606 Its Kid606 time

The first decade or so of Miguel Manuel De Pedro aka Kid606's work was tremendously enlightening for me.  The squelchy, digital, fritzy anarchist punk attack at electronic music was so fresh and exciting to me.  I used to do DJ sets of all Tigerbeat6, Vinyl Communications, & Violent Turd artists back in the day, usually to the annoyance of my guests.  Here I've assembled a rather lengthy set of his early works that really stand out.  Mostly comps, aliases and rarities I believe; and a lot of fun for the patient listener.

Yeah, I'd been holding on to this one so I could release it as my 606th mix here.

566 The Remix According to Solex

Solex is the laptoptronica pop project of record shop owner Elisabeth Esselink.  Utilizing the records in her own record store, she assembled her music on an antique 8-track recorder, singing original lyrics over her musical creations.  Several fun albums were released, and just this handful of remixes.  Solex was also one of the artists that participated in the "In the Fishtank" series of improvisations.

This is a short one, though it is a lot of fun.

00:00  Malaria! - Your Turn To Run (Solex Remix)
03:27  Shinju Gumi - Senor Gumi (Solex Remix)
06:16  Twilight Circus Dub Sound System - Kik (Solex 'Kiks for Niks' Remix)

395 The Remix According To Matmos

The A-Team of Electronica, Matmos!  They are worthy of all the praise and hype.  No one else does the cut up sample based madness quite like they do.  I came across them initially via Tigerbeat6 and Kid606, then dove into their discography based on amusing and accurate song titles and themed albums.  Since the 90's I have followed their every twist and turn.  Their approach to a remix is very transformative, taking elements of the original and using them as instruments in their own creations.  You can tell what the source material is, but it is so far removed from what the original structure was.

I started this one out with their humor side, from the NWA tribute remix album "With Attitude" which features every associate of Kid606 that he could gather.  This isn't an NWA remix in any sense of the word, though it was a standout track on that compilation.  Next is my perennial cocktail hour music, Tipsy, and this one of many excellent tracks from their "Remix Party."  People Like Us is Vicki Bennett and she's the queen of plunderphonics and runs an excellent weekly podcast on WFMU called "Do or DIY."  This track was from a split 12" that never materialized, so thank the internet for getting these files out which are now readily available from Ubuweb or Archive.org.  Slag Boom Van Loon is a wonderful side project of Jochem Paap (Speedy J) and Mike Paradinas (u-Ziq).  Its as wonderful as you would expect, and the remix companion album is even better (Boards of Canada, Leafcutter John, Horse Opera, Four Tet, Pole, Coil and of course Matmos).  This Labradford track is from the Wire Tapper series, and takes a beautiful track of shimmering bliss and acoustic ambience and turns it into a glitch filled noisy wild ride.  I'll write up more about this track in a subsequent mix I already have planned on influential tracks in my life.  The Bjork, which of course I have to include because of their stint as parts of her entourage.  Instead of including tracks they contributed to, I went with the two on this mix to showcase their contributions and remix skills.  The Kid606 track I included here was the one that opened my eyes and ears to Matmos so many years ago.  Her Space Holiday is a group I only knew from a split EP with Bright Eyes.  The more I dig into their discography, the more I like them.

Next up is Current 93 (first of two appearances).  Of course I'm a lifetime admirer of David Tibet's work, and this remix EP split between Foetus and Matmos is quite the anomaly in their history - and it stands out because of that and how amazing each and every track is on it.  Liars, June of 44 and Erase Errata are all noisy, math rocking, punks which seem to appeal to Matmos as their remixes really shine with this kind of source material.  I'm particularly fond of the wordplay on the June of 44 track, which references Matmos' album "A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure."  Chiara String Quartet and Phoenecia are ones that I found only when researching this mix so not much to say on them.  Pluramon is another artist I found via Kid606, though not on his Tigerbeat6 label.  Slicker is a related glitchy artist, though more pop oriented, and fun anecdote, is the son of film maker John Hughes.

