605 Things Only Found Here

Having trolled the depths of the blogosphere for decades now, I can say that most of this set are songs you might only find here.  I've shared what background I have as to what makes these rare.  Some are oddball compilations that had limited runs, others are local bands that probably didn't make it outside our community.  Still others are gems from the forgotten age of email lists where bands might share exclusives with their fans, predating Patreon.

A2 - Woman of Dark Desires (Bathory)
From Todesblei Salonfähig Gemacht on Treue Um Treue, withdrawn LP likely due to copyright infringement.
A band from Colorado Springs, I used to hang with the drummer pretty often.  This might be their only recorded song.
Aion - What you need (feat Sotero)
A brother/sister combo I was friends with in High School.  Got some stories about both of them.
Crackerbash - Untitled
A hidden track on the LP.  I didn't know about it until I bought both the CD and LP and saw they each had a different hidden track, the CD's track was rereleased as the B side to Jasper 7"
Current 93 vs Bomb the Bass - Calling for Vanished Faces 1
A mashup that works better than I had imagined.  I remember the original mixer contacted me when I expressed appreciation for this on the C93 mail list, I don't remember who they were now.
Danny Hyde - The Great White Hype
An oddball freebie from Danny Hyde in the late 90s.
Der Blutharsch - A Rocking 2005
A freebie from the email distribution list back in 2005.
A version performed on a Commodore 64, credited to Taciturne
DJ Krazy - Krazy Groove (Seba and Lotek Mix by Alexi Deliano)
A track from the 12" supplement to OffBeat: A Red Hot Soundtrip album, I believe I've shared the other three tracks from this already.
Earthmonkey - The Name is Your Name
A gift from Pete Bog when I pre-ordered the album Audiosapien, yeah he didn't pronounce my name right, but who cares.
Four - Punkest way to Die (Live in Hangar 18)
Local band I probably saw two dozen times in the late 90s.
Gamelan Tunas Mekar - Puspanjali (traditional dance)
Our local Gamelan orchestra who I am pleased to see at least once a year.
Gnostic Gnomes - Der Tanza des Wurzelwichts
I call this a Novy Svet side-project, but they're likely more than just that.
His Name Is Alive - The Happy Cause its Only Getting Worse Blues
No idea where I came across this, likely the now defunct Time Stereo website, or email list back in the day.
Jowonio Productions - Apocalypse with Dill Pickle (Imperium II by Current 93)
I think I bought this from a list member back when I was on the COIL email distro.  A fun lil CD with Merzbow featured on one of the tracks.
Ken Rubenstein - Legs Akimbo
A flexi 7" from Guitar Player magazine.  I think this may be up on YouTube.
Kid606 - Break22
La Maison Moderne - Untitled
A hidden track on the only EP from this side project of Albin Julius.  Supposedly a result of too much wine in the recording studio, however this track and the opener are both pretty solid.
Their drummer used to be the drummer in my band.  They did release a couple albums, then lost everything in a house fire.
Les Marquises - Only Ghosts (Volcano Mix) on top of Aube's "Pages from the Book"
Nothing really unique other than I forgot I had Aube's track playing on my mixer when I was ripping this track.  Afterwards, I like the tension this mix provided so I kept it around.
Meat Beat Manifesto - We Done (skippy)
My CD got scratched to hell, and this is the result.  I kind of like it; it stretches parts and glitches others, and honestly sounds like it could've been intentional.
O Paradis - Borra Mis Huellas
From the Punch Records compilation "Drinking to Better Days"
A local band from Pueblo, CO.  I remember this full album was played on the radio as a promotion for them, so I copied it from there.
Red Snapper - Drum Guitar and Bass Loop
Early internet find that was mislabeled, here is the CD its from..
Sponge - Clouded Vision
Sponge - Benign Neglect
A local Colorado Springs Band that predated the more popular band Sponge.  I recall the guitarist lived in the same neighborhood as me in high school;  we crossed paths and had mutual respect - not that many punks in suburbia so we had to show solidarity.  Sorry for the sound quality here, this 7" had several drinks spilled on it over the years.
The Confessions - Beautiful Sin
Formerly the Deadites (who were better IMHO), this is from their only 7".  My college friend Adam ended up opening the best vintage store that puts the Rad in ColoRADo.
The Starvations - Horrified Eyes
A friends' cousins' band, or something like that.
Vas Deferens Organization - Riding the Milky Way on Pugs and Dolphins
This is from the third birthday 7" on Beta Lactam Ring Records.  This version is unique from the one on Lactamase: The Closure which I suppose is equally rare.
Victory Boy - One Reason
I was in a band and we went separate ways, shortly afterwards with a new singer they put out this album and then they split up (likely for the same reasons my band split up).
Wild Angels - Patiently
Two friends that were at our house constantly, it was the TGIFridays wait and bartender staff hangout.  I didn't work there, but was subjected to all their antics anyway.
Moozler - Patiently
I secretly remixed the Wild Angels track back in 2002ish, I think I used some Stockhausen sounds as well but can't remember anymore.
World Separation - Cancer
This was my Mom's friend's brother's band in the 90s.  I have a different and better version of this on a cassette somewhere.
Wrong Kind of Stone Age - Prettybodywinder (Rehearsal Version)
Wrong Kind of Stone Age - Pendulum
Early versions of tracks that got my attention when the Pelican Daughters released them in a new form.  I made friends with Andy Rantzen and fanboy'd out over Pelican Daughters, so he sent me a few CDs of rarities and unreleased gems.  A decade later I helped with the remaster and digital copies available on bandcamp now.
Moozler - Pendulum (Exodus Version)
Yeah, I bootleg remixed this track as well, which caught the attention of O Paradis back on Myspace.  I take that as a highlight.

