One of my favorite drum and bass turned free jazz artists. I was quite into raves for a spell, and "68 Million Shades..." was my usual road trip music heading up and back from events. That one, and the "Everything But The Girl vs Drum and Bass EP." SHJ really had an evolution with "Treader" then "Disappeared", so it wasn't THAT out of place when the free jazz album "Masses" was released as part of the Blue Series with Matthew Shipp; actually that whole series is incredible. I suppose it isn't that far fetched that they hop genres as Ashley Wales did start in the post punk band Five or Six.
It took me a while to track it down in a local shop, though I did eventually acquire a copy of "Oddities" which bridges the gap between their DnB and Free Jazz with a set of experimental and ambient tracks that are just wonderful.
Here we are 25 years later, and I felt I needed to pull together the remaining missing pieces into this "Oddities Vol 2." Remixes, comp tracks, and a real highlight for me is the progression of Galapagos, which started as a remix of Tortoise and ended somewhere very different.
