the time, and the tendency for producers to put their name on the Dub versions, I did my best to portray an accurate track list below.

00:00  Dennis Brown & The Observers All Stars – Mr. D. Brown Dub
02:43  Joe Gibbs – Chapter Three
06:16  The Skatalites meet King Tubby – African Roots Dub

Episode 14 - The Dubbier Side of Muslimgauze

Another episode focused on a single artist…and the discography for this artist is just astounding.  I won’t go into the politics behind this artist as those can be polarizing, instead focusing on a specific genre he toyed with to great success.  While the majority of the music Bryn Jones made was industrial and aggressive, he also had a keen interest in dub styled studio production techniques.  I pulled this mix together of some of the best examples I could find off the top of my head (with close to 200 CDs/LPs worth of material to go through, I know I couldn’t cover all grounds)

00:00 Abuses (Occupied Frequencies)

Episode 12 - Is Alternative Still a Thing?

I've always loved so-called alternative music.  Anymore its not really an alternative to anything mainstream.  Again, some very good cover songs thrown in here and lots of hidden gems and a few classics.  I wanted to include the Black Heart Procession's cover of Tom Petty's song, but couldn't find a quality recording.  The Trespassers William do, what I consider to be an improved version of a Ride song, and Moby/Heather Nova take a Clash classic in a beautiful new direction.  Threw in some Beequeen since they a sorely overlooked group, and followed with some fantastic finds in 23 Skidoo's early era, and Fall of Saigon which is a Pascal Comelade project.  The HNIA track here is a favorite which was highlighted on the "Shaving the Pavement" 4AD tour sampler cassette.  Ending with a favorite from Yo La Tengo that was in frequent rotation in my house in Manitou.

00:00  Frightened Rabbit – Late March, Death March (alternate version)
03:48  The Black Heart Procession – It’s a crime I never told you about the diamonds in your eyes

Episode 10 - Mellow Electronics and a Dash of Summertime Fun (2015)

More mellow electronic music for summertime relaxing.  I really like the vibe of this set.  Picked some favorites with vocals.  Love the DJ Krush remix from the Off Beat 12", the Dub Trio cover of Seefeel is excellent and came out of nowhere, gamelan samples again used superbly, and a Can remix which a friend used as part of a skateboard video, and the most excellent Download covering Neu!  Ending it with a swirl of equally fantastic songs from various entry points.

Episode 8 - Ready for Summer (2015)

A week on the beach has made me ready for summer.  This mix is some tunes that are perfect for hanging on my deck and enjoying some beautiful weather.  The first track is a gem from my high school years, the Four Tet remix of HNIA is a real sweet treat, the Venetian Snares tracks are restrained but just lovely (including the Edward Scissorhands sample), the Susumu Yokota is an earworm, and the world-dub of Jah Wobble is a nice way to round it out.

Episode 6 - Good Quirky Fun

A good mix of fun tracks.  I really loved making this mix (summer 2015) with some oddball tracks that fit together so well.  This is a very good representation of my musical taste in my college years.  Another track from the excellent Macro Dub Infection comp, the Mo Wax Excursions series, a Matmos track and the Novy Svet track that sampled it (quite the unexpected combination), a track from This is Home Entertainment, another leftover from Fridge.  I take every opportunity to include Broadcast in a mix, and ending with some laptoptronica and plunderphonics.

Episode 5 - Fridge

There are some bands that have so many great songs that I couldn’t choose just one or two for inclusion in another mix, they warrant a full podcast just to themselves.  Such is Fridge.   I first came across their unique sound though the weekly music review posts on Brainwashed.com. I wish I could find that old review, as the way it was described made me blindly purchase several CDs from them on the spot.  One member of Fridge, went on to greater success as Four Tet.

Episode 4 - Film Scores, Classical and World Music

This mix is a little bit all over the place, but essential listening.  I have a fondness for film and TV scores; the music really does make the scene.  The second half of this mix moves to more folk, roots, gospel and classical music to keep things interesting.  The NON/C93 tracks are both based on the same melody and Rose McDowall sings both; hard to believe this was a coincidence.

Episode 3 - Crazy Good Stuff

Another set of my all-time favorites.  This more focused on the more strange and rare items that I adore.   Every one of these songs was a pivotal moment in my music exploration journey over the last few decades.  The HNIA track has a wonderful video from the Brothers Quay, which is how I was introduced to the art of both of them, the Pigface track reminds me of a Thanksgiving I spent at one of their concerts as a teen.  There is my absolute favorite Stereolab track with NWW's genius, and my first exposure to Derniere Volonte and Novy Svet on a superbe collaboration.  The NWA remix is a nice surprise from an album where Kid606's remix gets all the attention.  The Labradford remix is bonkers and just lovely.  Lots of treats in store for the patient listener.