488 Zack de la Rocha's other appearances

I recall a bit of shock when I put on Lyricist's Lounge and heard Zack doing a collaboration with KRS-One, and it was quite good.  Based on that, I started to seek out all his other guest vocal performances and came up with this list, I think it has most of them.  I didn't include One Day As A Lion as that was on a recent mix, and Farside where he plays guitar because I just didn't like it and it didn't fit in anywhere on this mix.  He also played guitar in Hard Stance, so included that as it fit the vibe towards the end of this mix.

475 Early Bands

I don't recall if I was inspired by the Vinyl on Demand box set of John Balance's early works before COIL, or talking to my kids about the Green River/Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog/Mudhoney/Pearl Jam evolution.  Maybe it is my talking point about how Soul Asylum were much better when they used to be a punk band.  Nevertheless, I wanted to dust off some tracks of the early bands that helped launch musical careers of artists that are more well known for their later projects.  Some of these are very well known, like Warsaw, Gen X and Throbbing Gristle.  Others are a bit more obscure and were fun to track down.  Some tracks are low quality, like The Castiles, and I intentionally went with the demo version for Napalm Death.  The track from Earth is a fan made mix, as the original version I have of this is only a minute long, so someone cleverly mixed it onto of itself to make the track a little longer.

This is a good reminder for life.  Pay attention to where you came from, so you know where you are going.

Crap, once I finished this mix, I realized I neglected Inside Out, the first band of Zach De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, and also Blind Illusion featuring a young Les Claypool.  Oops!

00:00  101ers - Letsagetabitarockin' (The Clash)

10:12  Proud Crass Fools - Happy (Soul Asylum)
13:52  Vatican commandos - Why Must I Follow (Moby)
15:39  Deep Wound - In My Room (Dinosaur Jr)
16:41  Napalm Death - Abbatoir (Godflesh, Scorn/Mick Harris)
20:19  Warsaw - At a later date (Joy Division)
23:30  The Boys Next Door - The Nightwatchman (Nick cave)
25:30  Strontium 90 - Visions of the Night (The Police)
28:21  Earth - When I came down (Black Sabbath)
30:23  Tippi Tikarrass - Ottar (Sugarcubes/Bjork)
32:57  Easy Cure - Need Myself (The Cure)

100:11  :Zoviet*France: - Amadan (Dead Voice On Air/Rapoon)

Spotify (19/34) And some of these got replaced for other tracks.  I didn't expect much of this mix to be available there.

373 Chris' second mix

Only slightly less diverse than then last offering from Chris.  This is a solid late 90's punk mix aside from the first two tracks on side B.  It was a running joke that I hate NOFX, and my friends would always put one of their tracks on a mix just to spite me, or in their words "trying to covert me."  Despite being out of place, it is nice to have Portishead and the Dream Syndicate as a break in the flow here.  Some more hardcore/metal incorporated in side two.  Rather surprised to find Incubus in the mix, as I don't remember that track or Chris ever being a fan of theirs.  However, Chris was the biggest Faith No More fan I can remember, until this one girlfriend of his, and when they broke up I don't think he listened to them anymore.  I'm sure I don't have all the pieces to that story.  Part of the fun of being friends with a band is having bootleg copies of their rare tracks that didn't make it on a CD.  Sadly that Los Villains track is lost to the ages...or until I hook up a cassette player and rip it from this mix.  I swapped out another song from them to close this mix.

