Probably one of my earliest introductions to Jim O’Rourke, and Microstoria to be honest. Instant Coffee! Is a one-time project by Lisle Ellis (jazz bassist), M.C. Schmidt of Matmos, and Jason Willett of Half Japanese (and other fun bands). The music is as absurd as you can imagine from them. Object beings is an early assembly of members that would later grow to fame on AntiCon records (DoseOne and Why? with a couple others). Pan American from their debut album, which was still more aligned with early Labradford sound, both of which evolved beautifully into something greater than their parts. Oval doing what they do, without the partnership of Mouse on Mars from the Microstoria projects. Lawrence English and Stephen Vitiello here and the “with Brendan” happens to be Brendan Canty from Fugazi. Then Rapoon and Zoviet*France leftovers from the aforementioned album review project elsewhere. Bourbonese Qualk felt like the right follow up there, leading to Brokeback which is the side project led by Tortoise’s Douglas McCombs, and this track features vocals from Stereolab’s Mary Hansen performing a song from “Night of the Hunter.” World Standard getting appropriately spooky for late October. The Triple Tree and L’Orchestre Noir are Tony Wakeford (Sol Invictus) projects and showing his focus outside the normal noir folk he’s known for. I really am enjoying the post-reunion Swans albums. They’re something totally different and yet familiar, I just have to set aside some time and focus as they are all filled with lengthy and rewarding tracks.
