559A Weirdos Having Fun

Yeah, Wonderful Weirdo's day is still a few weeks away, so I'm getting these next few mixes out in your hands so you are well prepared.

Maybe it was all those years listening to Vicki Bennett's "Do or DIY" radio show on WFMU.  Maybe its my disdain for pop music.  Bottom line, I love weird things.  The next several playlists highlight some oddball music that usually defies categorization.   This is the stuff I listen to when no one else is around.

348a Neu! Lineage

Those pioneers we've come to know and love over their three albums (four or five if you count those ones that really sound like a completely different band).   Yes talking about Dinger and Rother.  I recall having my mind blown when I purchased "Neu! 2" from the beachside Taang records in San Diego, along with SSD discography, DJ Spooky's "Subliminal Minded EP", Third Eye Foundation's "I poo poo on your juju" and Nurse With Wound's Automating 2.  The clerk rightly said, "Well one of these sticks out like a sore thumb."   Still, Neu! were well known by artists citing them as inspiration, and I knew the Legendary Pink Dot's cover of "Super."  I had no idea what else to expect, and I was beyond surprised.  A few months later, a roommate that worked at an Independent records pulled a copy of Neu! 1 from their incoming vinyl order, and set it aside for me.  I rushed over that afternoon to pick it up and it didn't leave my turntable for weeks.

On to this mix, as I know most readers should already know them and their history.  This mix focuses on what came after for Dinger and Rother.  Aside from Hallogallo 2010, nothing ever really lived up to the pure joy I felt hearing Neu!, but there are still some great moments, especially with Harmonia.  Here's a brief overview of their post-Neu! output.

00:00  Hallogallo 2010 - Negativland (live)
06:07  Harmonia - Monza (Rauf und Runter)
13:05  Harmonia - Live at Fabrik in Hamburg (1975)
23:49  Harmonia & Eno 76 - Atmosphere
27:03  Brian Eno & Harmonia - Trace
27:53  La Dusseldorf - Time
37:13  Michael Rother - Zyklodrom
46:39  1-A Dusseldorf - Overture
50:26  Klaus Dinger - Lilienthal
54:57  Hallogallo 2010 - Drone Schlager
59:47  La Dusseldorf - Kittelbach Symphony

338 Quirky Misfits

Sometimes I amass some great songs that are just odd enough to not really fit in other mixes.  Here I've pulled these together and they work well.  This takes me back to my teenage years where my mixes blurred genre lines from track to track, and I liked it that way.

333b Volcano The Bear

The second mix, split because even as big of a fan as I am I have a hard time sitting through more than an hour of this without a break.  This half has more of the same and includes tracks from the "Five Hundred Boy Piano", which is a reference to an old Dr Seuss live action movie.  I have a copy of the 5000 Fingers of Dr T on VHS, which I tracked down because Meat Beat Manifesto sampled it ("Yes sir very atomic!").  That is one strange movie and the VTB music sounds like it could fit as part of the soundtrack.

Check out the special Brainwashed.com produced on them: Volcano The Bear on The EYE

333a Volcano The Bear

The wonderful and truly weird world of Volcano the Bear.  I've been a fan and collector for many years and have never found any other group quite like them.  Generally lumped in with avant garde, freak folk, or free jazz, I really think they are something totally different.  The music is chaotic and controlled, naive and skilled, beautiful and abrasive, all things at once.

I first came across them through Brainwashed.com, and specifically a review citing Steven Stapleton as a fan - he even released one of their early albums on United Dairies. Then came the flood of CDrs of live performances and small run vinyl editions from the likes of Beta Lactam Ring Records.  I was lucky enough to score several of those editions.  While never officially disbanding, around 2015 they released the 5LP set "Commencing" which collected all the odds and ends and unused material and this kind of felt like the end in my opinion.  Their artwork is always entertaining, I get a lot of questions on the "Yak Folks Y'are" LP that I usually leave on display in my bookshelf.

Here is the first of two mixes of what I consider their best work.

00:00  Oslo Top
01:32  Expert
05:53  Reahs Mort
09:26  Planetary Bethlehem
10:56  The Sting of Haste

55:57  Digging for Opera
63:33  Before I Was After'd

314e Andrew Liles Noisy mix

...and this is where it gets weird.  Er...weirder I suppose.  Taking things further into the extreme, sometimes noisy areas.  Great stuff here, and I didn't even dive deep into his "Monster" series, which is some of his best work IMHO.   I'm sure the casual reader has had more than enough of Mr. Liles, so the next post will be quite the palate cleanser.

314d Andrew Liles Main mix

Here's the bulk of my adoration of Andrew Lile's work.  Its all over the map stylistically speaking.  These are the tracks that captured and held my attention.  I recall how enthusiastically I threw money at Beta Lactam Ring Records to get the subscription series "Black" from Andrew Liles, for that mysterious 13th disc.  These  are some of his strongest and most consistent works, with another amazing list of guest musicians.  I bulked up my collection when Andrew offered his 13 CD-R miscellany box set all with that early iconic artwork from him.   I love how while listening to the local NPR and classical music stations, I hear little piano snippits that Andrew Liles samples for his works; always brings a sly smile to my face.  He frequently gives free downloads and deep discounts on his discography at bandcamp.