00:00  Naked Raygun - 12XU
01:49  Stiff Little Fingers - Alternative Ulster

368 Chris' mix

Chris is still a very close friend of mine.  Back in high school and early college years when we hung out 5 days out of every 7, he was the most open to what everyone called "that crazy Mooz music."  Yeah, I liked what no one else in my friend group could stand, except for Chris.  He'd always give my mixtapes a good honest full listen before heaping on any criticism.  He also would show that he did find some stuff he liked as reflected in his mixes back to me.  This one shows that in abundance.

I'd have never given Husker Du/Sugar/Bob Mould that much attention if it weren't for Chris.  He was a big fan, but not too pushy.  There was always a conversation to be had on the subject, and I credit him for taking me from a casual listener to avid fan of his work.  I returned the favor by exposing Chris to Mission of Burma, and he's still as big a fan of their works as ever.

Side A runs the gamut from the Cure to Sick of it All and Citizen Fish.  Early Helmet tracks are great, before they really got too polished in their execution.  I remember the Citizen Fish show at the Mercury Cafe in 1996 was probably the wildest and most violent show I've been to.  Chairs thrown, people pushed down two flights of stairs, a fight between every song.

On Side B there are two tracks that I just couldn't track down the songs for this rebuilt mix.  I think I found one, but it was mislabeled on my hard drive so not 100% on the Circus Tents song.  The Gain being the other track I couldn't find.  Knowing my dislike for the Grateful Dead, my friend slipped in this Jane's Addiction cover thinking I wouldn't notice.  Then the Subhumans, which every punk should love. The Queers are always good for a juvenile chuckle.  This was the time we all found out about the Templars and were in a rush to see who could buy all their albums first.  Nice seeing early AFI on here, before they became what they used to protest - like the song High School Football Hero, or I want a mohawk but my mom won't let me get one.  Great punk after this track though, and Chris ended with some more nod's to my taste with Shelter, DRI, and of course Miles.

Still loving this mix, it has enough variety and only a couple tracks that I skip when listening now.

00:00  The Cure - The Caterpillar (Flicker Mix)

315 Krishnacore

What is likely the strangest pairing in music history, Hari Krishna spirituality with hardcore punk rock.  Odd, but there are times where this magically makes something incredible.  I first came to this style when I went to see Shelter play at a skatepark back in the mid-90's.  I knew it was Ray Cappo from Youth of Today, but I never expected to see the band in full dhotis dancing in circles chanting for a good 20 minutes before they took the stage.  After the show my friends and I stayed and shared some vegan brownies and carrots with the band listening to their practices and lifestyle discussions.   It seems like a good time to share this mix, as Ray just opened pre-orders for his book, "From Punk to Monk."

This music has been with me for decades, and resurfaced during my own journey with Ayurveda and daily meditations.

287 - Walter Schreifels

Without a doubt, one of my favorite musicians is Walter Schreifels.  His resume is astonishing.  I've pulled together a short overview of his career, focused on bands he played in, or sang with.  I didn't include albums he produced but didn't appear on.  There's some sound quality issues on a couple tracks (Gorilla Biscuits w/ Walter singing, Moondog and World's Fastest Car) because some of these groups only released demos.  Quicksand and Rival Schools are on here twice because he revived both projects after a decade or more.   Speaking of which, I'm going to the Quicksand - Slip anniversary tour later this year and I'm very excited.  I missed Quicksand last year because of some health issues, and I'm determined not to miss this one.

00:00  Youth of Today - Together
01:43  Gorilla Biscuits - High Hopes
04:05  Project X - Where it Ends

221 - Melodic Hardcore

Solid selection of melodic hardcore tracks.  Sure, I'm a bit lose with that genre, but had to include several long time favorites in this mix.  Also, likely the only time you'll hear Victory Boy online, they were my friend's band in Colorado Springs back in the late 90's.  Lots of fun at their shows, though they were short-lived.

01:53  Universal Order of Armageddon - Visible Distance

Episode 196 - Rebuilt C90

This mix is one I made for a friend in the late 90's.  In 2021, he found the sleeve but no cassette, and asked if I would help update it with a CDr copy.  I'm not sure what I was thinking for the theme, as its a lot of double songs from artists, then several with only one track, and a couple of the double tracks split up.  I know there is at least one song missing, and due to my illegible handwriting I can't figure out what it was.  I replaced the Joy Division tracks with the more raw versions from "remains" which wasn't released until 2001.  Anyway, here it is in its preserved original glory, including the Blur song before it was sold as a commercial jingle everywhere and the rarity of Victory Boy (the band formed without me after my band dissolved) and some super rare punk tracks from back in the day.
