593 The Remix According to Cut Chemist

I miss the height of turntablism in the late 90's early 2000's.  For a while it felt like this genre could take over.  His DJ mixes "Rare Equations", "Live at the Future Primitive" with Shortkut, "Brainfreeze" and "Product Placement" with DJ Shadow were a permanent fixture in my car stereo.  He has mad skills, and thats the best way to put it.  Cut Chemist's contributions to Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli are top notch too.  He also released a compilation of rare/unreleased gems from Vox Populi! and Pacific 231; that one really surprised me.  I'm thrilled to see he is still very productive and tackling genres that go far beyond hip hop.

Zion Train are a reggae dance group that blends styles to something their own.  Founding member Neil Perch taught himself production and composition after completing a masters in biochemistry.  The band ran their own label Universal Egg as a way to release their own music, but quickly expanded to other like minded and sounding artists.

Eat Static is so much more than ex-members of Ozric Tentacles, though that is quite a credential on one's resume.  Merv and Joie stated that they took their name from Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, which is pretty cool in my book.  Despite having a pretty clear style for their original music, these remixes really do showcase their diversity and strength manipulating the source material.

Time to get those dancing shoes on.  This is not entirely a funk mix, just some dance oriented music that isn't techno.  Seeing !!! perform in or around 2000 was certainly a highlight and a fun evening.  I still think their first self titled album was their peak.  Same with the related group OutHud, they were on a roll until they added vocals, just wasn't my cup of tea.  Hope this mix gets you movin and a-grooving!  I sure can't sit still while listening to it.

454 Latest Ideas mix 3

These are some of the more out there tracks I've been jamming on recently.   Starting this with my love of ambient country/Americana.  I'd seen this Bruce Kaphan album referenced in a review of SUSS, so had to check it out.  Next is a very ambient piece by Calexico which I like a lot.  Hermanos Gutierrez is yet another artist I've come across via Tiny Desk Concerts.  They have the best vibe to their music, I want to chill on my porch at dusk sipping a good tequila to this.  Steven Wilson remixed by Fear Falls Burning is exactly what you'd expect from that pairing.  Spook, the Belgian one (apparently there are many by this name), are hard to nail down though quite engaging.  

This Ka-Spel track comes from a compilation called "Chillicious" and if that wasn't bizarre enough, it also features an early track from Orbit Service when they were mostly still a local Denver band (Randall is now a full time member of the Legendary Pink Dots following the Silverman's retirement).  O Yuki Conjugate brings that creepy ambience and groove like they do best.  This leads us right into Tarta Relena, a new one to me which was also brought to my attention through their amazing Tiny Desk Concert.  These two Spanish Ladies make some mesmerizing and ancient sounding music with a modern flair.  Listening to them reminded me of Holly Herndon's work, so naturally I included this next.  Alluded to in the previous mix, I've been on a Laika binge, so here is their Wire cover in all is glory.  

Just when you think you have every thing from this era, someone goes and posts a promo only remix of an early hit track;  amazing stuff.  Georgia is some dark grimy trance; what I'd always hoped some trance artists might end up sounding like when I was going to raves in the 90s.  Erik Levander reminds me of some Third Eye Foundation, but without the tense fast breaks with maybe some Tigerbeat6 glitch in there.  Last but not least is Frl. Tost, half of one of my favorite groups Novy Svet.  Her partner Jurgen Weber has done his fair share of guest and solo released, while Frl. Tost has seemingly only released this track and one on the Mushroom's Patience solo tracks 7".  I have always wondered if she would release more solo work, but have not found anything.

415 The Remix According To Muslimgauze

This one took me a lot of time to work through.  Finding the sources for all these Muslimgauze tracks was no easy hill to climb, but the view from the top is amazing.  I divided this into four parts, or two pairs of mixes.  The first one is the original tracks, and the second mix is what Muslimgauze turned them into.  The third mix is the Suns of Arqa and Rootsman tracks which Bryn Jones did full album remixes of, so those are paired up on the fourth mix with what he did with that source material.

