397 The Remix According To Higher Intelligence Agency

Higher Intelligence Agency were one of the first IDM groups that really stood out to me, aside from Autechre.  Mesmerized by Colourform, I was then completely blown away by Reform, the accompanying remix EP.  I had also picked up their collaborations with Deep Space Network, Pete Namlook and Biosphere, though never gave much thought to their remix side.  That was until I picked up "From The Edge" by Muslimgauze and couldn't believe it was the same group.  Many of the rest of these remixes I've included I had in my collection for years and never really paid attention to them.  My ears are wide open now and glad I've given them all the attention they deserve.

396 The Remix According To Andy Votel

Mr. Finders Keepers himself.  Once a hip hop DJ, then a label owner responsible for reissues of the most bizarre and beautiful items.  Husband of Jane Weaver and frequent DJ on several podcasts.  He's got his own style which is right up my alley for unique music.  

This Broadcast track is from the Warp 10/3 double CD of remixes and is exactly what I was hoping for in a remix of their work.  Andy did several remixes for Badly Drawn Boy, and I chose my favorites here.  They're a band I really should give more attention to.  Then comes Pram, who I only recently started getting into and am really enjoying what I've come across.  Always loved Lamb and most of their remixes really elevate the music to something joyous.  Ian Brown is an artist where I loved his work with The Stone Roses, but never paid much attention to his solo work.   Mr Scruff has that nice hauntology hip hop vibe to this remix.  The Avalanches are known for sample heavy work, and Andy adds just enough to this one to make it accessible.  Then his wife Jane Weaver, of course he's going to do this one properly and make it epic.  I wasn't familiar with Boozoo Bajou before this mix, and find this kind of like a more chaotic Broadcast.  Another from Badly Drawn Boy and Jane Weaver.  Then The Other Two, named appropriately for those that exited New Order early on, with a bit of a twist on shoegaze with some hard hitting breaks.  Elbow was another new one for me, and a happy find.  Ending it with Kings of Convenience, whom I knew of but never paid much attention to; a bit of a soft ballad to end this mix.

395 The Remix According To Matmos

The A-Team of Electronica, Matmos!  They are worthy of all the praise and hype.  No one else does the cut up sample based madness quite like they do.  I came across them initially via Tigerbeat6 and Kid606, then dove into their discography based on amusing and accurate song titles and themed albums.  Since the 90's I have followed their every twist and turn.  Their approach to a remix is very transformative, taking elements of the original and using them as instruments in their own creations.  You can tell what the source material is, but it is so far removed from what the original structure was.

I started this one out with their humor side, from the NWA tribute remix album "With Attitude" which features every associate of Kid606 that he could gather.  This isn't an NWA remix in any sense of the word, though it was a standout track on that compilation.  Next is my perennial cocktail hour music, Tipsy, and this one of many excellent tracks from their "Remix Party."  People Like Us is Vicki Bennett and she's the queen of plunderphonics and runs an excellent weekly podcast on WFMU called "Do or DIY."  This track was from a split 12" that never materialized, so thank the internet for getting these files out which are now readily available from Ubuweb or Archive.org.  Slag Boom Van Loon is a wonderful side project of Jochem Paap (Speedy J) and Mike Paradinas (u-Ziq).  Its as wonderful as you would expect, and the remix companion album is even better (Boards of Canada, Leafcutter John, Horse Opera, Four Tet, Pole, Coil and of course Matmos).  This Labradford track is from the Wire Tapper series, and takes a beautiful track of shimmering bliss and acoustic ambience and turns it into a glitch filled noisy wild ride.  I'll write up more about this track in a subsequent mix I already have planned on influential tracks in my life.  The Bjork, which of course I have to include because of their stint as parts of her entourage.  Instead of including tracks they contributed to, I went with the two on this mix to showcase their contributions and remix skills.  The Kid606 track I included here was the one that opened my eyes and ears to Matmos so many years ago.  Her Space Holiday is a group I only knew from a split EP with Bright Eyes.  The more I dig into their discography, the more I like them.  

