567 The Remix According to 4Hero

4 Hero certainly have cemented their place in electronic music history, through their influence on Drum and Bass and Broken Beat genres.  They have matured over the years and deliver consistently great material at every twist and turn.  I was never a fan of "Mr. Kirk" which I suppose was their breakout single.  It wasn't until I heard "The Paranormal in 4 Forms" on the Macro Dub Infection compilation that I really got into their music.  They have released a tremendous number of remixes, and I selected a small list of my favorites here.  Mostly just what I had in my collection as the basis.

00:00  Talvin Singh - Traveller (4 Hero's Dollis Hill Futebol Mix)
06:03  Innerzone Orchestra - Bug in the Bassbin (4 Hero mix)
12:06  Sonz of a Loop Da Loop Era & The Scratchadelic Experience - Peace & Loveism (4 Hero Remix)
16:49  Goldie - Inner City Life (4 Hero Pt 1)
25:06  DJ Krush - Meiso (The 4 Luscious mix)
29:37  Bill Laswell & Jah Wobble - Orion (Dollis Dub mix)

566 The Remix According to Solex

Solex is the laptoptronica pop project of record shop owner Elisabeth Esselink.  Utilizing the records in her own record store, she assembled her music on an antique 8-track recorder, singing original lyrics over her musical creations.  Several fun albums were released, and just this handful of remixes.  Solex was also one of the artists that participated in the "In the Fishtank" series of improvisations.

This is a short one, though it is a lot of fun.

00:00  Malaria! - Your Turn To Run (Solex Remix)
03:27  Shinju Gumi - Senor Gumi (Solex Remix)
06:16  Twilight Circus Dub Sound System - Kik (Solex 'Kiks for Niks' Remix)
09:49  Rollercoaster 23 - Portatone ('Porta's & s' Remix by Solex featuring Sawman)

23:48  At The Close of Every Day - The Maria Tales (Solex)
26:38  Ruby - Beefheart (Solex remix)

I am missing these two remixed tracks, so if anyone can help please drop me a link.
The Little Rabbits - Pic Nic Boy
Blues Explosion - Crunchy

565 The Remix According to Zion Train

Zion Train are a reggae dance group that blends styles to something their own.  Founding member Neil Perch taught himself production and composition after completing a masters in biochemistry.  The band ran their own label Universal Egg as a way to release their own music, but quickly expanded to other like minded and sounding artists.

Yes there is an existing playlist from Future Vintage for Zion Train, however mine has some tracks not shared there.

564 The Remix According to Eat Static

Eat Static is so much more than ex-members of Ozric Tentacles, though that is quite a credential on one's resume.  Merv and Joie stated that they took their name from Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, which is pretty cool in my book.  Despite having a pretty clear style for their original music, these remixes really do showcase their diversity and strength manipulating the source material.

00:00  John Buzon Trio - Caravan
05:43  Charlie Watts Jim Keltner Project - Airto
11:08  Suns of Arqa feat John Cooper Clarke - The Truth Lies Therein (remix)

563 Spring Heel Jack - Oddities Vol 2

One of my favorite drum and bass turned free jazz artists.  I was quite into raves for a spell, and "68 Million Shades..." was my usual road trip music heading up and back from events.  That one, and the "Everything But The Girl vs Drum and Bass EP."  SHJ really had an evolution with "Treader" then "Disappeared", so it wasn't THAT out of place when the free jazz album "Masses" was released as part of the Blue Series with Matthew Shipp; actually that whole series is incredible.  I suppose it isn't that far fetched that they hop genres as Ashley Wales did start in the post punk band Five or Six.

It took me a while to track it down in a local shop, though I did eventually acquire a copy of "Oddities" which bridges the gap between their DnB and Free Jazz with a set of experimental and ambient tracks that are just wonderful.

Here we are 25 years later, and I felt I needed to pull together the remaining missing pieces into this "Oddities Vol 2."   Remixes, comp tracks, and a real highlight for me is the progression of Galapagos, which started as a remix of Tortoise and ended somewhere very different.

