584 Around and about some Post-Country

Took a little break there, the ebb and flow of life can sometimes get overwhelming.   I'm back and hope to continue with my regular cadence of sharing mixes a few times a week.

I was picking up my daughter at school and complimented another dad on his excellent "Murder By Death" t-shirt.  One of the other Dads I was with said he'd never heard of them before.  Upon my recommendation to start with their covers albums, he quickly became a big fan and bought tickets to see them on this tour.  

That exchange got me moving along on this mix, which I had started with some ambient Americana tracks for my series on that topic, though quickly moved into post-country territory.  I also broke out my Possessed by Paul James records which are quite entertaining.  Included some odd ball country tracks I came across, like the one in Eastbound and Down, the Jim Keach track was sampled by the Orb in their YMO "Tong Poo" remixes which is just wild, and then closed it with that Elmer track from a punk rock compilation "Songs About Drinking."

A fun set of cover songs that I'd been enjoying lately.  Was a good trip down memory lane hearing these again as I've had most in my collection for quite a while.  The image here is a quilt, which I have an appreciation for the effort and craftsmanship put into them after spending a lot of time talking with the artists at the recent 4-H exhibit at our county fair.  Side note, my daughter took 1st place in her category at the fair and is now headed to the state fair later this month, exciting times for the Mooz household.

498 9A Am I Seeing Doubles?

The next two mixes are also from that same stash of unearthed mixes from 2006.  This one however has been modernized somewhat.  What I found was a mix that had about 8 or 9 artists with two tracks, and about 6 more artists with only one track.  I figured I'd update this a bit, so I could have two separate mixes with one track from each of these artists.  I really wanted this to work out where it would be the same order of artists on both mixes, but the tracks just didn't flow that well together.  There are a couple anomalies between these two mixes, but I don't think it matters that much in the grand scheme of things.

490 Shadows mix A

Ending 2024 with an appropriately somber and mellow couple of mixes. 

I've wanted to use this opening Piano Magic track for a long time, but never found the right place for it.  I finally thought, what about shadows... and by sheer luck, an episode of Kids in the Hall came on and the theme song is from Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet and I knew I had my theme.  Fortunately, Current 93 has plenty of songs with Shadow in the title so I was off to a great start.  Plus, I have been hanging on to this picture for a while.  Its a fan made comic strip using the lyrics from that opening track by Piano Magic.  Always thought this was pretty cool.

Nothing original here, this has to be a common theme for playlists.  This is my take.  Had originally planned just a one to ten, then remembered this great Godflesh cover, and this Nick Cave song came on rotation so I felt I needed to continue it.   I almost stopped at 21 as it was hard searching for this title as 99% of the search results were for Twenty One Pilots, ugh!  At least I remembered King Crimson, which kept this one moving along.   Honestly, after thirty I really struggled to find anything I cared enough about to include.

459 What the water gave me

A mix of some nice mellow indie folk and some stone cold classics.  Whenever I have a stressful day, this Spiritualized track is what helps me calm down again.  I've been having conversations with a guy that works for me about Leonard Cohen; he said he had never paid much attention to him so I am giving him plenty of accessible entry points to correct that oversight.  I love the version of Dirtnap Stories by :Of The Wand And The Moon: but the original version fits better in this set.  However, the cover of Mantra on an acoustic fits better than the original by Shelter.  I saw an Instagram post where Ray played this on an acoustic, but it was only 30 seconds, and I really liked the more mellow sound to it. (Note that the other two tracks are included in the spotify playlist, as the ones I listed below weren't available which is very odd). I remember putting this Mountain Goats song on mix tapes for friends just to piss them off with how he pronounces Morrissey (which is intentional).

454 Latest Ideas mix 1

These are all songs that popped in my head over the last couple weeks.  A few things of note...

The Neither/Neither World cover is quite nice, and had a good chuckle when my wife mistook the opening chords for "Every Rose Has Its Thorn," which she attributed to Motley Crue.  Love her and her mistakes in naming bands and songs.  She's the type that will sing loud and proud, even if she gets the lyrics wrong.  I love this instrumental track from LPD, you can definitely feel Ryan's influence here as this is not just instrumental, but a dubbed out remix of a stellar track from that era.   The HNIA track is from the Shaving the Pavement compilation which N0 had so kindly helped me track down - its not that much different from the album version, but it does have that trademark Warn Defever extra bit at the end.  Marina Allen sounds like she nicked this one from the early 2000-era HNIA.

The Girl in Red track was a wonderful surprise, a very positive and uplifting track that I am so happy my daughters like and will listen to this.  Then a rare early version of Procession, and a track from my favorite Talking Head's album (I think I may be in the minority on that one).  The weirdest Joy Division track, which its worth tracking down the Tortoise cover of this one.  Moving into some absolute staples of 90's alternative rock - I'd gone out for some beers with some fellow dads and they couldn't stop talking about this kind of stuff and it stuck in my head for weeks afterwards.  

The Filter track is one of those songs that my wife and I could sing along to, and always forgot what band performed it.  The Stone Roses from a rehearsal tape provided by Madchester Rave-On before they went private on that blog.  Talulah Gosh again, because that's the namesake of my puppy.  A demo from the Buck Pets which though simple, is quite an excellent track.  The Walkmen, which came up on the radio recently and I realized I never really dove into their catalog much, an oversight I am currently remedying.  

A rare Pixies track from the Rubáiyát compilation.  Frank Turner, also played heavily on the local indie radio station.  DFL48 which I have to break out every couple months because that album is just so dang good.  More from Los Villains as I'm so happy I found and dug out their CD from my archives in storage.  My younger daughter has very strong opinions that Operation Ivy is great, but Common Rider is just a little bit better.  Heard my friends' band cover Face to Face recently and that made me very happy.  Then wrapping it up with an out of place Deftones song on this mix, just cause.  And a fun German track, which is entertaining to translate the lyrics.