This mix is painful at points to get through, but therein lies the reward.  Hope you enjoyed the ride on this one.

00:00  Matmos - Great White Entertainers (NWA)
00:19  Tipsy - Schatzi a Go Go (remix)

12:52  Labradford - So (Matmos remix)
17:59  Bjork - Alarm Call (Rhythmic Phonetics mix)
23:15  Kid606 - Dropkick (Matmos Theme For A Biker Movie Starring Kid606)
28:42  Her Space Holiday - Tech Romance (Matmos Remix)
33:31  Current 93 - The Beautiful Dancing Dust (remixed by Matmos)
39:03  Liars - No.1 Against The Rush (Matmos Remix)

341 Top 11-25 LPs

Yes, I did top 30 EPs and only top 25 LPs, but that's because EPs are shorter... or something like that.   Here are the rest of my best LPs ever and its a bit of a wild ride.  Opening with the remix compilation from Third Eye Foundation, when I bought this I didn't recognize any of the artists names.  The music is so wonderfully strange, and not at all danceable electronica, well except for the last track I suppose.  Matt Elliott's style is in full effect here, showing how diverse and broad his range is.  Coming from appearances with bands like Flying Saucer Attack, Amp, and Hood, his solo project TEF was just mind-blowing and unexpected.  Then his solo work under his own name is sublime, dark acoustic songs.  Next up is Kid606 and the album that captured my attention the most when I first heard it, "Down With The Scene."  His other work at this time (Don't Sweat the Technics, and GQ on the EQ++) are a bit inconsistent, but have their great moments, its Down with the Scene that has the best album feel to it, and plenty of variety in his styles in anarcho-punk take on electronic music.  I always loved his puns as track titles.  The bonus track on this album (is it really a bonus if its on every edition?) is a welcomed glitchy Ragga/Drum N Bass workout from Hrvatski.

Then we come to Skinny Puppy, and I had a lot of internal conflict choosing between "Ain't It Dead Yet" and "Last Rights."   The live album won out because it was one of my first cassettes I'd bought from them, and their live presence and reworking of tracks is incredible.  Seeing them perform live twice has been on my top concerts ever list as they never disappoint.  I'm sad I missed their farewell tour this year.  I kept the industrial vibe going strong by selecting In Slaughter Natives for the next track.  I came across them via the "Absolute Supper" compilation, which will be featured in the upcoming Top Compilations mix.  This is some powerful industrial neo-classical stuff here and the whole album has this sinister and evil vibe to it.  Their performance on the Mort Aux Vaches series is worth checking out.  Still in the industrial vein, Scorn makes their second appearance on my top lists, this time its the album "Evanescence."  I first bought the "Silver Rain Fell" single because of the Meat Beat Manifesto remix on the B-Side, and realized how incredible this project of ex-Napalm Death members was.  This album and it's sister remix album "Ellipsis" represent a perfect moment in time where magic happened.  The samples they used are diverse, everything from The Residents, Zoviet France, The Human League, Spacement 3, Barry Adamson, Onyx, Monte Cazazza, Urban Dance Squad, to the Incredible Bongo Band.  Nothing else quite like this album, in its blend of illbient, dark ambient and industrial music.  What industrial section of a "best of" mix would be complete without Cabaret Voltaire?  Sure, this might not be on anyone else's top list, but for me this was one of my introduction points and the one I listened to the most.  I know, its a compilation and not an official album.  The tracks are great representations of their early years, and covers both the raw noisy stuff, the electro funk, and hints at the more subdued electronica that was to come later.

Not too much of a shift with moving to the second album from the Talking Heads.  Of course I knew all their hits from growing up with MTV, but this album was quite a surprise when I bought it from one of those dollar-a-CD clubs back in the 90s.  Quirky, funky pop music that was undeniably catchy.  "Psycho Killer" might be my favorite track, but this is my favorite album start to finish.  Sonic Youth and Daydream Nation, what can I say... was my favorite of theirs as a teen (Evol and Sister are tied for second place).  I used to listen to this cassette on road trips, and one time my Mom asked what I had on my walkman.  So I handed her the tape and the whole family listened to this album as we drove across Missouri.  That was one of the last times I was asked to share what was in my walkman.  Then we get to Aesop Rock, and his album "The Impossible Kid" is near perfect start to finish.  I rarely skip any track when I put it on.  He has certainly earned his place in hip hop royalty for having the largest vocabulary of any currently recorded MC.