1  SHJ - Sweep
2  SHJ - A Permanent Theme
3  SHJ - Double Edge Dub
4  Outernational Meltdown - Hungry on Arrival (remix)
5  Statik Sound System - Revolutionary Pilot (Slow Dub)
6  Ben Neill - Tunnel Vision (Holland Tunnel mix)
7  Techno Animal - Heavy Water (re-mix)
8  Joi - Everybody Say Yeah (remix)
9  Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded (dub)
10  Tortoise - Galapagos Version 1 (remix)
11  SHJ - Galapagos II
12  SHJ - Galapagos III
13  Alexis Taylor - Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue (Hackney Rd Dub)

553 El-P

El-Producto, aka Jaime Stuart Meline has been an unrelenting force in rap music for three decades.  I remember getting "Funcrusher Plus" when it came out and being instantly hooked, especially the DJ Premiere remix of "8 Steps to Perfection."  El-P's production work is no joke either, Cannibal Ox made me take notice of that.  Throughout the years my favorite of his works were his guest appearances, many of which are included here along with some productions and remixes.  His career was all leading up to Run The Jewels, which is a like a late career megaton bomb.  Amazing and shows he still has a lot of gas left in the tank.

551 The Remix According to Skylab

Took forever to do this one, due mostly to having so many remixes that I just didn't like.  Weeding through those showcased the style that I did like from them.  That style being the 94-96 period with Howie B as a member.   Those early tracks like "Seashell," "Next," and "Twister" brought a smile to my face.  Their work on "Offbeat - A Red Hot Sound Trip" was something really special, like the collaboration with My Bloody Valentine at their peak.  I picked up their single for "The Trip" and was very disappointed, never bought any future releases from them.  In my opinion, this shows the impact one member of a group can have.  I suppose it always was Mat Ducasse's group, and most of these remixes are from the post-Howie B era.

00:00  Skylab vs Deluxe - Twister
05:00  My Bloody Valentine meets Skylab - Incidental Peace

546 Lushed

A wonderful track from Orbital with some classic remixes, and here 32 years after its release I'm still coming back to it time and time again.   What I've done for this mix is include those originals (1-3) and era remixes (3-5, 7, 13) along with bootleg (9-10) and disguised remixes (6, 8, 12, 14) from peers and modern artists.  I read that Vapourspace created four remixes, and only as of recently two of them have been released.  Hopeful the remaining tracks will see the light of day sometime.  Despite this being 14 versions of the same track, there is plenty of depth and variety making it an engaging listen all the way through.

529 The Remix According to James Plotkin

I was first introduced to James Plotkin through the band Old, then was enamored with his solo album The Joy of Disease.  His collaborations with Mick Harris and Mark Spybey really solidified my appreciation of his artistry.  I have checked into some of his work with Aaron Turner in Jodis and Lotus Eaters which is wonderful ambient music from them, and of course Khanate is incredible.  Otherwise, I really need to seek out more of his works and productions as I've been impressed by everything I have so far.

Here is a collection of the remixes I was able to track down and they're all over the map.  Diversity in his approach for sure.

527 Several longform freakouts

I'd collected these tracks over the last few years and though they are great they didn't fit in on previous mixes, mostly due to their length.  So here they are making one long mix of Krautrock style jams, both new and old.

500a Its Moozler Time!

Despite my wonky numbering system, this is my 500th mix here and to celebrate that milestone I figured it was time I veered from the standard for just a short while.

Once upon a time I was pretty active in creating music.  Raised as a classical guitarist, then playing in an alternative rock band in the mid-90s, a punk band in the late 90s, finally re-focusing on electronic and noise based music with my guitar based midi converter, 303, and rudimentary 2 second sampler I attacked my imagination with ferocity.

