314a Andrew Liles Avant Garde

Here beings a five part overview of Andrew Liles' work.  He has released so many albums I honestly cannot keep up, and I know my collection has some critical gaps.  While uploading these mixes, I found Spotify to be not worth the effort.  A quick search there yielded only three albums.  YouTube was better, though not enough of what I wanted to share was available.  I am hoping that these five mixes help introduce him to a new audience, or give existing fans of his work a nice reminder of the diversity of his catalog.

This first overview is focused on his unique, avant garde stylings.  Sure, most of his output falls into that category.

00:00  To Maim a Donkey Part 1 (Black Widow)
00:50  Untitled (Nocturne) (Prelude To An Un World)

312 Industrial and some EBM

311b - Broadcast's Odd Songs

Here are the tracks that endeared Broadcast as a solid spot on my all time favorites.  Their quirky, vintage, library sounds that they brought into pop culture and a wide fanbase.  To further their street cred in my book, anything Andy Votel touches is gold as well.  His remix takes an amazing song to even further levels.  The Broadcast remix of Gonjasufi is mind-blowing as well, sounds like it was plucked straight from the soundtrack of "Valarie and Her Week of Wonders."

00:00  Test Area
05:46  The Be Colony / Dashing Home / What On Earth Took You? (with The Focus Group)
08:01  The Caliph's Tea Party (Broadcast & The Focus Group "DedNd" remix, Gonjasufi remixed)

311a - Broadcast's Nice Songs

Why oh why did it take me this long to put out an overview of what is easily my favorite group of all times?  I cannot overstate how passionately I adore this music.  The Noise Made By People was my first exposure which was amazing as I had always associated WARP records with innovative IDM/electronica and dance oriented music.  Here was this group that had electronic elements, but with catchy pop hooks, creative lyrics, and a sound reminiscent of library music and 60's soundtracks.  Their start with singles on Stereolab's Duophonic label was the absolute best launching pad for their sound, and WARP gave them the right exposure as they build their label roster as well.  This is a band where I can truly say there is something for everyone, and I mean it.

There is also a great Broadcast overview mix at Nothing's Going to Happen's blog.  Definitely worth checking out, as it covers some different ground than my two mixes.

309b DJ Spooky mix 2

Second part, and what I'd consider more crowd pleasing tracks.  Maybe a little less abstract but still full of innovation.  I was so giddy with excitement when I heard DJ Spooky had a collaboration album with Twilight Circus (a personal top ten favorite).  Then even more excited for the sister EP with Alter Echo, just amazing stuff that bridges the gap of the dub with illbient masters.  I really don't recall why I only included one track from the remix album Dubtometry, probably because there was so much great music on all his other projects.  The Merzbow remix is pretty great, took the master of Japanoise and made it digestible for a larger audience.  As you can tell, I loved the Drums of Death album with Dave Lombardo - solid start to finish and so many incredible guest appearances on it.  One glaring omission in these mixes is the Creation Rebel and Trojan records albums, also worth checking out.

00:00  Synchronic Disjecta
04:23  Soon Forward
09:54  Rekonstruction (Rhyme and Reason mix feat Prince Poetry and Pharoah Monch)
13:30  Other Planes of Dub (Feat Twilight Circus)

309a DJ Spooky mix 1

Another amazing DJ that pushes boundaries and is hard to classify since he reinvents his sound with every album and project.  I was blown away by Riddim Warfare, my first exposure to his music.  I recall purchasing "Subliminal Minded" EP at Taang records near San Diego way back in the late 90s, and pretty sure I pissed off my punk friends by playing this frequently when I'd crash on their couches.  The collaborations with Freight Elevator Quartet and Scanner really blew me away and I was a dedicated fan from then on.  A common refrain here, I'm sad that Spotify has such a small selection of his works, as I think everyone should have the opportunity to hear DJ Spooky.

00:00  Intro: Anagramme Oulippienne

308b DJ Wally - Tree Smokin'

More jazz, less abstract, still amazing.  A lot of work with Matthew Shipp included here, and some collabs/remixes with another legend, Mr. Jack Dangers.  Solid bass grooves and funky drumming, which is a staple in all of DJ Wally's work.

When searching for images, I realized how many DJ Wally's there are out there.  It can be quite confusing for what I had naively thought was a unique name.  So here is a link to his discogs page for what I consider the preeminent DJ Wally.

308a DJ Wally - Hungry in the Abstrakt

A ridiculously original and engaging DJ that I came across on the Headz 2A and This Is Home Entertainment vol 2 compilations, which showcased the best and brightest of the illbient and adjunct genres.  DJ Wally's contribution to the Jess Franco tribute "The Spirit of Vampyros Lesbos" is absolute gold.  He did dive into a bit of drum and bass and two-step, but his downtemp and illbient works are where I focus my attention, though I did include a couple of my favorites in this mix. The second half of this mix will address his work with Thirsty Ear, and the jazzier stylings he has offered.

306 Popular songs with context

Inferred from the last mix and this one, I was in a much more lighthearted mood, after spending much of last week's posts diving deep into the dark realms of Current 93.  Life is all about balance and moderation after all.  Some call outs, I always preferred this version of Pretty in Pink, not as polished as the one from the movie.  My wife and I used to watch History Detectives on PBS and I loved that they used Elvis for the theme.  This Keren Ann track stands out in how it seamlessly transverses multiple genres in a short space.  The Iggy Pop track seems to get stuck in my head at least a few times a year.  RIP Prince, I was thrilled to see some of these tracks come out of his vault.  Last year my Xmas gift to my Dad was the Steve Miller box set, and yeah I do like a couple of his tracks.  Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, we listen to Redbone at least once a week now.  Had to include my favorite track by Bowie, and the prettiest song by VU.

00:00  Johnny Cash - A Boy Named Sue
03:49  The Psychedelic Furs - Pretty In Pink
07:33  Elvis Costello - Watching The Detectives
11:11  Keren Ann - Lay Your Head Down
15:51  The Pretenders - Brass In Pocket
18:49  Iggy Pop feat Kate Pierson - Candy
22:41  Nina Simone - Here Comes The Sun
26:10  The Rolling Stones - I'm Free
28:29  The Faces - Ooh La La
31:45  Prince - Manic Monday
34:31  Steve Miller Band - Take The Money and Run
37:11  Redbone - Come and Get Your Love
40:31  David Bowie - Sound and Vision

305 New and Old leftovers

Odd assortment of oldies and not so oldies.  These are all tracks that didn't make the final cut of my previous mixes, and fortunately they all fit together nicely here.  If only I included a couple tracks by the Kinks, this could almost pass off for a Wes Anderson soundtrack.

02:39  Tim Buckley - I Never Asked To Be Your Mountain
08:31  The Mamas and The Papas - California Dreamin

An update

For the last almost year I've diligently shared one mix a day, nearly every day.  I've got another 50 or so finished, and typically 100 or more in the works.   I never thought I could keep up this feverish pace forever.  Going forward my plan is to share 2-3 full mixes a week, giving me more time to work on new ones and actually digest more of the records I've been purchasing.

Not going anywhere, just slowing down a little.  I'm always open to requests and suggestions, and love discourse on any band, genre or musical topic.  Please call out other sites and mixes to me as well, I love finding something new.