Tortoise is another band I came to via Brainwashed.com.  Their unique blend of post-rock and jazz was a welcomed freshness to my collection when I found them.  This CD has the the epic Djed, which I left off because of its length, and the rest of the album ebbs and flows with such dynamic range and energy.  The list of members are a who's who of the Chicago area post-rock community and near every side project and solo effort is worth looking into.  Kid Koala came to me from some punk friends, and they were right to show appreciation, he is a great turntablist and has some excellent choices of samples and source material.  "Scratchcratchratchatch" is a joy, start to finish and I've even got my kids to appreciate it, through the "Dinner with Yoda" and "Tricks N Treats" tracks.  As for Spiritualized, I knew it was one of the guy's from Spacemen 3, and I had seen them open for Siouxsie and the Banshees on their Pure Phase tour.  Not what I expected opening for a Queen, so it took a year or two before I picked up this album.  Glad I did, the opening track is one of my all time favorites, with the layers upon layers of vocals.  The rest of the album is an epic rock display, and when I saw them again in 2004 I was an avid fan and thoroughly enjoyed every second of that show.

It took me a while to give Zola Jesus a try.  I'd seen her albums on several websites with glowing reviews, and I guess I assumed it was more pop and not likely my style.  I don't know why, but one day I just bought Taiga and Versions on vinyl and immersed myself in her glorious voice for a few days.  Needless to say I was wrong on my initial assumptions and glad I gave her a chance.  Such a powerful voice and songwriting, now I'm happy to share her music with anyone I can.  Next I took it back to the mid 90's and some straight forward electronic music with the compilation "Delusions of Grandeur."  Yes a compilation, but most of the album are Hardkiss aliases, so that's why I lumped in here instead of my top compilation mix.  It was the Rabbit in the Moon tracks and remixes that jumped out the most here.  That Tori Amos sample is fantastic and really adds to the climax.  I loved seeing RITM at a rave where they put on a fantastic performance with professional dancers and yes, the guy in the bunny suit.

Lastly, the undeniable creativity and humor of Vicki Bennett aka People Like Us.  I saw an advertisement saying she worked the merch counter at the Coil Presents Time Machines concert.  Since I loved anything and everything related to Coil, I bought her most recent album, the 2CD version of "Hate People Like Us" which has an elite roster of bonkers remix artists.  The ridiculous samples and splicing make for quite a humorous listen.  There was a time all her work was available for free at Ubuweb; even so, I've bought several of the CDs and a couple on vinyl because they are fun additions to my library.  I chose this one because Negativland did such a good job and turned some short samples into quite a nice full song, retaining much of the humor of the source material.  Then I added one more Kid606 track to close this out, hey its less than 15 seconds and is an awesome closer.

00:00  Tarwater - To Describe You (3rd Eye Foundation Remix) (I PooPoo on your Juju)
04:41  Kid606 - Buffalo606 - The Morning After (Down With The Scene)

18:28  Scorn - Silver Rain Fell (Evanescence)

273 - Tigerbeat6

Around 1999 I fell in deep with the glitchy, squelchy, punk fueled world of Kid606 and his labelmates.  I even recorded a 30 songs in 30 minutes DJ set from my living room during a party where all I played was Kid606 Cds/mp3s.  Many interesting releases on a slew of labels from Violent Turd, Vinyl Communications, Ipecac, 555, V/VM, and then their own lable Tigerbeat6.   Amazing stuff, all around and glad this crew were so tight night and all did guest appearances on each others albums.  Twenty plus years ago I had a field day researching and seeking this all out.  What is missing from this mix?  Matmos of course, and I think I had intended to do an all Matmos mix when I was compiling these tracks...we'll see if that ever materializes.  Not surprised that about half of these tracks aren't on spotify or youtube, so grab the download to enjoy the sounds of hard drives crashing.