Next up is Current 93 (first of two appearances).  Of course I'm a lifetime admirer of David Tibet's work, and this remix EP split between Foetus and Matmos is quite the anomaly in their history - and it stands out because of that and how amazing each and every track is on it.  Liars, June of 44 and Erase Errata are all noisy, math rocking, punks which seem to appeal to Matmos as their remixes really shine with this kind of source material.  I'm particularly fond of the wordplay on the June of 44 track, which references Matmos' album "A Chance to Cut is a Chance to Cure."  Chiara String Quartet and Phoenecia are ones that I found only when researching this mix so not much to say on them.  Pluramon is another artist I found via Kid606, though not on his Tigerbeat6 label.  Slicker is a related glitchy artist, though more pop oriented, and fun anecdote, is the son of film maker John Hughes.

This mix is painful at points to get through, but therein lies the reward.  Hope you enjoyed the ride on this one.

394 The Remix According To The Drum Club

I kinda feel like the Drum Club get overlooked.  They didn't have a huge output, though they were part of the first wave of techno artists that really helped build the scene and define trance music.  They split up in 1996, and neither member had much output after that, I think they both went into the business side of music and labels.  Honestly, I wanted to do this mix just to express my adoration of the remixes they did for Lush and Chapterhouse.

The first mix starts off with a self-remix, ending with wonderful use of Hildegard von Bingen, which should be easily recognizable as their peers Orbital made good use of this in their track Belfast from the same era.  Next is a remix of New Fast Automatic Daffodils covering Consolidated, from a double disc of remixes called "This is Fascism."  Well worth picking up as every track is solid and the list of remixers will astonish.  Then Curve, making ample use of the 303.  Then we have the Lush track I mentioned.  Goodness all three are incredible on the promo only release.  I love this one for its bare bones deconstruction of the song elements.  I wish I had a better copy; the vinyl is rare and not many copies available stateside. Next up is Chapterhouse, the other track I referenced earlier.  Another solid reinterpretation/deconstruction of a shoegazer band.  Jah Wobble transformed into a standard trance tune.  This is a new one for me, not surprising with how vast Psychic TV's discography is - I would never have guessed this was a remix of their music.  Ending part 1 with Dreadzone, and a slow builder of a remix typical of the style and era.

The second mix begins with a favorite of mine, the Psychick Warriors Ov Gaia.  I played their CDs so much back in the day, never really liking their music being tagged as "tribal."  Still, great work, and love the continuation of the sound with Exquisite Corpse.  Then Loop Guru, which a friend blindly bought me the CD back in the 90's because she knew I'd be into them; she was right.  Up next is a self remix of Alchemy which I first came across as the Orbital remix on Dub House Disco 2000.  This is a very well done digi-dub remix of that track and is quite enjoyable despite sounding 20 years old.  Another Psychic TV remix, because I couldn't choose between this and the one on the previous mix, both great in their own ways though this one does sound more era appropriate for Genesis and his band of merry minstrels.  When I saw that Drum Club had remixed the Fall I just had to include this track.  Not what I ever expected to hear Mark E Smith's voice with.  Works well for this style.  Transglobal Underground seems like a natural fit with the Drum Club's tribal/trance output.  Ending it all with Killing Joke because of how awesome they, and this remix are.

393 The Remix According To Andrew Weatherall

The second artist featured also needs no introduction.  Whether you know his name, or his work as Sabres of Paradise or Two Lone Swordsmen, he is legendary at every step of his career.  Here I've spread his easily recognizable tracks across all three mixes, and then filled in the rest with my favorites.  I didn't realize how much I had in my collection util I started pulling this together.  I think my earliest exposure to his remixing prowess was Meat Beat Manifesto, Bjork, My Bloody Valentine, Scorn, The Chemical Brothers, and of course The Orb.  Reinvigorated when I got my hands on the Calexico remix as well.  The rest are excellent ways to fill in the space between the more familiar tunes to me.  Not a dull moment across these three playlists.

392 The Remix According To Adrian Sherwood

Starting this project off with a big one and showcasing his diversity and depth.  I think everyone that frequents my blog could easily make their own mixes of his works, and likely already have.   I chose my favorites here, and loosely banded them together by genre.  The first mix is all industrial and then alternative rock.  The second mix is what we all know and love, his dub stylings that are more akin to On-U records.  I don't think I need to give any background, or notes on these tracks as they can all speak for themselves.  For longtime fans, there is nothing new here.  For those still learning the importance of this artist, hopefully this will shed some light on his alchemy.