The tracks pretty much line up, but there are some 1:2 or 2:1 relationships here.  Such as Talvin Singh's "Soft Works" became "Hard Rest" and "More Hard Rest" from Muslimgauze.  And Scientist and Dave/Ansel Collins became "Holy Man."  Systemwide's "Nommos" became both "Nommos' Ark" and "Nommos' Ghosts," because I wanted to showcase the diversity applied in Bryn's remixes.  

I know there are dozens if not hundreds more that could be added here (I had another 40 or so tracks tagged for this project).  I'd love to know if anyone else has matched up source material with remix from Muslimgauze.

I love the first track on this mix, and for the longest time that was the only thing I had from Fun-Da-Mental.  Then I realized I had them on the "This is Fascism" album, and knew I needed to hear more from them.  Quite a global approach to hip hop.  Sometimes sounding like the Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, and some times more like Talvin Singh.  Always intriguing and hard to pinpoint.

283 - Quirky Summertime Jams

Music for the Summer Solstice 2022.  Nothing really spiritual about this, other than the timing of it all last year.  A little bit of everything in here, just how I like it.  Love the layered vocals of this Spiritualized track, still one of my favorites of theirs.  I was blown away by Bob Mould's remix as it was completely unexpected.  The Joe Strummer/Jack Kerouac track is also a nice find of recent years.  This Midwinter track does appear in several of my mixes, and my kids like singing the chorus too, placed here as a great segue to In Gowan Ring and Sol Invictus.  Then some globe travelling before heading back to a one off with the former member of Scorn and Bill Laswell for a mellow but unsettling end to this mix.

256 - Fun and Funky mix

Yep, this is a fun and funky mix for sure.  Very reflective of a point in time for me, but also nostalgic for some history.  I was re-watching Enter the Dragon when I realized the soundtrack kicks some serious butt.  A local radio station played this Roxy Music track, which honestly I'd never heard before and I got into the groove.  There's a lot of crate digging for sample sources like Bob James (come on, everyone should recognize this), Onesness of Juju (FSOL), Shamek Farrah (Scorn), Ken Thorne (Portishead), Mina (Elvis Costello) Shub Niggurath (Scorn).  The track from Selda is a great protest song, worth it to look up the translated lyrics.  My phone's ringtone was this Hildegard von Bingen song for quite a while, can't listen to it without looking at my phone now.  It took me far too long to track down this Dimitri from Tokyo EP, my friend had this on vinyl back in the 90s, and he swore up and down that this was Dmitry from Deee-Lite, which I believed for the last 20-30 years.  My last annecdote is that I sadly first heard The Damned on Phantasmagoria, when I really should have started at the beginning with Damned Damned Damned, anyhow this track stuck with me for is sillyness for a goth/punk band.

Another wonky, all over the map kind of mix. Some classic hip hop remixes, some worldly travels, some post-punk, dub and everything in-between. I remember being so intrigued knowing that DJ Spooky did a remix of Earth.  I looked for it everywhere, before realizing I had some Amazon digital credits and could just buy the MP3 there easily.

303 - Laswell's Delicate Touch

I couldn't resist, here is a bonus 7th mix in this series.

This is presented far out of order, but it closes out the week of adoration of Bill Laswell.  Last summer I went hiking with a close friend and we listened to the Laswell remix/reconstruction of Miles Davis' works while romping around on 4-wheel trails in the Colorado mountains.  It was a magnificent experience for me, one of the first times I got out after major surgery, and really kickstarted my healing process by surrounding myself with nature.  At the time, I was also heavily researching Ayurveda practices and implementing lifestyle changes and found so much of Laswell's music as a perfect background for meditation and reciting mantras.  Later that year I picked up his Lost Remix series from his bandcamp page, and that really ignited my desire to finish this last overview mix.  Its a long one, but probably my favorite that I've made.
