553 El-P

El-Producto, aka Jaime Stuart Meline has been an unrelenting force in rap music for three decades.  I remember getting "Funcrusher Plus" when it came out and being instantly hooked, especially the DJ Premiere remix of "8 Steps to Perfection."  El-P's production work is no joke either, Cannibal Ox made me take notice of that.  Throughout the years my favorite of his works were his guest appearances, many of which are included here along with some productions and remixes.  His career was all leading up to Run The Jewels, which is a like a late career megaton bomb.  Amazing and shows he still has a lot of gas left in the tank.

536 Nothing is Happening

The first 100 or so mixes I posted here all had a few tracks omitted, mostly due to length concerns as I try to keep everything around 75 minutes (call me nostalgic, I got stuck in this mindset when I was burning everything on CD-R's back in the day).  Fortunately, I dumped all those extra tracks into a folder and am just now revisiting them.

423 Rhyme and Reason

Time for some more hip hop, I always have a folder collecting my favorite rap tracks. Starting with RJD2 with members of Cannibal Ox and Living Legends with Aesop Rock; great collab track here. A classic because you can never have enough of tha God Rakim. Then Cypress non-album track from the Juice soundtrack. DJ Spooky with Organized Konfusion, remixed for the Subliminally Minded EP. A solid Tribe remix, then a strong collab from Ghostface and BADBADNOTGOOD. Taking it back to a memory from warped tour 96 or so when I saw the Alkaholiks, spewing their OE 40's all over the crowd. Mos Def and Talib Kweli really were one of the best pairings in my opinion, next to Method Man and Redman. Phife Dawg is someone I feel needs more props for his guest appearances, he always came in prime form. Of course, MF Doom, mad respect and sad I had neglected to include him in previous rap mixes, he's one of the best. Next is the Sofa Surfers from their Encounters album (well worth checking out). Hitting hard with Run The Jewels, I love this track and its window rattling bass. Segues perfectly into Roots Manuva on a banger here as well. Vast Aire's second appearance, followed by Dalek's second as well, both with other groups so doesn't break that mixtape rule. And ending it all with a rare novelty track, because I am a big fan of the Zelda series of games and this track really does a great job touching on several versions in that history up to and including Breath of the Wild.

00:00 RJD2 feat Blueprint, Vast Aire, Aesop Rock & Murs - Final Frontier (Remix)
04:06 Eric B & Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique
08:13 Cypress Hill - Shoot 'em Up
11:45 DJ Spooky feat Prince Poetry and Pharoah Monch - Rekonstruction (Rhyme and Reason mix)
15:23 A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation (Properly Relaxed Mix)
20:25 Ghostface Killer with BADBADNOTGOOD feat Elzhi - Gunshowers
23:28 The Alkaholiks feat King Tee - DAAAM!
28:06 Black Star - Definition (What We Really Said Version)
31:26 Phife Dawg and Fu-Schnickens - La Schmoove
36:18 MF Doom - Kon Queso
40:18 Sofa Surfers feat Dalek and Dev1 - Elusive Scripts
44:48 Run The Jewels - Legend Has It
48:13 Roots Manuva - Swords n the dirt

365 Claudia mix tape from 2000

A few weeks ago I was feeling nostalgic and while rummaging through my stock pile of boxes from previous eras of my life, I found all my cassette tapes.  Hundreds of them.  Then I found a box within a box that had a dozen or so mixtapes that friends had made me in the late 90's early 2000's.  I really miss that era of swapping physical media with friends: the effort of making a mixtape, artwork and tracklist by hand, careful selection of tracks that you think your friend will like and those that will push some boundaries, and others that are there for pure comedy.

Over the next couple weeks I'll be sharing several of these, with as much backstory as my old brain can remember.

The first is from my good friend and former roommate Claudia.  She has gone on to much greater things in the Pacific Northwest, but when this tape was made she was the manager of Independent Records and we had many thorough and enlightening conversations about music.  This tape in particular was on heavy rotation for years, I remember loving it more that most of the others I had at the time.  Side A was the alternative selection, and side B was hip hop and rap.  Two sides to both our personalities at the time, though we were both avid punk and reggae fans.  I recall that Claudia included many of these side A tracks because she knows how much I loved these groups; specifically Mazzy Star, Breeders and the Sundays.  The Deee-Lite track was chosen because we both had the same a-ha moment together recognizing the Clash sample at the beginning.  Elastica is there because I recall telling Claudia that I thought Elastica was unoriginal and could only copy riffs from Wire.  The next two Deee-Lite tracks were from that era where there were hidden songs at the end of a CD, making excessive use of the fast forward button to get through several minutes of silence.

Side B starts off with a fun and funky remix that I keep getting stuck in my head.  The rest is hip hop, and some solid late 90's tunes here.  Black Eyed Peas way before their super stardom changed everything about them.  Probably my favorite Redman track up next, supplemented by the incredible Busta Rhymes.  Then the Beatnuts, which I had totally forgotten about until I dug up this tape and remembered, yeah I used to listen to them A LOT.  Outkast, also before their mega hits changed their sound completely.  Jay-Z, ok yeah still not a huge fan of his though it is nice revisiting some classic tracks like this one.  Another wonderful Black Eyed Peas track, an earworm for the workday for sure.  Then taking a bit dirty and raw with Goodie Mob and Lil Jon.  Not my style, though I do bump these very hard when they come on.

352 Rap Classics

Many of these tracks came up while discussing the history of Hip Hop with my daughters.  I joked that it was so bizarre that my mother let me keep Run D.M.C's "Raising Hell" and the soundtrack to "Juice" but objected to the Dead Milkmen's "Beelzebubba" and thought Prince's "Purple Rain" was too mature (I mean look at that inlay photo!).

And a shout out to NPR for hosting Cypress Hill on Tiny Desk Concerts recently.

Episode 52 - Only True Grit Left in Cohen Brothers Flicks

This mix features a good selection of styles, most with a little more edge than my previous two mixes of this genre.  Iconaclass is the frontman from my favorite noisy hip hop group Dalek, Oktober was a pleasant surprise when I was actually searching for a Krautrock band of the same name.  I included some turntabilism, and the crafty live instrumentation of Live Human is on full display.  Some downtempo/illbient pieces fit well in the middle, then bridging on some industrial items.  That Nasenbluten track is just bonkers and uses rap (and The Shining) samples to great effect - though I edited a good 6 or 7 minutes of the track as the novelty wears off quickly.  EBN's one and only full album is chalk full of gems:  produced by Jack Dangers, featuring royalty on the MC duties, Bill Laswell has his hands in the pot, and they got their funding by doing visuals for U2's Zooropa tour.  And then, of course I had to wrap this all up with some absolute classics that everyone should have in their collection.

00:00 Iconaclass - Out of Patience
03:51 Oktober - Cell Block
06:56 Cypress Hill - Throw Your Set In The Air (Club Remix)
