Ambitious April...

I love a good remix.  The ones that are more a reconstruction, or ooze with the remixer's personal touch and sound.  My plan here is to continue the approach from Future Vintage on their series "The Remix According To..."  which was on their blog (making a comeback after a decade hiatus) and continued on their YouTube channel.

What I've done is select some of my favorite remixers, and pulled what I consider as their best tracks together.  Some made two or three full mixes since I had so much material to work with.  I plan to upload one of these each day for most of the next month, so check back frequently.  36 mixes covering 23 remix artists 47 mixes covering 32 remix artists.  This is a rather ambitious project that I've spent a lot of time on.  Hope everyone enjoys the end results.  Love to hear thoughts and comments on what was selected or omitted.  There will be both familiar and hopefully new names to introduce through this series.  I stayed away from artists that already had remix compilations available, or if they did I focused on tracks not included there.

These four artists I had planned but did not complete.  The Orb, way too massive a discography and a lot are covered through Auntie Aubrey comps. Justin K Broadrick, again just too many great ones to sort through a pick favorites.  Jim O'Rourke, sadly most of what I have is in low bit rate and not worth sharing.  Sonic Boom, I don't have enough releases to make it worthwhile.

Then there are these, which I've already shared on my blog.
Seefeel Though I should probably do another and focus on each member's solo works (Disjecta/Locust/Van Hoen/Clifford)
Meat Beat Manifesto (they will make another appearance)
Muslimgauze (I have something fun planned for them in this series)

There is no shortage of songs about music itself, there could've been multiple volumes to a mix on this subject.  This mix are some tracks that stood out to me and others that are just classics that most people would know every word to.  Some only have a line, others tackle a whole subject, a few pay homage to vinyl as a medium, and others still focus on a single artist.

388 Tsundoku

Tsundoku (積ん読) is the phenomenon of acquiring reading materials but letting them pile up in one's home without reading them.

I have wanted to make more themed mixes lately, and inspired by the great topics by Pol Inate over at What's The Connection blog I came up with this mix of songs about reading.  It was quite challenging and rewarding as I only had a couple in mind to start with.  I began with The Sundays and their iconic line "the books that you read were all I loved you for," and then immediately jumped to Big Thief saying, "I see you as you see yourself through all the books you read."   Then I started thinking through the many other releases I have and started finding a lot on the theme of reading books.

The Talking Heads so poetically stated, "The book I read was in your eyes."  Magnetic Fields with their quirky charm stated very accurately, "The book of love is long and boring. No one can lift the damn thing."  Always easily recognizable, Belle & Sebastian are relatable with, "Our aspirations are wrapped up in books."  Nick Cave gives a good history lesson, "John Wilmot penned his poetry Riddled with the pox. Nabokov wrote on index cards, At a lectern, in his socks. St. John of the Cross did his best stuff Imprisoned in a box. And Johnny Thunders was half alive When he wrote Chinese Rocks."  I could've chosen any of a dozen songs from him.

Ian waxes poetic with "I've seen it in your eyes, I've read it in books. Who wants love Without the looks?"  Bob Mould gets nostalgic through his track, which gets more and more relatable with each passing verse.  Then we have Los Campesinos with one of the best track titles.  Her Space Holiday makes you wonder what people remember of you, did you impact someone so much that they think of you when reading books or listening to music?  Caamp reminds us that, "we're just books upon a shelf."  Emily Haines (a new one for me while compiling this mix) sparks the imagination by telling us about "All of your lives unled, reading in bed."  Camera Obscura touches on something very important (as a father of two daughters) in their "Books written for girls."

I went way back for this Fairpoint Convention Song, and I love the lyrics about wondering what's on someone's mind when they leave a book to be with someone nearby.  The Teardrop Explodes coming in strong with a cover of the Echo & Bunnymen track I had also included.  They're distinct enough in sound that I didn't notice this one was a cover - I left them both in because they're both wonderful versions of this track.  Then XTC closing out my thought stream here with a very poignant reminder that, "Books are burning in the still air, And you know where they burn books, people are next."

After all this, its a good reminder to update my Good Reads app and knock off more of my book challenge for this year.  5 down, 18 to go!

00:00  The Sundays - Here's Where The Story Ends
03:45  Broadcast - The Book Lovers
07:10  Talking Heads - The Book I Read
11:10  Big Thief - Vampire Empire

387 Three Questions: Happiness and Fond Memories

The third of his questions.  Songs that evoke happiness and fond memories.

His Name Is Alive's track is kind of my spiritual anthem when I am out in nature and feel that meditation-connectedness and bliss as if I'm part of everything.  This Godspeed You Black Emperor is a little long, but has such a powerful climax and impact on me; I can't do anything but smile - this is purportedly a reworking of Henryk Gorecki's Symphony No 3 Op 36 (Symphony of Sorrowful Songs).  Seefeel are an electronic/shoegaze band and this is my favorite from them - brings such joy everytime I hear its hypnotic sounds.   Broadcast, easily my all time favorite artist, I had a very hard time selecting one song.  Psychic TV's The Orchids is such an out of place track for them (most of the members were the first industrial band Throbbing Gristle).  The Sundays are my guilty pleasure, and I absolutely adore this song.  This Devendra Banhart cover of Townes Van Zandt is very special, it's the song I sang both of my daughters to sleep with.  Lastly is Bright Eyes, and this song hits so close to home it could've been written about my group of friends in the 90s.

