430 Higher than a dub going straight to Barcelona

My mix a couple days ago instructed the listener to slow down, this one continues that and adds a dubby groove to it.  Fun tracks start to finish with a lot of gems to shine brightly.  Came up with an inane title for this as well.

428 Sounds like broken glass

Yes, more 90's-ish alternative music but top notch stuff all the way through.  I'd heard several of these on 102.3 here in Denver and these songs always bring back great memories.  I had a friend in high school that would do almost automatic writing of all the Concrete Blonde lyrics - this guy would fill up notebooks all from memory of every song.  Here is the 7 inch version of The Wagon from Dino Jr, sounds ever so slightly different from the LP mix.  I included Talulah Gosh's self titled track because we recently adopted a puppy named Talulah and I couldn't get this song out of my head.  The Pains of Being Pure At Heart is a fantastic named group, and I've had this track appear on multiple mixes over the years, though first time on this blog.  Next I included my wife's favorite song from the Gits.  Then Placebo, who I was really into back in the early 2000's but haven't listened to since.  Guardian Singles are a newer band I'd only recently stumbled across via some great writeups on the web.  Weed and the subsequent track from Hotline TNT both came to my attention when I saw the latter open up for Quicksand last year.  The former is the earlier project from the same guy.  Threw in the Strokes in-between to split it up and just cause I hadn't hear this track in a while.

Moving way back to Soul Asylum's very early days when they were toying with punk rock.  I still love that cassette "Time's Incinerator" with all its wonky tracks.  Quickly shifting gears and including a rather odd dub from the Psychedelic furs.  Then an iconic track from Radiohead (aren't they all).  This one came across my view via an Instagram post asking musicians what their favorite climaxes were in music.  I've had this 12" on Gold Standard Labs from The Convocation Of for about 20 years, don't know anything else about that group but love this EP.  The Dream Syndicate are back in frequent rotation on my stereo right now.  The Standells track is an oldie but a goodie, which Minor Threat covered to great acclaim.  This Blondie track is in my opinion, better than the final released version, its closer in style to the original and I think its more fun.  Followed that with a banger from The Beat and a comp appearance from Common Rider.  Yeah, this took a short detour from straightforward alternative rock here.   Back to the core, PJ Harvey makes an appearance that really shines.  Bedhead doing Joy Division, and then one of the rarities/extras from the Stone Roses box set of their first album to close it out.

00:00  The Pixies - Surf of Mutilation
02:15  Concrete Blonde - Bajo la Lune Mexicana
07:08  Dinosaur Jr - The Wagon (7" version)
11:44  Talulah Gosh - Talulah Gosh
15:04  The Pains of Being Pure At Heart - Higher Than The Stars
18:44  The Gits - Bob (Cousin O)
21:45  Placebo - Nancy Boy (radio edit)
24:55  Guardian Singles - Tea Lights Exploding
27:35  Weed - Ben's Tour
31:57  The Strokes - Hard To Explain

423 Rhyme and Reason

Time for some more hip hop, I always have a folder collecting my favorite rap tracks. Starting with RJD2 with members of Cannibal Ox and Living Legends with Aesop Rock; great collab track here. A classic because you can never have enough of tha God Rakim. Then Cypress non-album track from the Juice soundtrack. DJ Spooky with Organized Konfusion, remixed for the Subliminally Minded EP. A solid Tribe remix, then a strong collab from Ghostface and BADBADNOTGOOD. Taking it back to a memory from warped tour 96 or so when I saw the Alkaholiks, spewing their OE 40's all over the crowd. Mos Def and Talib Kweli really were one of the best pairings in my opinion, next to Method Man and Redman. Phife Dawg is someone I feel needs more props for his guest appearances, he always came in prime form. Of course, MF Doom, mad respect and sad I had neglected to include him in previous rap mixes, he's one of the best. Next is the Sofa Surfers from their Encounters album (well worth checking out). Hitting hard with Run The Jewels, I love this track and its window rattling bass. Segues perfectly into Roots Manuva on a banger here as well. Vast Aire's second appearance, followed by Dalek's second as well, both with other groups so doesn't break that mixtape rule. And ending it all with a rare novelty track, because I am a big fan of the Zelda series of games and this track really does a great job touching on several versions in that history up to and including Breath of the Wild.

00:00 RJD2 feat Blueprint, Vast Aire, Aesop Rock & Murs - Final Frontier (Remix)
04:06 Eric B & Rakim - Don't Sweat The Technique
08:13 Cypress Hill - Shoot 'em Up
11:45 DJ Spooky feat Prince Poetry and Pharoah Monch - Rekonstruction (Rhyme and Reason mix)
15:23 A Tribe Called Quest - Electric Relaxation (Properly Relaxed Mix)
20:25 Ghostface Killer with BADBADNOTGOOD feat Elzhi - Gunshowers
23:28 The Alkaholiks feat King Tee - DAAAM!
28:06 Black Star - Definition (What We Really Said Version)
31:26 Phife Dawg and Fu-Schnickens - La Schmoove

421 A bucket of slugs posting about punks

This was my jam back in college.  I was on a heavy post-punk kick and would put this 3CD comp in the rotation at most of our parties.  One roommate was into Ska, one Rockabilly, one only listened to the Beastie Boys, so my discs helped round that out and make a few casual listeners scratch their heads.

