375 Shoegaze-ish mix 1

The next four mixes I made for myself guessing around 2010, and likely gave my wife a copy.  Mostly shoegazer stuff here, with some post-punk thrown in for good measure.  Had this playing in our car last week and my wife said she loved it all over again and remembered it from 10-15 years back.  I remember going on a shoegaze spree when I was compiling this.  Trying to find new (at the time) and underground tracks that I wasn't familiar with.

374 An Old Dub Mix featuring me

Fairly certain I made this mix in 2008 because of the inclusion of DubXanne.

Some shameless self-promotion here, probably the first time I've shared my own music on this blog.  I was remix swapping with API  (a good friend I made on the Cloud Zero email list, for fans of the Legendary Pink Dots) at the time I made this mix CDr, and my dub mix caught the attention of Frankie Bones on myspace (that should help solidify the date).  There are two or three versions of this track that were floating about the internet; my original demo which I sent to API - and he shared with others not realizing I wasn't done.  He responded back to me by adding about another minute of his touches/additional remix to the track.  I felt that he had taken it away from the dub I had intended, and made it into more of a dub-house track.  I then stripped some of his additions, remixed a couple of his added samples and extended my demo into the track heard here.

The rest of this playlist comes from tracks I was really excited to find in my constant search for great dub music.  Pretty sure I only had the free sample of the Itch-E and Scratch-E track, which is one of Andy Rantzen's aliases.  I struck up a friendship with him based on my unyielding adoration of the Pelican Daughters.  That isn't THE Sonic Boom on this mix, I was confused by that for many years and recently found out it is actually a pseudonym of Victor Axlerod.  He should be known to anyone into Daptone records, and was a longtime member of Antibalas and The Dap-Kings.  The His Name is Alive tracks are quite fantastic, "Cinnamon Sound System" is from the Friendly Science 7" they put out, and is one of my most cherished pieces of vinyl.  As I mentioned on a previous mix, I am likely to include Twilight Circus on every future dub mix, applies to ones I created 15 years ago as well.

373 Chris' second mix

Only slightly less diverse than then last offering from Chris.  This is a solid late 90's punk mix aside from the first two tracks on side B.  It was a running joke that I hate NOFX, and my friends would always put one of their tracks on a mix just to spite me, or in their words "trying to covert me."  Despite being out of place, it is nice to have Portishead and the Dream Syndicate as a break in the flow here.  Some more hardcore/metal incorporated in side two.  Rather surprised to find Incubus in the mix, as I don't remember that track or Chris ever being a fan of theirs.  However, Chris was the biggest Faith No More fan I can remember, until this one girlfriend of his, and when they broke up I don't think he listened to them anymore.  I'm sure I don't have all the pieces to that story.  Part of the fun of being friends with a band is having bootleg copies of their rare tracks that didn't make it on a CD.  Sadly that Los Villains track is lost to the ages...or until I hook up a cassette player and rip it from this mix.  I swapped out another song from them to close this mix.

371 Mark's third mix

I think this was from around 2002, when I would visit San Diego often.  All hip hop and turntablism.  Some fun tracks in there, and a few tracks that were found in those early days of file swapping on the web.  Couldn't figure out what track this is from Invisibl Skratch Piklz, and based on the time I made this mix it really could've been any turntable crew doing a crazy track.  Omitted the last Funkdoobiest track as in hindsight I don't like it or the message it sends.

00:00  A Tribe Called Quest - Luck of Lucien
04:27  Jurassic 5 - Unified Rebelution
08:45  The Black Eyed Peas - one Way (Karma remix)

369 Claudia mix 2

Second mix from Claudia in the early 2000's.  Similar to the last one I posted from her, this is a solid mixed bag of tracks.  Not as much history to share as I don't remember this tape as well as the other.  Though I do remember playing this on several trips up to Denver for concerts.  Obviously the first track on side B was a joke, and no clue what this is.  If I ever dust off and plug in my cassette deck I will likely get it sorted.

