240 - Based out of Twin Peaks

Songs that reference or sample Twin Peaks.  There are a lot, and I picked the ones most appealing to me.   Yes I know I picked the less obvious track from Stars of the Lid.  Ending the mix with the long and difficult homage by V/VM. Sit back, and enjoy some damn fine coffee and cherry pie that'll kill ya.

Furthering my mixes (126A and 126B) in this genre, more soundtracks for the dusty old west.  These are my go-to anytime I'm alone and have to drive more than an hour somewhere.  I must be tapping into a past life, because this certainly is not what I'd expect for a suburbanite soccer dad office worker.

238 - Drum and Bass

Way back in the late 90s, I was open to a lot of electronic music, and drum and bass was really starting to emerge as more than a sub-genre or fad.  Sure, there was jungle, dark drum and bass, breaks, and then it kind of eventually morphed into dub step which I cannot stand.  I like the class rolling synthy 808 bass drops, the renegade snares, the choppy beats, the frantic nature of some of this stuff.  A friend once described the style as hip hop beats sped up, over reggae beats slowed down.  This is a bit of a manic mix, with some fast beats holding it together. Ending with more noise than traditional drum and bass, but that's how I like it.

No clue why I didn't include Omni Trio, Spring Heel Jack, or Ed Rush & Optical... or pretty much anything from Moving Shadow records.  I'll have to remedy that someday.

237 - Moby early years overview

Moby?  Seriously?   Yeah, I had a brief moment where I was really into his music.  Based on this overview you can tell which era.  By the time "Animal Rights" came out I was completely over it and never purchased another CD from him.  Glad he went on to such great success, but his humble beginnings is where I found the most joy.  These were some of the first "techno" CDs I bought, and it was the dubby feel to "Move" on Trance Europe Express that solidified my appreciation (sorry it wasn't available in the Spotify mix).  I saw him perform as the opening act on the "See The Light" tour with Vapourspace, Orbital and Aphex Twin.  The Twin Peaks homage "Go" is always great, and the b-sides from those early EPs are better than his album tracks.  My favorite release is the 6 track version of the Move EP.   I finished this mix with his guitar driven songs which I think hold up well on their own.  There is the added Bad Brains cover in the you tube mix, which isn't in the download because honestly, I forgot. Ending it all with where he started, in a punk band from the early 80s.

236 - Post Punk Dub

The late 70's early 80's saw the explosion of Post-Punk genre.  Combining teen angst, punk, alternative, funk and industrial all combined in a blender.  With an ear to the expanding reggae scene, many of these artists shared producers with that scene and so dub was a natural byproduct of the recording sessions.  While not like King Tubby, this stuff saw Adrian Sherwood explode with creativity.  Many others followed and created an excellent niche genre of post-punk dub.