The name of this mix comes from the Nothing's Going To Happen site, which consistently posts excellent mixes.  I've found many times when I am struggling to find a very specific and very odd track, they usually have posted it somewhere on their site.  For this post punk mix, instead of ripping my own CDs (which I'd have to dig through boxes in my basement for) most of what I wanted was already comped by Slug.  I did add several to what they'd provided, and also found several new gems in their mixes I'd not have come across otherwise.

421 Bob Mould

Growing up I always liked Bob Mould's projects, however it wasn't until about 2 or 3 years ago when I really started to love the music.  My friend Chris is a lifelong fanatic of his works, and for his housewarming gift I bought two books about Bob. That really prodded me to listen to more of his works again.  I nabbed a copy of Zen Arcade and Copper Blue on vinyl and haven't looked back.  I then dove in deep and checked out some of his other projects like Blowoff and Loudbomb.  I kept this mix in a bit of a shuffle, with Husker Du, Sugar and solo works in a pretty steady rotation.  I ended it with his only remix, of the band Low which is pretty wild and unexpected.

414 Don't Say No to the Red Plateau

Call this part two of the "Air travel" mix from a couple days ago, as it is more tracks that were recollected based on the Mojo "Pigs Might Fly" compilation.  Always love the Jane and her husband collaborations.  Included a mid-late period Can track off Saw Delight, an album I don't listen to as often as their earlier more iconic works.  Mummy Dust Trippers is a leftover track from when I compiled the Unexpected Gamelan series.  Ulan Bator is a quirky fun post-rock group from France.  I'd had this track sitting in a folder for years waiting for the right mix to include it in.  Josefin Ohrn is an artist I came across via that Mojo comp and started seeking out whatever else I could find from them.  Orthodox is a doom metal band, but here they're somewhat less heavy and more psychedelic - I like to think of this song as a doom laden free jazz version of "The End" by the doors; maybe that's a stretch.  Larsen is a group I'd not have paid much attention to if not for the Nurse With Wound collaboration.  I tend to find a lot of music through that kind of association.  The Quickspace track is from an old krautrock/motoric compilation I made about 10-15 years back, and reused it here.  Pretty sure I have those old mixes slated for upload soon so it'll be duplicated there.  I came across a "demos and rarities" version of James Plotkin's "The Joy Of Disease" and refamiliarized myself with the wonderful music there.  Ending with a track from that Mojo comp with ties this up nicely.

00:00  Jane Weaver - Electric Mountain (Andy Votel Analogue Mountain Instro)
04:15  Can - Don't Say No
10:42  Mummy Dust Trippers - Cacti-Crypt Metamorphosis Bells

43:43  Quickspace - Lob It
46:00  James Plotkin - Red Plateau

413 Derangments in the Mountains

This starts off with some solid trip hop and downtempo tracks that'll get ya groovin. Then a climactic track from Aereogramme leading into some heavier stuff and dubs, all keeping that same vibe.  The Fireman was a nice find I stumbled upon, I'm sure I'm very late to the game.  Its Youth and Paul McCartney, a pairing I never imagined could work but it does.  Trevor Hall is my meditation coach's favorite musician, and glad he has some dubs out there that are top notch.  Goth Babe is played on my local radio station a lot and I can't ever turn it off when I hear it.  Tara Jane O'Neil puts a great spin on a classic everyone should know and sign along to.  Then a super rare Police track, had a good discussion with a friend last weekend on how he hates the Police, and I hate Aerosmith - maybe this track would change his mind, its like no other version of Roxanne I've heard.  Numun is a side project from SUSS, who I covered on my Ambient Americana series.  Then ending with All India Radio for a chill letdown after some of the chaos of this playlist.

411 Air travel is fear of death

I guess this all started from revisiting the Mojo compilation "Pigs Might Fly" from 2017, where the first two tracks are pulled from.  The rest is a psychedelic trip through many styles and sub-genres all around the hauntology and post-rock areas ending with a head trip from Achim Reichel which came from my frequent revisiting of the Nurse With Wound list.  Should be obvious after that month of electronic remixes I needed a palate cleanser.

412 Ornithology Love Theme From A State of Malaise

Back to what I love most, odd music.  Stuff that is mesmerizing and difficult, bizarre and rare.  A fun journey that bounces around but leaves a smile on my face.

