360 Metal Covers

I've always been a metalhead at heart.  Might not be the genre I listen to the most, but what I do still put on, I am passionate about.  Continuing my string of covers mixes, here is a solid set of metal covers full of unique takes on some well known tunes.  Starting it off right with The Iron Maidens doing an Iron Maiden cover of Wasted Years.   Dr Know (not the one from Bad Brains) covering Metallica, from what I consider their last great album, And Justice for All is their transitional album, and everything Black album and beyond is absolute rubbish.   This might be the only song I have from Gruesome, I should check out more based on how well they did Slayer.  Zu is such a bonkers all over the place avant garde band, it really wasn't much of a surprise that they did a Residents cover.  Cult of Luna does Joy Division right, my #1 favorite post-metal act and I fully endorse seeing them for their spectacular lighting display, done by Alexis Sevenier.  The Voivod track is one I loved as a teenager and helped me understand that Pink Floyd was so much more than "Dark Side of the Moon" and "The Wall."

Pulled this excellent Fantomas track from "The Directors Cut" which is a covers album of film music and probably my favorite Mike Patton effort.  I selected this early cut of Fudge Tunnel doing a Cream cover, probably because I've used their Black Sabbath cover already.  Helmet covering Bjork is worth tracking down the MOM (Music for Mother Earth) compilations, and there is a wonderful song by the Butthole Surfers on there as well though the rest of the comps aren't that great.  The Band Isis (sad they had to change and clarify their name) did this fabulous Godflesh cover on one of their first EPs and it sits next to their Black Sabbath cover, which is equally amazing.  Napalm Death from Virus 100, the 100th release from Alternative Tentacles label and you can tell they were just made to cover this track; also check the Sepultura track from that same comp, actually almost every track is worth your time there.  Slayer and Ice-T team up to cover the Exploited on the "Judgement Night" soundtrack, that's such an epic album with rap and rock/metal pairings, I still come back to it often.  Then maybe not quite so metal is Motorhead covering my favorite Stone's song, and yeah Lemmy does it proper.  I really like the passion Rob Halford puts into his Dio impression on this classic track from Rainbow.  Great song, and for a radically different approach check out my His Name Is Alive posts, they did this one too.

359 Punk Covers

More from diving into my big folder of favorite cover songs.  This is a punky, noisy mix with some absolute winners.  This is such a wonderful opener from Asobi Seksu, and there exists an even better acoustic live version of this cover.  Nirvana comes to us via the 14 songs for Greg Sage and the Wipers, which was a shock to the system and eye opener when I bought that tribute; exposed to so many great songs and artists - another is included later in this mix.  A Place To Bury Strangers covering the Prids is just perfection.  This is how I learned of the Prids, and they quickly became a favorite band.  Their whole tribute albums is pretty solid, even has a rare appearance from the Wendys.  Tying into Skywave, they were the mother group that split into A Place to Bury Strangers and Ceremony, this tribute album also features the Prids, kinda goes full circle there.  Then we get to the fantastic Lush cover of Wire, a perfect match up in my opinion.  I think they also covered "Outdoor Miner" as a B-Side somewhere.  Not so rare, the Pixies covering Jesus and Mary Chain from their Trompe Le Monde album.  I've always thought this was a fan service between bands, since it was released the same year as the original (or pretty close).  A rare and good cover of Stereolab, which I always thought was a challenge.  Stereolab and Fuzagi are two bands I think its a daunting challenge to cover.

Crackerbash is a flash in the pan, still one of my favorite bands, and I was shocked to find this Spinanes cover, and even more shocked that it was good.  The Dinosaur Jr cover of the Cure is a classic, I think any fan of either band should already be aware of this amazing version.  I got several friends into Dinosaur Jr because of this track.  The Rapture's cover of Psychedelic Furs is a bit out of character for them, from my limited knowledge of their work.  This is a solid 7" on Gold Standard Laboratories, which is how I found them.  My whole family are fans of The Gaslight Anthem, and their cover of Tom Petty is a lot of fun, my second favorite Tom cover behind seeing The Black Heart Procession live when they played "You Got Lucky."   Asobi Seksu's second appearance on this mix, from the split EP where she and Boris cover each other's songs to great acclaim.  Then the first of two Face to Face appearances, this time covering Joy Division in their own style which I like - I did edit the intro where they attempt to do the original style and admit it isn't working for them.  My punk friend Joe brought the Living End to my attention with this song, knowing I liked the Cure.