03:52  Godspeed You Black Emperor - Moya
14:24  Seefeel - Spangle

386 Three Questions: Comfort During Hard Times

The second question, a good subject here.  Not going into as many details/history but these songs all got frequent airplay when I was going through difficult times, both as a youth and an adult.  These are easily the most relatable songs in my collection.

Well maybe I will over-share anonymously here as opposed to directly at work.  "Cool Waves" and "Floating in Space" were from when I was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer and literally had days to get surgery before I would've been terminal.  "Avalanche" is from when I lost my mother to cancer, I still can't make it all the way through this song.  "Take Your Burden to the Lord" was when I was dropped from chemotherapy because I was no longer a candidate and had to manage my recovery on my own, which I did through Ayurveda, diet and a positive mindset.  "Flow my Tears" is my go to song anytime I am feeling down. "Lucifer Landed" is for anytime I question myself or my intentions.  "Holy" reminded me of an ex, that dumped me because I wasn't Christian enough for her.  "The Skeleton Collection" is a little too on point for me.  And "It's a Crime" is a good reminder of seizing the moment to say what's on your mind before its too late.

00:00  Spiritualized - Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space
03:39  Spiritualized - Cool Waves
08:32  Leonard Cohen - Avalanche

385 Three Questions: Altered Perceptions

One of my employees and I have frequent conversations about music, and he likes to pose questions that warrant a lot of thinking before responding.  The next three mixes are his latest questions of me, and all have a similar theme.

What songs permanently altered your perceptions?

This is my jam.  The music I enjoy the most is constantly pushing boundaries and expanding perceptions beyond what most consider normal or accessible music.  Stereolab and Nurse With Wound is a match no one could have ever seen coming - this track is their homage to the German band Faust and sounds like nothing the two bands had ever done on their own.  Coil are truly like nothing else out there, reinventing their own experimental sound with every release; this track is exactly like the title, beauty found in chaos (afterwards look for their track "Pre-Original Chaostrohpy" on youtube to hear the straight orchestral version).  The Residents are by definition difficult music, off putting and hard to sit through - challenging listeners successfully for over 50 years.  They now have a permanent installation in MOMA in New York.  This track is an Indonesian Gamelan orchestra interpreting one of their earliest tracks to great success.  Labradford is ambient/slow-core, and Matmos are the A-Team of glitchy electronica, this track is challenging and rewarding for the patient listener.  Future Sound of London takes electronic music far beyond club/dance oriented, this whole EP is one of my favorites from them, and the first I heard and sparked much joy because I recognized most of the samples they were using.  Cyclobe makes music that is almost too creepy for horror movies, this track is actually a remix of a group called People Like Us, that creates from plunderphonics; I love this track because it combines so many elements and has a 70's Italian Giallo film feel to it.  Fridge is another unique group, they create their own acoustic samples, and then sequence them in spectacular fashion.  A Small Good Thing, a side project from O Yuki Conjugate, they create soundtracks for imaginary movies.  This track from an imagined Spaghetti Western which sparked my love of the Ambient Americana genre.

00:00  Nurse With Wound & Stereolab - Animal or Vegetable (A Wonderful Wooden Reason)
13:23  Coil - Chaostrophy
18:57  The Residents and Sekar Jaya - Santa Dog for Gamelan Orchestra

384 Sports, Not Heavy Crime

This is another downtempo electronic mix of stuff I'd been listening to at the time.  I'd been wanting to include this Elvis Costello remix for a while, not easy since its long.  It is kind of the focal piece here, bringing it all together before cooling off towards the end.  The first track I got from a record label sampler with the Wire.  Akusmi and Young Marco are leftover tracks from my unexpected Gamelan mixes.  Death and Vanilla as familiar from my Hauntology mixes, and this "dub" remix album is quite interesting, jury is still out for me though I do find this track as a standout.  I've been really enjoying All India Radio lately, they're a great mix tape band since I rarely find myself engaged for a full album.  Jumping ahead, I've got a lot of FSOL albums and am slowing working through all of them again finding wonderful gems amongst their consistently strong catalog.  I love the Headz 2A compilation from Mo Wax and every time I revisit it I find another incredible track, like this Stereo MC's one.  Then the aforementioned Elvis track, which DJ Food work their magic on and make it sound like nothing you'd ever expect from Mr. Costello. Finally some prog, electro dub, and glitch-hop to close it out.

00:00  Xploding Plastix - Sports, Not Heavy Crime
05:02  Akusmi - Divine Moments of Truth

383 Birthday Mix

Still not my birthday, and I have no idea where the name of this mix came from aside from probably being pulled from track 1.  That particular track is from a 7" that came out in 2003, which is my best marker for the time I made this mix.  I have at least three digital back ups of this mix and in all cases 32 of 38 numbered tracks survived. Then there are five tracks with only cryptic file name, three of which are certainly samples from Warner Brothers' Bugs Bunny cartoons.  Still, a wacky and enjoyable mix of very random crazy music.  I apologize in advance for some low bit rates on a handful of tracks.

379 Mark S is Throwing Things

This next set of four mixes I made for my friend Mark S, also from around 2010.  We used to swap mix tapes a lot (I will have some of his uploaded in the near future), and then I moved on to CDr's and he did not.  I made this set of four for him as I have a tendency to overwhelm people with music.  This one is still one of my favorite mixes I've made.  In hindsight I'd likely swap out just a couple tracks, but overall its one I'm proud of.  Lots of garage, punk, pop-punk/alternative, and touching on shoegaze.  Back when I was more on top of sneaking dialogue samples into mixes.

377 Shoegaze-ish mix 3
