313a Horror Ambient

Horror, Giallo, spooky film scores and some tracks pulled from a mix that sounds like it could've been a horror film score from the always incredible Dream Weapons.  Some of these were pulled from the superb mixes at Nate Ashley's site.  The rest I have spent countless hours tracking down the soundtracks and film scores because I just love this style so much.   Due to the length, and how much material I had to sort through, this mix took me the longest to put together.  Time well spent in my opinion.

The Unseen, The Heartwood Institute and Catharsis are not from soundtracks but sound like they should be (denoted by *).  The First Bruno Nicolai track on here was listed as part of the "Virgin Among the Living Dead" soundtrack which I have and can confirm this is not on my copy, though it definitely sounds like the right composer.  The Francois de Roubaix "Beach Burial" I cannot confirm which film its from, sounds so familiar but I can't nail it down.

I have not seen all of these films, but have enjoyed more than half.  The rest I found because of the composer or were included in aforementioned mixes.

Sit back and enjoy this near 2 hour mix of the greatest sounds from the horror genre.  The Spotify mix has some of these tracks and some from the next post, because not all of this is available on that platform.

01:12  Charles Bernstein - Prologue (A Nightmare on Elm Street)

345 Spells of The Old Ways

Witchcraft/Wicca and Pagan influenced music.  Included two radically different versions of Tam Lin and several, maybe too many, Wicker Man references.  The Andrew Liles track might have been included by mistake, I was compiling these tracks at the same time as my overview of his works, and pretty sure my drag and drop ended in the wrong folder.  Still it fits pretty well here.  All the Agalloch tracks are short edits where all I wanted to include were the samples.  Of course I had to start this off with the greatest Halloween themed breaks record ever from Tino Corp.  That is required listening every October.

00:00  Tino Corp - Spells
00:38  Current 93 feat Ian Reed - Benediction
02:26  Andrew Liles - An Unkempt Garden or the Cod Cape

96 - Dark Storytelling

Kicking off the two weeks leading up to the best holiday, Halloween or Samhain, or whatever you celebrate at this time of the year.  I love the spookiness this season brings and have been introducing my older daughter to some horror movie essentials.

The mix below is one I made around 15 years back.  A friend of mine commented that they enjoyed the really creepy music I listened to as it was so different from their normal punk taste.  I made this mix for them, which they said they listened to once and realized it wasn't for everyday consumption.

Good mix of spoken word with dark atmospherics on this mix, and I tried to split up the stories with some music in-between.  Ending with my favorite, "I Have a Special Plan For This World."  That's easily the creepiest in my collection.

00:00  John Contreras & Rose McDowall - Afraid 2 (Nico)
03:09  Current 93 with Thomas Ligotti - This Degenerate Little Town (Alternate)

327 My 21st Birthday

Many moons ago, I turned 21, and no it isn't today.

Unlike the majority of Americans, I did not spend the evening at a bar doing shots and not remembering the evening.  I did that on the next day.   Instead, for my birthday I attended an intimate performance at the Pike's Peak Center for the Performing Arts with the DaVinci Quartet.   They performed the below three pieces which are simply beautiful.  Highlights my quirkiness even as a young man attending punk and industrial concerts and blasting metal every time I got in my car, I was also a season ticket holder for the symphony, took my dates to the opera and ballet, and spent at least a day every month at a museum surrounding myself in the master works of days past.

Haydn - Quartet Op. 20, No. 5 in F Minor
Loeffler - Music for Four Stringed Instruments
Dvorak - String Quartet in A Flat Major, Op. 105

No download or spotify, so just enjoy the youtube videos on this one.

322 Old School Death Metal mix666

Closing out the six days of death metal.  And for this it lines up with my taking my daughter and her friends to the Taylor Swift concert film tonight.  They're getting all dressed up and trading bracelets.  I didn't want to be left out, but had to find something appropriate to wear... and a quick google search for "Black Metal Taylor Swift" shows that it is a thing, and there are lots of options such as this mix's image.   My daughter gave me a hard no on ordering that shirt, and we compromised on the Swift/Slayer logo mash-up shirt below.  You can tell why I had to get through all this metal this week, to balance out the pop mania I'll experience tonight.  Never fear, a palate cleanser is coming next.

322 Old School Death Metal mix1

Here comes the onslaught, six days of old school death metal.  Despite all my other musical tastes, metal is the one I can most relate to others with.  Most of my close friends are all metal heads in one shape or another.  Sure, we all differ on which sub-genre we most align with.  For me, its late 80's death metal.  This felt so taboo when I was a teenager and heard just a peek of these bands on MTV's Headbanger's Ball.  The violent graphics and explicit lyrics labels only made it that much more alluring.  Across these six mixes, all the big names appear.  I'm sure I missed some obvious choices, however I stuck with what I listen to the most and threw a few curveballs in for sure.  Yes, a bit loose on occasion as I don't care to debate sub-genres, some thrash, crossover, post-hardcore, etc.   Also, expect varying levels of sound quality as some of these are from my original vinyl copies and others are remastered.

00:00  Exodus - Bonded by Blood
03:34  Entombed - Left Hand Path

320 - Years of love have been forgot, In the hatred of a minute

A slew of bands that sound like they're perfect sitting aside Jesus & Mary Chain, Cocteau Twins (Garlands), The Cure (Pornography), Echo & The Bunnymen (Do it Clean) etc.  Only difference is they're 30+ years after this wave of noisy post-punk swept the world's unexpecting ears.  This retro sound is both an homage and a fresh take pushing it past its previous incarnation.  The Edgar Allan Poe quote felt right for the name of this one.