368 Chris' mix

Chris is still a very close friend of mine.  Back in high school and early college years when we hung out 5 days out of every 7, he was the most open to what everyone called "that crazy Mooz music."  Yeah, I liked what no one else in my friend group could stand, except for Chris.  He'd always give my mixtapes a good honest full listen before heaping on any criticism.  He also would show that he did find some stuff he liked as reflected in his mixes back to me.  This one shows that in abundance.

I'd have never given Husker Du/Sugar/Bob Mould that much attention if it weren't for Chris.  He was a big fan, but not too pushy.  There was always a conversation to be had on the subject, and I credit him for taking me from a casual listener to avid fan of his work.  I returned the favor by exposing Chris to Mission of Burma, and he's still as big a fan of their works as ever.

Side A runs the gamut from the Cure to Sick of it All and Citizen Fish.  Early Helmet tracks are great, before they really got too polished in their execution.  I remember the Citizen Fish show at the Mercury Cafe in 1996 was probably the wildest and most violent show I've been to.  Chairs thrown, people pushed down two flights of stairs, a fight between every song.

On Side B there are two tracks that I just couldn't track down the songs for this rebuilt mix.  I think I found one, but it was mislabeled on my hard drive so not 100% on the Circus Tents song.  The Gain being the other track I couldn't find.  Knowing my dislike for the Grateful Dead, my friend slipped in this Jane's Addiction cover thinking I wouldn't notice.  Then the Subhumans, which every punk should love. The Queers are always good for a juvenile chuckle.  This was the time we all found out about the Templars and were in a rush to see who could buy all their albums first.  Nice seeing early AFI on here, before they became what they used to protest - like the song High School Football Hero, or I want a mohawk but my mom won't let me get one.  Great punk after this track though, and Chris ended with some more nod's to my taste with Shelter, DRI, and of course Miles.

Still loving this mix, it has enough variety and only a couple tracks that I skip when listening now.

367 Mark's mix 2

Another one of mine, with a lot of doubles in here.  Maybe I was making that the theme, or maybe I couldn't decide between the two tracks.  Who knows, it was over 20 years back.  Not as separated by the sides as the last one, this is a good mix of alternative, industrial, reggae, punk, some jazz and my personal heart-warming genre of classical guitar.  Starting it with "those songs" and quickly moving along to the Clash's iconic track.  Then switching gears heavily to the Tear Garden before moving to some alternative rock with Dinosaur Jr and my favorite of their early tracks.  Lush's punkier side from their first few EPs, and reusing this Jane's addiction medley of the Doors, X, and The Germs.  Early Pixies is the era I like most, they're one of those bands where its my opinion they started out strong, and started to wane a little with each subsequent release.  I don't know, Dootlittle is pretty solid of an album, but after that I only liked a couple tracks off each subsequent album.  Jesus and Mary Chain easily leads into some punk via the Misfits and The Stitches.  Four is a local Denver band, and they must have opened for nearly every concert I went to for about 3 or 4 years.  I remember running from the tear gas with a member of their band after a riot broke out at a Propagandhi show which foolishly was held in a DAV.  Hmm, next notable track is Verve, I really liked their early works, then completely lost interest overnight and don't remember why.  Sarah McLachlan was interesting before her true calling as the one making you cry at all those ASPCA commercials.  The 12" with the Rabbit in the Moon remixes is solid gold, easily one of my favorite singles in my collection.  RevCo and Fred just for fun, then Wire makes an appearance as this was the time when I struggled to get my friends to give them a chance.  I touted Pink Flag as the punk juggernaut it was, yet my friends all chose later albums as their entry point and couldn't figure out what I was talking about.  Then my friend Tony got a copy of the Dot Dash 7" and everyone else in our group was converted.  Just have to find that right track to change someone's mind.  Billie Holiday brings in the final genre shifts, before the flamenco infected Coil track, and Elliot Fisk performing two of the classical guitar pieces I was working on at the time.

00:00  Sublime - Smoke Two Joints
02:53  Sublime - Lets Go Get Stoned

366 Mark's Mix 1

A mix of my own devices.  I likely make this for a friend, and then made a copy for myself.  Pretty certain this was late 90s as I was pretty excited to get the Wire tribute album "Whore."  Typical for the era, I made one side alternative and some industrial, and that slowly gets more punky until you get to side B which is mostly punk.