Julie's Haircut doing a cover of Jodorowsky.  Blind Cave Salamander I only know of because of the Nurse With Wound Connection.  I don't recall where I can across Memotone, sounding like The Caretaker and Broadcast meeting in a Dashiell Hammett novel.  Andrzej Korzynski coming in from the Possession soundtrack.  Then David Tibet and HOH acting as bizarre loung singers.  Dif Juz in their first of two appearances here, doing a bit of post-rock/dub.  HNAS doing their thing to the sounds of the swinging sixties.  John Grant (from the Czars) paired up with Chris and Cosey for this remix, with the best line about Scanners in it.  Taking it back on that tip to a favorite from Throbbing Gristle which led perfectly into this fun one from XTC and an outtake from the 3rd Reich album by the Residents.

Huelsenbeck from a Can tribute album. Then Akos Stefi perking things up with this fun ditty that may just get stuck in your head.  Bunnygrunt doing things right by covering the theme to a favorite long time show.  Cosmo Sheldrake is one I heard on the radio and thought it so unique I had to pull over and look up the song on the stations playlist so I wouldn't forget it.  Dif Juz's second appearance, an excerpt from the lengthy SWNN track.  Leven Signs is another I am fuzzy on where I came across them, likely when I was researching artists for my unexpected Gamelan mixes.  Der Blutharsch from their middle period, just before they went all psychedelic rock.  This one features Geoffrey D from the excellent Derniere Volonte.  A bootleg peel session featuring Alien Sex Fiend.  Making things uncomfortable with a Time Stereo artist, live ESP from the ESP Beetles which is more than likely Warn Defever and Davin Brainard.  And Leven Signs bringing it home again with some chaotic belly dance music.

00:00  Julie's Haircut - The Tarot
06:24  Blind Cave Salamander - Ljubljana
10:34  Memotone - The Magpie
13:31  Andrzej Korzynski - Opetanie 2

33:28  XTC - Short Leave Ornithology (Another 1950)

All good things must come to an end.  My marathon of remix overviews has run its course, or more accurately I've run out of ideas.  I had a couple more planned but don't quite have the time to sort through all the tracks.  I'll revisit those sometime in the future.

Of course, I'm always open to suggestions, requests, & recommendations.

I have another series planned soon, on a completely unrelated subject.  Until then I'll return to a few individual and one-off mixes that I've been sitting on for a while.  Thanks to anyone enduring this journey with me, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did making these mixes.

441 The Remix According To Leafcutter John

What? Isn't that the guy that does my yardwork?   Nah, its John Burton, a very obscure and experimental electronic artist.  He's also a member of Polar Bear, the post-Jazz group not the post-Jane's Addiction group.  This music is bizarre and well crafted.  I was the Slag Boom Van Loon track where I first scratched my head over this artist.  Then he started appearing on several of those Wire Tapper CDs and I was hooked.  Here's a good overview of the remixes he's completed, and most of these were new to me when I starting researching his output.

440 The Remix According to The Black Dog (Productions)

I am a big fan of their early works, Bytes and Spanners are incredible albums.  I first came across them via the Trance Europe Express compilation, then the Bjork remixes.  I know they splintered early on and one member left to become Plaid.  Black Dog dropped "productions" from their name and the music evolved in style as well.  I had another 20 or so remixes for this mix that I didn't include as that musical evolution seemed to subdue their wonkyness in my opinion.  So the remixes here are all showcasing the early years and the stuff that had a bit more flair than the average electronic remix tends to be.

439 The Remix According To The Remote Viewer

Goodness, where to start.  The Remote Viewer is a project of Craig Tattersall and Andrew Johnson, both ex-members of Hood, who now work together as Famous Boyfriend.  Craig is also part of The Boats, The Humble Bee, The Sea, The Seaman and the Tattered Sail, and others I'm sure I'm forgetting.  As for The Remote Viewer, I like how their discogs description sums up their sound, "They make diligently processed melancholic pop which combines the aesthetics of early 90s miserabilism and the technical astuteness of contemporary electronica."  Plus, sharing their name with one of Coil's finest albums.

00:00  Origamibiro - Ballerina Platform Shoes
05:12  Bracken - We Cut The Tapes and Scatter
09:22  Atone - Seul
12:49  Acetate Zero - Remote Viewer Version
16:44  Third Eye Foundation - What Is It With You
23:08  Accelera Deck - Untitled
28:16  epic45 - Walk Led To Happiness
32:50  Benoit Pioulard - Hawkeye
37:35  Austin Benjamin Trio - The Doublethinkers
42:52  Brael & Tokyo Bloodworm - Untitled 1
47:53  epic45 - The Village Is Asleep
55:27  Tokyo Bloodworm - Mergers and Occupations
61:05  Ian Hawgood - A Film By The Remote Viewer
