484 Hard Rock Early Metal - overlooked in the 70s

Back in action, thanks for your patience as I focused on self-care the last few weeks.  I'd been playing with this track list for about a year.  Then we had a massive snowstorm which kept my kids home from school for 2 1/2 days.  They were going stir crazy, which made my day job difficult as I work from home.  One of my kids' friend's dad sent a recommendation to check out Somewhere Stranger's album "Delta Minor."   That kicked me into high gear to share the below Spotify playlist which was well received.  All us dads need some good classic rock to pass the time during busy work days.

Also, I cancelled my Mixcloud membership.  I'm open to suggestions if there is another free site to host these files for streaming.  Otherwise, its download for the mixed version, or Spotify for the mostly complete track lists (I continue my frustration with that service as I find so many songs and artists are unavailable there).

335 Pink's Other Animals

A companion to the best Pink Floyd album.  Pulling alternate & early versions and some solo tracks from the era that fit well in the scenario of what if Roger Waters wasn't the main songwriter for this album.  I pulled most of this another blog, which I'd cite but honestly can't find the link anymore.  Having heard the album tracks so many times (and never get sick of them), it is refreshing and brings much joy hearing these two live versions from 1974, 3 years before Animals was released.  The alternate lyrics are fantastic.

Inferred from the last mix and this one, I was in a much more lighthearted mood, after spending much of last week's posts diving deep into the dark realms of Current 93.  Life is all about balance and moderation after all.  Some call outs, I always preferred this version of Pretty in Pink, not as polished as the one from the movie.  My wife and I used to watch History Detectives on PBS and I loved that they used Elvis for the theme.  This Keren Ann track stands out in how it seamlessly transverses multiple genres in a short space.  The Iggy Pop track seems to get stuck in my head at least a few times a year.  RIP Prince, I was thrilled to see some of these tracks come out of his vault.  Last year my Xmas gift to my Dad was the Steve Miller box set, and yeah I do like a couple of his tracks.  Thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, we listen to Redbone at least once a week now.  Had to include my favorite track by Bowie, and the prettiest song by VU.

More classic rock brought on while watching Supernatural.  This IS the only time you'll see Aerosmith in one of my mixes, because I just don't care for them at all.  I had a debate with someone online once who said Steven Tyler was THE greatest rock vocalist ever, and my stance was that he embodies everything I dislike in a rock singer.  I enjoyed revisiting the videos for some of these.  The video from Yes has always stuck with me since I was a kid, it was strange then and strange now but is pretty cool.  The long pause for the birds flight, the industrial garage that looks like Einsturzende Neubauten recording an album.  Plus that iconic drum break.  Good stuff.

Episode 129 - Pink Floyd mix A

Pink Floyd are an incredible band with so many distinct phases to their 50+ year journey.  I had a friend that would dive into this big philosophical rant about how someone's favorite era or album from Floyd could say a lot about their personality.  I wish I'd paid more attention.  Still, I have noticed that you are either a fan or you are not, and those that are fans are pretty passionate about one era over another.  It seems that several people I've met tend to love the first album of theirs that they heard, over anything that came later in their exploration.  For me, it all began with "Meddle".  I picked up "A Collection of Great Dance Songs" at a pawn shop  Then "The Wall", and "Relics".  Their later period just never really drew my attention as much as the earlier days.  One of my past roommates loved "Ummagumma" another thought "Animals" was the greatest ever, and we'd listed to those together often.

Episode 69 - Classic Rocks mix 1

In my opinion, a good classic rock mix is essential to any road trip.  Something everyone will know every song and can sing along.  It helps the time go by faster and more enjoyably.  I was partly inspired by all the great classics included in the Supernatural TV show soundtrack, but went well beyond that to include some personal favorites.  I am aware this is out of sequence with my numbering convention, I had delayed its publication because its so much more of a straightforward mix that is contrast to what I usually share, but I do listen to this a lot while driving so figured, what the heck!