365 Claudia mix tape from 2000

A few weeks ago I was feeling nostalgic and while rummaging through my stock pile of boxes from previous eras of my life, I found all my cassette tapes.  Hundreds of them.  Then I found a box within a box that had a dozen or so mixtapes that friends had made me in the late 90's early 2000's.  I really miss that era of swapping physical media with friends: the effort of making a mixtape, artwork and tracklist by hand, careful selection of tracks that you think your friend will like and those that will push some boundaries, and others that are there for pure comedy.

Over the next couple weeks I'll be sharing several of these, with as much backstory as my old brain can remember.

The first is from my good friend and former roommate Claudia.  She has gone on to much greater things in the Pacific Northwest, but when this tape was made she was the manager of Independent Records and we had many thorough and enlightening conversations about music.  This tape in particular was on heavy rotation for years, I remember loving it more that most of the others I had at the time.  Side A was the alternative selection, and side B was hip hop and rap.  Two sides to both our personalities at the time, though we were both avid punk and reggae fans.  I recall that Claudia included many of these side A tracks because she knows how much I loved these groups; specifically Mazzy Star, Breeders and the Sundays.  The Deee-Lite track was chosen because we both had the same a-ha moment together recognizing the Clash sample at the beginning.  Elastica is there because I recall telling Claudia that I thought Elastica was unoriginal and could only copy riffs from Wire.  The next two Deee-Lite tracks were from that era where there were hidden songs at the end of a CD, making excessive use of the fast forward button to get through several minutes of silence.

Side B starts off with a fun and funky remix that I keep getting stuck in my head.  The rest is hip hop, and some solid late 90's tunes here.  Black Eyed Peas way before their super stardom changed everything about them.  Probably my favorite Redman track up next, supplemented by the incredible Busta Rhymes.  Then the Beatnuts, which I had totally forgotten about until I dug up this tape and remembered, yeah I used to listen to them A LOT.  Outkast, also before their mega hits changed their sound completely.  Jay-Z, ok yeah still not a huge fan of his though it is nice revisiting some classic tracks like this one.  Another wonderful Black Eyed Peas track, an earworm for the workday for sure.  Then taking a bit dirty and raw with Goodie Mob and Lil Jon.  Not my style, though I do bump these very hard when they come on.

364 Things got weird in the 80's dubs

Here is a mix that starts off with some solid gold classic tracks (not from the 80's), and then moves into weird 1980's "dub" territory, then back to some more standard fare dubs.  80s Dub in a loose sense of the term, as this is not reggae.  Mostly dub production techniques applied to 80's pop hits.  I love the Beat, or the English Beat as they're known this side of the Atlantic.  It surprises me that there aren't more dub tracks as I think their music lends itself quite well to the style.  This Ziggy Marley remix jumps out thanks to the inclusion of the most recognizable sample, "Genius of Love" by Tom Tom Club.  Bruce?  The Boss in Dub?  Nah, though I included it here as it fits the theme. Bananarama reminding people they sang about a cruel summer long before the Swifties picked up on it.  This one is a pretty good dub mix to be honest.  The Sugarcubes, sure not a big surprise here.  Modern English is another that tries to make it work, though I don't think it quite makes it.  Chapterhouse, ok I left the 80's for a moment because this fits in well and I do like the mix overall.  Massive Attack reminding us why their collaboration with Mad Professor was a highlight in their otherwise excellent discography.  Another track from the Beat, this given a much more modern and updated remix which I rather like.  Panda Bear, Sonic Boom and Adrian Sherwood taking us back to recent times on this solid track.  Prince Fatty paying homage to Kraftwerk.  Now this is where it gets weird(er), Venetian Snares dubbing up Black Sabbath.  Don't know anywhere else you'll hear Bananarama and Venetian Snares in the same mix, so I'll share a smug grin to that.  Twilight Circus because, yeah why not, I'm likely to include them in every dub mix that I make.   Blackfilm is here as I had just ordered a replacement CD when I was making this mix.  Jah Wobble and Laswell are always welcome in this style and help to shed that weird 80's stuff from earlier.   Future Pilot in a slightly edited form before having some whiplash and throwing back to the 80's for Boy George's solid track - also curious why there aren't more dub versions of the Culture Club, a missed opportunity in my opinion.