Episode 155 - Coil & Associates

This mix is focusing on the later period of Coil's music, less industrial and more glitchy and ambient.  They were always forward thinkers and ahead of their peers.  I've included a lot of contemporaries and groups related to them in one way or another.  The Coil remixes of Scorn are some of the best works from either camp.  I remember my shock when I picked up the California Rhinoplasty EP from Matmos and found the Coil cover on it.  It has always piqued my interest on how the MBM track "hello teenage America" is so similar to Coil's "teenage lightening"; they both came out around the same time (89/90) and in my opinion the coincidences are too many to ignore.  When Coil started performing live, I heard that Vicki Bennett from PLU was working their merch counter.  The collaboration with COH man Ivan Pavlov resulted in some superb works under the SoiSong name.  The Threshold House was a nice post-Coil project from Sleazy too.  And then there is the deluge of unreleased tracks in the last few years, which while I enjoy hearing anything and everything they've created,  only some of it is really up to the standards of their 'released' material.

Episode 85 - Dark Electronica

A darker/noisier themed mix, while still very accessible.  The Bomb the Bass track would be right at home on any Meat Beat 90's era album.  This Scorn track is probably my favorite from their early period, making excellent use of a Residents' Vileness Fats sample.  Elvis Costello?  Sure, I think it fits the vibe all too well. The residents doing what they do best, I wish they'd played this when I saw them love, but they did "Six More Miles to the Graveyard" which was quite a pleasure.  Next up is some tape loop madness courtesy of Severed Heads, which I was lucky enough to pick up in the dollar bin at a local record store - they didn't know what they had, such as the other 1$ purchase of the VG+ original pressing of 20 Jazz Funk Greats.  Moving along in the mix to some more modern laptoptronica, noise rock, industrial classic, and a darker piece from On-U family. Ending with my favorite of the V/VM relations making a classic into nearly intolerable noise.

00:00 Bomb the Bass feat. Jack Dangers- Fire
03:40 Dead Voices on Air - Geong G'uma

Episode 60 - Befuddled with looming darkness

Dark ambient, and uneasiness abounds in these tracks.  A few sprinklings of stability and light peek through before closing with some aggression.  Despite the majority of their work, the Ozrics can really knock down some dark atmospherics.  Mt Fuji/Kilimanjaro drive it home with the doom jazz, along with Lech Jankowski (who scored most Brother's Quay films).  Keeping it more light with Isan, Accelera Deck (don't remember the name of this track), and a rarity from Autechre.  Some Laptoptronica to keep it quirky, and ending with some grimy dirty drum and bass.  Overall a fun and diverse mix, even if focusing on darker sounds throughout.

00:00 Ozric Tentacles - Toltec Spring
02:33 The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation - Strange Dreams

Episode 45 - The Definitive Third

Mix title pulled from Fellini's biography.  Bookended by the Dust Brothers (when they were still called that), and then filled with some fun, groovy, wonky electronic tracks.  That is one of my favorite Bjork remixes, its straightforward and not nearly as weird as most of her music gets.  This is the first Electrelane song I ever heard and fell in love with their style.  A recent announcement of a new This Immortal Coil album has be all abuzz again.  I think listeners will soon figure out that I try to work nearly every track from the Brain in the Wire compilation series into my mixes.  That and my fixation on the early era of Autechre tracks.  Hope everyone enjoys this one.

Episode 6 - Good Quirky Fun

A good mix of fun tracks.  I really loved making this mix (summer 2015) with some oddball tracks that fit together so well.  This is a very good representation of my musical taste in my college years.  Another track from the excellent Macro Dub Infection comp, the Mo Wax Excursions series, a Matmos track and the Novy Svet track that sampled it (quite the unexpected combination), a track from This is Home Entertainment, another leftover from Fridge.  I take every opportunity to include Broadcast in a mix, and ending with some laptoptronica and plunderphonics.