Yes, my numbering system is getting a little out of whack.  I grouped all the "top" mixes together, and have held back a few that I'll publish later this month as a combined theme.

00:00  A Place To Bury Strangers - I Know I'll See You

342 Top Compilations

Top compilations now to close out this "best of" set of mixes.  These are so good I had a very hard time selecting just one track to represent the whole.  The first selection is from the "Red Hot" series, this one a bit of an homage to Beatniks and their lifestyle, I think, and its an AIDS benefit.  Way too many great artists to list on this, and a couple highlights are the ambient stylings of My Bloody Valentine, several interludes from Skylab and Christian McBride, a wacky track from Meat Beat (featured here), and ending the album with Moby performing "republican party" which is just a baby crying and people laughing - quite the powerful message.  Moving on to "Macro Dub Infection Vol 1" presented by Kevin Martin "The Bug."  This was not traditional roots dub from Jamacia, but a great overview of many interpretations of that style by electronic artists.  I believe most of the tracks are exclusive, and they are all great.  I probably picked the least representative track here, though its such a good remix I couldn't pass it up and I'm pretty sure I've featured several other tracks in previous mixes.  The two compilations "Paradigm Shift" and "Wild Planet" showcase Skinny Puppy in all their guises and some close friends' projects.  Both are great, but Paradigm Shift wins as the best of the two because of the exclusive Tear Garden tracks.

I remember Jhon Balance (Geoff Rushton) having very public struggles with alcoholism amongst all the other drugs, and "Foxtrot" was released to help raise money for his rehabilitation.  Yeah, in hindsight I should have known that any proceeds would've gone to his habits not his help, but I remained an oblivious teenager and felt I was being supportive.  This compilation has some great material from everyone involved, and I think one of the first solo tracks from Sleazy.  I remember special ordering "Friespiel" from a local record store and the clerk gave me a hard time saying she'd only hand over the CD if I could pronounce the name.  A Faust remix album could have gone so very wrong, but this works well.  High caliber remixers and I know I've featured the excellent Dead Voices on Air remix here previously, and thus went with the surprising Residents remix.  I still break this out and enjoy every track, nothing is generic or expected and the style changes completely from track to track.

Next up is the Cold Meat Industry sampler "The Absolute Supper."  I mentioned this in my last post with In Slaughter Natives being the big call out.  I chose The Protagonist as the representative track here, who I liken to the aforementioned band but a bit more subdued.  This compilation was how I got into Raison D'Etre, Mz.412, and Brighter Death Now, and many other dark ambient artists on the label roster.  Sure its not for everyone, but when the mood hits there is nothing else quite like the Cold Meat Industry catalog.  This is followed by the "Interiors" compilation on Sentrax label.  There are a lot of aliases on this albums artist list, but all should be well known in the industrial and dark music realms.  John Everall appears in a few places which is to be expected since its his label.  Supposedly this was to introduce these artists that were eventually releasing music on Sentrex, which obviously didn't happen.

Moving towards more accessible music I suppose, I chose "A Tribute to Spacemen 3" for the next offering.  Solid slate of modern psychedelic and alternative bands here paying homage to the greats.  This is probably where I first heard Bowery Electric and Arab Strap.  The Accelera Deck track is a mystery to me, this sounds nothing like the electronic/glitchy group that I had on vinyl, and at the time was a cover of a Spacemen 3 song I'd never heard.  The next selection comes from the absolutely required listening of the Volume series of compilations from the 90s.  I loved those so much with their books of liner notes and heavy handed selections of exclusive material.  "Wasted" pulls together some of the best bits, given that most volumes of "Volume" have some material I didn't care for as much.  This best of the best was nearly all bangers, and though it continued the very diverse slate of artists it actually works very well as a whole.  This unique track from Orbital took one of their early pieces, slightly edited and reworked it, then added vocals.  I found a couple edits online that trim the fat and make this more of a electronic pop song that fits better in short mixes.  On a related note, the next selection is from "Trance Europe Express vol 1," which was produced by the same team as the Volume/Wasted compilations.  This was so fresh to my ears in the early 90s when it came out, and features some of the best tracks from the artists included and in my opinion it still holds up 30 years later.  I've already included several tracks in other mixes, so I went with the one I know I hadn't used before;  Billie Ray Martin and Spooky doing a cover of Throbbing Gristle.  This version is nice and chill and ambient, but if you like it seek out the single which has several more beat oriented versions that don't disappoint.

The next compilation I chose is "Whore: Various Artists Play Wire."  I'd been a rabid fan of Pink Flag for a few years, and just couldn't get my punk friends to give them a chance (they all eventually came around).  I was elated when I saw this tribute album come out, as I loved more than half the groups featured on it.  I knew some of the artists were aliases, and liked it even more when I deciphered those bands' members.  The track from Petty Tyrants is actually a Skinny Puppy/Ministry offshoot.  Lush, Godflesh, My Bloody Valentine, aMiniature, Bark Psychosis, Laika, Polar Bear, Main, Mike Watt... seriously so many great covers here but what would you expect from a tribute to the great Wire.  Lastly, I end this mix with some neo-folk from "The Pact...Of The Gods."  Likely came across this when I was chasing down compilations that featured Der Blutharsch.  I found so much more than I anticipated with this release, and Forseti was one of the big highlights.  I really liked the Pagan folk of Changes (a good side note their collaboration with black metal outfit Cadaverous Conditions is quite a treat) and found many artists to investigate further from this album, and its companion "The Pact: Flying in the Face."