363 Punk's Not Dead

Nostalgic, solid punk rock.  Not that pop-punk stuff, which I could hardly stand.  Just angsty, raw, energetic and fun.  My take on the genre was that the more polished and produced it sounded, the less punk it really was.

362 Hip Hop Down Other

A chill mix with plenty of variety, well chill after the bombastic opening and slightly out of place ending.  Came from digging up The Earthlings CD, and aching to revisit all those rare mixes from Portishead (maybe not so rare anymore).  The rest I filled in the gaps with some similarly themed songs.  I was happy to find those two guest appearances from Butterfly with Digable Planets, under his other monikers.  Love the Stereo MC's remix, but its Steve Hillage so what's not to enjoy there?  This Jah Wobble track has quickly become my daughter's favorite.  She loves chanting Om Namah Shiva, and likes telling the story of the white python she saw at the zoo named Shiva.  The Jack Danger's track from the Ginsberg tribute is quite a standout there, and harkens back to the Subliminal Sandwich era, where he still threw in fun tracks on his albums.  Found a great odd track from Modern English that I never would've suspected was theirs.  Then more Earthlings with a great track including Lemmy Kilmister and the Violent Femmes. Ending with Faithless, just because the song is like my name (real and alias).

361 Indie Folk covers

A lighter mood than the last two sets of covers.  The first track is admittedly ripped from  YouTube as there hasn't been a proper recording of it by Hannah Rarity, its such a fantastic rendition I couldn't resist including it.  Then a solid cover of Cat Stevens by Father John Misty.  Pretty sure I've shared this one before, its Antony covering Fleetwood Mac, making their music tolerable for me.  Another Frightened Rabbit cover, that was released before their recent tribute album "Tiny Changes."  J Mascis makes another appearance here, with a less noisy cover than his Cure one.  Marissa Nadler is a favorite, and honestly I prefer her sets of cover songs more than some of her albums.  My Morning Jacket doing an oldie the justice it deserves.  When I heard this about 10 years back, it made me nostalgic and I rewatched the movie with Corey Feldman and Jason Robards, which isn't the best but still enjoyable.  Next up is a perennial favorite, and even more enjoyable hearing the man in black team up with Joe Strummer.  Another Dinosaur Jr song?  It was listed as Dinosaur Jr, but its actually J Mascis solo.  Yeah, cause this one is so fantastic it had to be included here.  Following that gem up with another solid Smith's cover done with the thick accent from the Twilight Sad.

I listed the next song by the artists names, as it wasn't officially a Monsters of Folk song or appearance, and yes I did truncate the ending because they keep going on and on, which I felt detracts from the rest of the great song.  I saw this track on Khayem's blog recently, doing a Suzanna Hoffs overview, and here it is again.  I never thought I'd see a Broadcast cover, but here it is from Of Montreal nonetheless.    Bonnie Pink doing a great service to another of my favorite bands, The Sundays.  Sturgill putting his country twang on a Nirvana classic which works very well in this style.  I had a hard time deciding between this and his cover of "The Promise."  Yo La Tengo had to make an appearance somewhere, I mean come on, they do the marathon of covers for WFMU's pledge drive every year and they can pretty much nail any song.  Bonnie Dobson from a Shirley Collins tribute album, which is one of those things where Shirley just arranged songs, so is it really a tribute when the artists are doing their own arrangements of traditional songs?  Still, love anytime I can give props to Shirley Collins, the secret Queen of England.

I previously shared a lot of songs from Faye Wong on the Cocteau Twins posts here, and this time she's doing a pretty faithful cover of the Sundays.  As we near the end, I included Seu Jorge from the Life Aquatic soundtrack, which if you don't know is all Brazilian acoustic covers of David Bowie for the entire film.  Jose Gonzalez appears here with his emotional cover of Massive Attack.  Naevus, a neo-folk post-industrial group, gives their respect to Pink Floyd showing their influence spans genres.  Ending it with Kate Walsh (not the actress), I had to look it up to be sure) and her cover of Lush which I like a lot.