I released one official album, one semi-official EP, two tracks on film scores, one college project, one tribute album, two tracks on other tribute albums, and the rest is all bedroom recordings on my 4-track Tascam.  I made several cassettes for friends, and traded a lot of CD-R's online with other musicians. Found a few collaboration opportunities, several artists to remix, and had a lot of fun making a racket and stretching the possibilities of what I thought I could create.

The music in these three mixes is pretty much what you'd expected based on the mixes I've shared.   Best I can compare it to is maybe early His Name Is Alive experiments, Seefeel, Plateau & Download, Tyranny for You era Front242, Nurse With Wound, Pascal Comelade, Faust, Severed Heads, breaks like DJ Shadow, grooves like DJ Wally, and perhaps early industrial like SPK.

Always unique and sometimes painful.  20+ years on I still genuinely like this stuff and wish I'd put more effort into production value and mastering.  Armed with a stack of 100's of vintage sci-fi and El Santo movies, I sampled everything from V/VM, Muslimgauze, Crash Worship and Scorn to the Sundays, Lush and Kimya Dawson; and whatever I could find in-between.  Plus I was nefarious and would hide tape recorders in my car and house when friends came over for drinks.  Everything was fair game.

Here I present three new selections of tracks, unmixed so the listener can pick and choose what the want to hear.  These supplement the five albums I have available on bandcamp.

First up is a collection of remixes.  This is where I had the most fun.  I was a site admin for a mp3 sharing site focused on independent musicians.  Many of them reached out asking for a remix of one of their tracks and I happily obliged.  Struck up a friendship with a few artists that continue today.  This complements the album "Not What You Hoped For."

493C Current 93 Remixes, Remixed and Covered

This one is a wild ride, but aren't they all?  I pulled together the worthwhile remixes and covers I could find, some fan made, others officially released.  The opening track is probably as close to a David Tibet remix as will appear, its the original track with some added effects and noise so it counts.  I tried to limit the tracks pulled from the only official tribute album "The Bells Shall Sound Forever."  The tracks that sampled C93 are appropriately labeled, though shouldn't be too difficult to find that source material used in them.  The Matmos remix is on probably the only official remix EP for C93, and its all good stuff especially if you are a JG Thirwell fan.  There's a couple fan made mash-ups, however I think they work pretty well.  The one with Bomb the Bass I've had for years and remember I had some online chats with the artist that was responsible for it, sorry for the low bitrate on that one.  The massive remix box set from Andrew Liles is here with the shortest track on it, which is representative of the larger picture for those interested.  Of course I ended it with the powerful cover by Rotting Christ.

00:00  Starland Vocal Band - Afternoon Delight (from FACT mix with some added effects)

491 The Remix According to u-Ziq part 1

Welcome 2025, I wanted to start with something fun that I didn't finish last year.  I had a very ambitious April and covered roughly 30 artists and their remix output.  One I neglected was µ-Ziq aka Mike Paradinas.  I first came across his work on The Autures vs µ-Ziq cd I picked up at Life By Design in Colorado Springs (God I miss that store).  Next I was thoroughly impressed with his remix of "On" by Aphex Twin, with that lovely intro where his metal tape got eaten a little and yet he still included it.  I've previously included some of his output and some of his projects like Mike & Rich or Slag Boom Van Loon in other mixes here.  While researching that remix series I found that I have a folder with 70+ of his remixes, so naturally it took me a while to distill these down to these two mixes of my favorites.  This first mix was easy as these are the tracks I knew best and have loved on them for many years.

481 Roots Manuva Guest Spots

Roots Manuva aka Rodney Smith is a name I'd heard and seen everywhere but took a while before diving into his catalog.  I think it was the Pharoahe Monch track that first drew my attention, and then I was excited to hear his dub album "Dub come save me."  Of course, the collab track with Jurassic 5 really stood out, and a guest spot with Massive Attack doesn't hurt one's street cred.  Yeah, pretty much every artist on this mix is quite an honor to work with, so Roots Manuva is certainly doing something right.
