Funk is alive and well with these modern artists.  Lots of groove and fun to be had in this mix.  In 2018 I had just found out about the Daptone record label through an enticing review of "Burnt Offerings" from the Budos Band, and dove in deep.  Of course I had to throw in a few all time classics to round this out.

I thought how Derniere Volonte are coined as Martial Pop is very descriptive.  This focuses on that grey area of neofolk, martial, dark almost industrial music.  This can be a divisive genre, and I only enjoy bits and pieces.  Still, a fun mix to make with some of my favorites in the style.

Episode 69 - Classic Rocks mix 1

In my opinion, a good classic rock mix is essential to any road trip.  Something everyone will know every song and can sing along.  It helps the time go by faster and more enjoyably.  I was partly inspired by all the great classics included in the Supernatural TV show soundtrack, but went well beyond that to include some personal favorites.  I am aware this is out of sequence with my numbering convention, I had delayed its publication because its so much more of a straightforward mix that is contrast to what I usually share, but I do listen to this a lot while driving so figured, what the heck!

Episode 85 - Dark Electronica

A darker/noisier themed mix, while still very accessible.  The Bomb the Bass track would be right at home on any Meat Beat 90's era album.  This Scorn track is probably my favorite from their early period, making excellent use of a Residents' Vileness Fats sample.  Elvis Costello?  Sure, I think it fits the vibe all too well. The residents doing what they do best, I wish they'd played this when I saw them love, but they did "Six More Miles to the Graveyard" which was quite a pleasure.  Next up is some tape loop madness courtesy of Severed Heads, which I was lucky enough to pick up in the dollar bin at a local record store - they didn't know what they had, such as the other 1$ purchase of the VG+ original pressing of 20 Jazz Funk Greats.  Moving along in the mix to some more modern laptoptronica, noise rock, industrial classic, and a darker piece from On-U family. Ending with my favorite of the V/VM relations making a classic into nearly intolerable noise.

Episode 81 - Paul's Influence

Back in the early 90's I had a good friend named Paul.  He and I would spend hours challenging each other with music that we found unique and trying to find stuff the other one had not heard yet.  This mix compiles many of these songs that even to this day I cannot hear without thinking of him and those days in his basement, smoking his parent's Kool cigarettes and stealing beers from the fridge hoping no one would notice.  Sure, the genres are all over the map, but that's how we liked it back then. Most of these are from the days before songs were heavily compressed and mastered to be very loud, so expect some drops and peaks in the mix.

Episode 71 - That Alone is the Pursuit of Life

A style olio.   Variety is the spice of life, I've heard.  This journey is cohesive enough to bring much joy on a day like this.  Starting with some exotica that everyone should recognize, then touring the middle east and back through Europe before hitting a beatnik inspired toon from a crooner.  Transitioning into my favorite Sugarcubes song, enhanced by the Reid brothers to great effect.  Then alternative rock country with a great take on My Bloody Valentine, followed by some interesting and appealing electronica and remixes.  Then Tori doing a classic 80's tune in her inimitable style, and ending with some of the Velvets doing a more country styled version and another of those great Bjork covers by a fellow Icelander.  Lots to digest and all worth the price of admission.

Episode 70 - Nový Svět - pt1 Stupefacente!

I fell in love with Novy Svet the first time I heard them, and again with every subsequent release I came across.  They came across my path via CDr swapping over two decades ago, and I had requested some rarities (aren't they all) from the group Mirror, and I recieved a handful of EPs and an album or two from Novy Svet.  While nothing like Mirror, I just knew I was on to something completely unique. 

As their Discog's profile correctly states, "The group is neither tied to any musical style nor to any language."  

The industrial, cabaret, neofolk, ambient, absolutely bonkers music was so refreshing to me.  I spent countless hours and lots of money tracking down their releases.  I found such interesting labels like Old Europa Cafe, Klanggalerie, Hau Ruck, Achtung Baby!, Nekofutschata, Punch, Treue Um Treue/Reue Um Reue.  

The greatest is still their collaboration with martial pop artist Derniere Volonte (both sides of that 7" featured here).  I've included appearances by J. Weber (half of Novy Svet with Frl. Tost) in the groups Mushroom's Patience, Unidad Sasao and O Paradis.
