359 Punk Covers

More from diving into my big folder of favorite cover songs.  This is a punky, noisy mix with some absolute winners.  This is such a wonderful opener from Asobi Seksu, and there exists an even better acoustic live version of this cover.  Nirvana comes to us via the 14 songs for Greg Sage and the Wipers, which was a shock to the system and eye opener when I bought that tribute; exposed to so many great songs and artists - another is included later in this mix.  A Place To Bury Strangers covering the Prids is just perfection.  This is how I learned of the Prids, and they quickly became a favorite band.  Their whole tribute albums is pretty solid, even has a rare appearance from the Wendys.  Tying into Skywave, they were the mother group that split into A Place to Bury Strangers and Ceremony, this tribute album also features the Prids, kinda goes full circle there.  Then we get to the fantastic Lush cover of Wire, a perfect match up in my opinion.  I think they also covered "Outdoor Miner" as a B-Side somewhere.  Not so rare, the Pixies covering Jesus and Mary Chain from their Trompe Le Monde album.  I've always thought this was a fan service between bands, since it was released the same year as the original (or pretty close).  A rare and good cover of Stereolab, which I always thought was a challenge.  Stereolab and Fuzagi are two bands I think its a daunting challenge to cover.

Crackerbash is a flash in the pan, still one of my favorite bands, and I was shocked to find this Spinanes cover, and even more shocked that it was good.  The Dinosaur Jr cover of the Cure is a classic, I think any fan of either band should already be aware of this amazing version.  I got several friends into Dinosaur Jr because of this track.  The Rapture's cover of Psychedelic Furs is a bit out of character for them, from my limited knowledge of their work.  This is a solid 7" on Gold Standard Laboratories, which is how I found them.  My whole family are fans of The Gaslight Anthem, and their cover of Tom Petty is a lot of fun, my second favorite Tom cover behind seeing The Black Heart Procession live when they played "You Got Lucky."   Asobi Seksu's second appearance on this mix, from the split EP where she and Boris cover each other's songs to great acclaim.  Then the first of two Face to Face appearances, this time covering Joy Division in their own style which I like - I did edit the intro where they attempt to do the original style and admit it isn't working for them.  My punk friend Joe brought the Living End to my attention with this song, knowing I liked the Cure.

I really like how Moby wears his punk roots on his sleeve with a great cover like this one.  Here are the second Crackerbash and Greg Sage appearances, and this medley is in my opinion better than the original tracks.  Following that with a classic from 7 Seconds, yes they can both Rock and Walk together with tracks like this.  Sublime, before they really blew up released this excellent Bad Religion cover on their 40 oz to Freedom album.  I like this side of their music more than the ska punk style on the rest of that album, and before their top 40 college radio friendly style of music. Still respect for them and my kids love their music too.  The Stitches was like the quintessential album for my friend group in high school.  I think we each had a difference cover of the 8x12 LP.  Face to Face again, and a Fugazi cover?  As I said before this is a challenge but I think they did it justice.  Ending it all with a Blitz cover by The Bruisers, which some may notice as the singer for the Dropkick Murphys' first band.

    1. Wild! I can imagine some interesting stories. I used to have a couple albums from them, but this Cure cover seems to be the only thing left in my collection.
