235 - Clouddead Mush Anticon

I knew the first time I heard Clouddead that they were not your average hip hop group.  I bought one, then the other five 10" records they put out in the original run.  I saw the wonderful Anticon / Sole / Restiform Bodies / Blevin Blechdom tour way back in the day and was thoroughly impressed.  I bought a lot of merch and think I still have some buttons floating around in my desk.  In subsequent years, I kept following many of the artists in this collective: Aesop Rock, Boom Bip, Alias, Odd Nosdam, Why?, Doseone, Sole, etc.  Sage Francis got really popular, but I didn't much care for his solo stuff.  Great stuff, and hip hop for the abstract, lots to dive into here.

Most of these songs are from my teenage years, and I have such fond memories of them.  I chose all of these as more dramatic reworking of the original material.  Sometimes I sought out the remix based on the remixer's credits alone.  As usual, my taste in electronic music is not focused on dance floor tracks, so expect some more unusual flair in these tunes.   Again, most of these aren't on Spotify which is annoying.

303 - Laswell's Delicate Touch

I couldn't resist, here is a bonus 7th mix in this series.

This is presented far out of order, but it closes out the week of adoration of Bill Laswell.  Last summer I went hiking with a close friend and we listened to the Laswell remix/reconstruction of Miles Davis' works while romping around on 4-wheel trails in the Colorado mountains.  It was a magnificent experience for me, one of the first times I got out after major surgery, and really kickstarted my healing process by surrounding myself with nature.  At the time, I was also heavily researching Ayurveda practices and implementing lifestyle changes and found so much of Laswell's music as a perfect background for meditation and reciting mantras.  Later that year I picked up his Lost Remix series from his bandcamp page, and that really ignited my desire to finish this last overview mix.  Its a long one, but probably my favorite that I've made.

233f - A few long tracks from Laswell

This mix features the first tracks of Bill Laswell's that I really got into.  Sure I'd heard plenty and his name was familiar to me so these were the beginnings of me actively seeking out his material.  The Orb Remix of Mantra was from Trance Europe Express and stood out as something unique in that otherwise excellent compilation.  Then I purchased my first album from Bill Laswell Lo-Def Pressure, which was this beautiful combination of drum and bass and tablas.  A friend gave me a copy of Cyclops which was also great, and a clear divergence from the superb and sublime dub that I knew Laswell best for.  Oddly in the middle of this mix is one of the most recent tracks I came across from Laswell, in his Lost Remixes series.  Then of course, the tremendously wonderful "Western Lands" which is another great project alongside Hashisheen telling the story of Alamut and Hasan I Sabbah.  The ending this with my #1 favorite track, Bill's remix of Scorn's Night Ash Black.  I can and have listened to that track on repeat for hours.

Starting a six day stretch showcasing the big beautiful dub infected world of Bill Laswell.   This guy has touched near every genre of music, and has produced massive hits (Herbie Hancock's Rockit for example).  He dove in and made some of the best illbient, drum and bass, free jazz, all when those genres were in their infancy.  His exploration of ambient and world music is absolutely engrossing and rewarding.   Here's a quick dip into that world music style, with some ambient moments.  I didn't include much of his ambient music in this series of mixes as those are all generally album long pieces that should be taken in as a whole and not mixed together.

231a - Jesu overview pt1

Jesu is the post-Godflesh project from Justin K Broadrick.  It became his full time focus, and not another side project.  The style began similar enough to how Godflesh wrapped up (in their first incarnation); and sure enough the last song on the last album was named Jesu and gave a preview of what was to come.  After the first couple albums, Jesu & Conqueror, the style became more post-rock and less doom-heavy.  There are moments that are almost pop-post-metal in style with an almost accessible sound coming from this.  That was always offset by the side long, ambient-metal tracks and still heavier than a death in the family sound on many tracks.  One regret is that I missed the opportunity to see them perform on tour with Isis (the band).

230a - Third Eye Foundation overview

Matt Elliott aka Third Eye Foundation has made quite an impact on me.  From his humble beginnings as part of the space rock band Amp, to the post-rock of Movietone, he came out with a very distinct sound that was fully developed when he began his solo project Third Eye Foundation.  Noisy, shoegaze influence breaks and drum and bass that was unique and easily recognizable.  Despite taking a couple 8-10 year breaks between albums while he focused on his solo work under his own name (which is incredible stuff, melancholy singing over fingerpicked guitar) the Third Eye Foundation continues to go strong.

P229a/b/c - Autechre Overview

A five mix overview of another longtime favorite of mine.  I fell hard for the unique sound of Autechre when I purchased the Basscad EP when it first came out.  That and the Tri Repetae++ double CD remain permanently in my desert island albums list, and yes I think I did end up including nearly every track from Tri Pepetae++ across these mixes, or most of them.  They have such a distinct sound that developed over their career.  Even the early days of WARP IDM, Autechre stood out from the crowd.  The subsequent albums kept diverging further and further from anything that could ever be considered dance music.  Eventually ending up doing collaborations with Hafler Trio show just how far they push boundaries of contemporary electronica.

226 - SN Classic Rock volume 3

More classic rock brought on while watching Supernatural.  This IS the only time you'll see Aerosmith in one of my mixes, because I just don't care for them at all.  I had a debate with someone online once who said Steven Tyler was THE greatest rock vocalist ever, and my stance was that he embodies everything I dislike in a rock singer.  I enjoyed revisiting the videos for some of these.  The video from Yes has always stuck with me since I was a kid, it was strange then and strange now but is pretty cool.  The long pause for the birds flight, the industrial garage that looks like Einsturzende Neubauten recording an album.  Plus that iconic drum break.  Good stuff.