I really like how Moby wears his punk roots on his sleeve with a great cover like this one.  Here are the second Crackerbash and Greg Sage appearances, and this medley is in my opinion better than the original tracks.  Following that with a classic from 7 Seconds, yes they can both Rock and Walk together with tracks like this.  Sublime, before they really blew up released this excellent Bad Religion cover on their 40 oz to Freedom album.  I like this side of their music more than the ska punk style on the rest of that album, and before their top 40 college radio friendly style of music. Still respect for them and my kids love their music too.  The Stitches was like the quintessential album for my friend group in high school.  I think we each had a difference cover of the 8x12 LP.  Face to Face again, and a Fugazi cover?  As I said before this is a challenge but I think they did it justice.  Ending it all with a Blitz cover by The Bruisers, which some may notice as the singer for the Dropkick Murphys' first band.

00:00  Asobi Seksu - Never Understand (The Jesus and Mary Chain)
02:28  Nirvana - Return of the Rat (The Wipers)
05:31  A Place to Bury Strangers - The Problem (The Prids)
07:43  Static Daydream - Weat This Dress (Skywave)
10:32  Lush - Mannequin (Wire)
12:54  Pixies - Head On (The Jesus and Mary Chain)
15:03  Trona - Wow and Flutter (Stereolab)
18:21  The Spinanes - Bad Karma (Crackerbash)

357 Bruce Covered

I'm a big fan of Bruce Springsteen.  Not really a guilty pleasure, I'm outright loving his music.  He really is the Boss, no doubt about it. This is a mix of some wonderfully done covers spanning his career.  I used "I'm On Fire" and "Thunder Road" twice, only because both versions are excellent.  Great songs and great respect to the songwriter on display here.  Khayem had a great post with plenty of covers of "I'm On Fire" at their site recently - must be something in the air having us working on Bruce Springsteen posts at nearly the same time.

356a Psychic TV mix 1

I am only an intermittent Psychic TV listener.  Their first couple albums were favorites, and I did pick up a few live albums on vinyl from Wax Trax, but those were sometimes dodgy quality or just a cacophony that didn't always translate to repeat listenings.  Then in the early 90's I got the Jack The Tab/Infinite Beat era which was very novel in the dawning of the rave culture.  Later on I found solace with the more ambient and meditative/ritual music of theirs.  In hindsight, its the comps like Hex Sex that I really listen to the most often.  Still, a prolific and powerful band that truly is a cultural icon for their music and antics (on and off stage).  Here are two mixes of my favorite tracks.

00:00  Godstar
03:28  Roman P (Fireball mix)
08:49  Only Love Can Break Your Heart

354 Oldies

My parents raised me on oldies.  Even as a teenager, sometimes I preferred to keep on the AM oldies stations while I drove around.  There were just so many catchy and singalong type of songs that get stuck in your head.  I still hum these melodies while doing housework and get excited when modern movies still use classics like these.  Maybe it was those John Waters films, or Stand By Me, Back to the Future or any other movie set in the 50's.

353 Iron Maiden Deep Cuts

I love the recognizable hits from Iron Maiden, the ones everyone can sing along to.  So much that I rarely listen to the rest of their albums, aside from "Powerslave" and "Number of the Beast."   Decided to actually listen start to finish to most of their albums and picked some deep cuts that are nearly as strong as their hits.  Ok, yeah I threw in "Fear of the Dark" in the mix, but its one I rarely listen to and honestly wasn't on their greatest hits album "Ed Hunter."

352 Rap Classics

Many of these tracks came up while discussing the history of Hip Hop with my daughters.  I joked that it was so bizarre that my mother let me keep Run D.M.C's "Raising Hell" and the soundtrack to "Juice" but objected to the Dead Milkmen's "Beelzebubba" and thought Prince's "Purple Rain" was too mature (I mean look at that inlay photo!).

And a shout out to NPR for hosting Cypress Hill on Tiny Desk Concerts recently.