00:00  Fang (Black Panther)

314b Andrew Liles Avant Garde Drone

In this second mix, I started bridging the strangeness to the more drone and ambient territory covered by Mr. Liles.  Some longer pieces of music included here, and the casual listener will start to pick up themes from the album titles.  I probably included half of "In My Father's House..." because it is just such a darn good remix album with a roster of the who's who of industrial drone and dark ambient elite.

00:00  Mother and Son - Untitled 1 (Gazogene Machines)
02:42  Aural Anagram (Anal Aura Gram remix) (Interpolations)
19:04  8th Degree (Plug In Set) (Auto Manipulator)

314a Andrew Liles Avant Garde

Here beings a five part overview of Andrew Liles' work.  He has released so many albums I honestly cannot keep up, and I know my collection has some critical gaps.  While uploading these mixes, I found Spotify to be not worth the effort.  A quick search there yielded only three albums.  YouTube was better, though not enough of what I wanted to share was available.  I am hoping that these five mixes help introduce him to a new audience, or give existing fans of his work a nice reminder of the diversity of his catalog.

This first overview is focused on his unique, avant garde stylings.  Sure, most of his output falls into that category.

00:00  To Maim a Donkey Part 1 (Black Widow)
00:50  Untitled (Nocturne) (Prelude To An Un World)
02:25  Tawny (Black Mamba)

Episode 181 - Extraordinary Genius and Naïve Incompetence

A descent into madness over two hours.  My longest mix to date, but that is because it takes time to unfold all this wonderful and bizarre music.  I had so much fun compiling this one, and kept finding more tracks to add to it.  Always looking for any reason to include Volcano the Bear and The Residents into a mix, this just grew with all those odd tracks I'd been saving for something special.

Episode 61 - Oddities

I love odd, unclassifiable music.  Experimental, avant garde, anything that stretches the imagination.  Sure, I scoured the infamous NWW list and found many a wonderful and challenging surprise.  The wonderful Finder's Keepers record label is currently doing a great overview of that based on country of origin.   This mix has something for everyone, and its all a bit odd.  There's a couple tracks I found on an old hard drive and I know they were not tagged correctly, so I have no idea what they actually are.

00:00 Piano Magic - I Came to Your Party
04:03 Mushrooms Patience - Blues Infected the World
07:44 Jac Berrocal - Automme Perdu
09:11 Nurse With Wound - Cooloorta Moon

As a bonus, here is a fantastic one page comic for the lyrics of the Piano Magic song - I came to your party dressed as a shadow.  I wish I had saved the artist's name or the site I originally found this on, as I am quite impressed by this interpretation.

Episode 60 - Befuddled with looming darkness

Dark ambient, and uneasiness abounds in these tracks.  A few sprinklings of stability and light peek through before closing with some aggression.  Despite the majority of their work, the Ozrics can really knock down some dark atmospherics.  Mt Fuji/Kilimanjaro drive it home with the doom jazz, along with Lech Jankowski (who scored most Brother's Quay films).  Keeping it more light with Isan, Accelera Deck (don't remember the name of this track), and a rarity from Autechre.  Some Laptoptronica to keep it quirky, and ending with some grimy dirty drum and bass.  Overall a fun and diverse mix, even if focusing on darker sounds throughout.

00:00 Ozric Tentacles - Toltec Spring
02:33 The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - Strange Dreams
06:50 Calexico - Untitled III (Two Lone Swordsmen remix)
10:46 Ozric Tentacles - Ethereal Cereal

Episode 32 - Uniquely Beautiful Abrasion

I love the obscure, the weird, the irrelevant, the unique.  While still palatable, I seek out music that isn't easily classified or categorized.  Nearly every track here represents an artist that was responsible for a lot of my musical taste development into obscure little rabbit holes of the bizarre.  Others are just fin tracks that I couldn't resist throwing in.

03:58  Volcano The Bear – Seeker (edit)

Episode 24 - Legendary Pink Dots (pt2)

LPD, the early days

Here is the second part of my overview, focused on the early era.  Their DIY ethos paired with natural talent and affinity for experimenting was the perfect mix, right out of the gate.  I still remember picking up the Legendary Pink Box when I was 13, based solely on its name.  Something called that just had to be magnificent, right?  I was not disappointed.  The version of "Close Your Eyes, You can be a Space Captain" is still my favorite from them.  I do love their albums, however it was their Chemical Playschool sessions that hooked me forever.

Episode 22 - Legendary Pink Dots (pt1)

Part 1 of many – My favorite band, and the one I’ve seen live the most times.  This is a collection of songs I keep coming back to, reminding myself of just how wonderful they are.  I've focused on my favorite era of theirs, what I call the Ryan Moore years.  With a history over 40 years with astonishing productivity the whole time, it helps to break it down by era.  This period was their largest lineup including Niels van Hoorn and Martijn De Kleer, occasionally Cevin Key (Skinny Puppy) on drums.  A little after this time period, I participated in the Cloud Zero mail list fan tribute album, and then produced the second edition of that.