350d Ryan Moore's Other Appearances

More of the same from the third mix. Niels van Hoorn was a fellow member of the Dots during Ryan's tenure, nice to see then guesting on each other's solo ventures.  The Dub Project is another Ryan Moore project, similar yet darker than Twilight Circus, and has several guest appearances by artists he'd later do work on M Records with.  cEvin Key's solo works also feature a slew of guests, this one with Ryan and Edward from the Pink Dots.  Then another track from the DJ Spooky collaboration albums, followed by The Tear Garden which is the supergroup of Pink Dots and Skinny Puppy.  This track selected from their most accessible album, "Crystal Mass."  This appearance of Strange Attractor features Ryan as a guest musician instead of my previous example as a remixer.  Martijn De Kleer is another peer from the Pink Dots.  Next is the Mort Aux Vaches appearance of Muslimgauze, and the credits cite Ryan Moore as a percussionist.  I really have no idea if he is playing on this track, or which of the others, so I selected one that fit my needs here.  I chose the "Elefant's Graveyard" because I neglected to use it on my previous overviews of the Dot's work and it is a great deep cut track.  Then in an almost reunion, Ryan and Edward put out an album together, though credited to each of their individual name's.  Artwork was featured on the LPD album "Collaboris," and I believe Ryan plays guitar on this one.  Lastly is the guest spots for Dark Star, which I will be honest hasn't aged well and sounds a bit dated.

00:00  Niels van Hoorn - Mellow
02:59  The Dub Project - Joy

350C Ryan Moore - Features and Remixes

Ryan only did a handful of remixes for other artists, and I believe I have them all represented here.  The other tracks are side projects (like Dubcon with cEvin Key of Skinny Puppy), a few more from his M Records catalog (Michael Rose/Ranking Joe), his appearances with DVOA/Hilt/Gaudi.  Even as a session player, you can always recognize his presence.  Those first two Strange Attractor records are a lot of fun with plenty of guest appearances by Pink Dots.  Dubcon albums are everything I'd hoped for in a Skinny Puppy/Twilight Circus jam session.  The MBM remix works better than I'd expected, hard to remix such a phenominal outing as Storm The Studio.  Honestly, I might be letting my music sobbery bleed through here, its the Systemwide remix album that I'm a little disappointed in.  In my opinion, it really sounds like someone used a rudimentary time stretch tool to try and beat sync all these random remixes together into a coninuously mixed whole, and it doesn't sound great.  I hope the original of this remix exists somewhere and it gets released because this could be a very strong track - its that digitally-wobbly bassline that bugs me and does not sound like something Ryan would've done on his own.  The next track from Nirgillis really hits its dub stride about 1/3 through the track; a mixed bag in my opinion.  Onwards, the DVOA track is just fantastic, this is somewhat of an anomaly as they are traditionally dark ambient and make very sparce use of percussion.  Hilt is so much more than another Skinny Puppy side project, this track I was introduced to by an ex and we'd listen to this EP nearly every time we hung out.

350a Ryan Moore - Twilight Circus Early Years

Happy New Year!

Here is another of my favorite bassists (having already gone into great depths covering Bill Laswell and my last post on Al Cisneros).  I first came across Ryan Moore as a member of the Legendary Pink Dots.  It was a real highlight for me to see his solo set as Twilight Circus open on one tour of the Dots.  I love his roots meets modern style of dub production, which can also be felt in many of his contributions to the Dots' discography.  He was also a core member of the Tear Garden which is a massive credit on anyone's resume.  Ryan is also a session musician, appearing on albums by Hilt, Single Gun Theory, Lava Hay, Final Cut, DNA Le Draw D-Kee, Brain Box, Dark Star, Edward Ka-Spel solo albums, Dead Voices on Air, and the Mort Aux Vaches appearance of Muslimgauze as a percussionist (Wow!).  Then there are his productions for Mykal/Michael Rose, Ranking Joe and a long list of elite reggae artists.  I'll get into all of that in subsequent mixes.

I've broken this down into five distinct mixes starting with my favorite, his instrumental dub period.  This mix contains one track from each of his albums/singles that I have to show the evolution of his style over time.  There are a couple dubplates/test pressings in my collection that I just didn't take the time to rip for this effort, I'm sure those will show up in some shape or form soon enough.  I realize I included "Slicer Dub Plate" on here twice, however these are vastly different mixes, similar to my inclusion of "Session" and "Session Dub (remix)."

Shout out to NØ's blog, they've offered a fine selection of his tunes as well.  I'm always happy to see an artist well loved and well represented to share the joy of their creation.

This is some of my favorite and the most revisited music in my collection.
