579 The Remix According to Mr Scruff

I've always been a casual fan of Mr Scruff's work.  I like his style and have several of his albums, yet nothing has ever jumped out as amazing or one of my favorites.  Still, he's got quite a style and a very extensive set of remixes out there.  My list below is a little different from Future Vintage's available mix on YouTube.

602 The Remix According to Ultramarine

For commenter Nimrod, a request to highlight Ultramarine in this series was very welcomed.  I had several of these tracks in my library already, and hadn't given them the attention they deserved.  That opener by Black Hearted Brother is worth the price of admission for sure.  I did also include the self-remix of Saratoga as I just enjoy it so much, even though they sampled the Eagles who I detest.

00:00  Black Hearted Brother - Got Your Love
06:04  Chris Coco - It an Tells Ya
12:27  Nav Katze - Nobody Home
19:04  The Boo Radleys - Lazarus

578 The Remix According to Reload

Reload is was a solo, then duo project from the guys behind Global Communications.  The music is very similar in style and I think credits for each project kind of blend together.  Still, here is the set of remixes attributed to Reload which may or may not have been a solo work of Mark Pritchard.

Also 3 year anniversary of this blog.  Yay, I suppose.

00:00  Global Communication - 14:31
05:11  Slowdive - In Mind (The 147 Take)

577 The Remix According to Sub Dub

Sub Dub is the paring of John Ward with Raz Mesinai.  Without doing my normal research on artists I was listening to, I did come upon Badawi and Sub Dub independently.  It was a couple years later that I made the connection and only made me appreciate each of those projects even more.  Sub Dub didn't have a huge output, though what they did release is all very solid.  I still break out my copy of "Dancehall Malfunction" often as its just a great album.

00:00  Adham Shaikh - Emergence
07:40  Arto Lindsay - Q-Samba
13:47  Zone Smut - Sub Dub Rub (Holyfield vs Tyson remix Totally Killed by Sub Dub)

576 The Remix According to Doctor Rockit

Doctor Rockit is the type of electronic music I never really thought I'd be into, yet I am strangely drawn to his quirky groovy stylings.  I previously included the Matmos remix by Surgeon, and here is the other one by Doctor Rockit from that EP.

575 The Remix According to Isan

Integrated Services Analogue Network, shortened to ISAN is a group of guys that really have carved out their own distinct sound in electronic music.  Everything they produce (original and remixes) sounds consistent, despite the diversity of the source material.  I found way too many remixes of theirs so I chose my favorites to include here; three mixes worth.  The mixes are about an hour each because even as a fan I can only take so much of this style in one sitting.

574 The Remix According to Witchman

John Roome is the Witchman, and Gold Water, and a member of The Unknown Ghosts with Alex Paterson of the Orb.  His work under Witchman is a lot of broken beat, drum n bass, and dark ambient, where Goldwater is more straight up dark ambient with illbient tendencies.  The Unknown Ghosts is listed as dub, though I don't think it fits my description of that.

Anyway, here's a set of his remixes that in my opinion are a mixed bag.  Some like the Bowery Electric, or the Jess Franco remix track track are up there in my favorites of his work, while others like Gary Numan was just not what I wanted.

00:00  Jess Franco/Manfred Hubler/Siegfried Schwab - People's Playground (Soledad Dub)
08:15  Finitribe vs Witchman - The Bells (Witchman's Outcast mix)
15:05  Bowery Electric - Without Stopping

573 The Remix According to Jim O'Rourke

Jim O'Rourke has quite the list of credentials and he continues to find new and incredible opportunities to collaborate with artists from all over the globe and genres.  I think I first came across his name when a friend left "Eureka" at my house and I really dove into it.  Gastr Del Sol was another group I was introduced to at this time, and then not long afterwards I saw his collaborations with Sonic Youth and it was official I was a big fan of his work.

Here are two mixes showcasing his diverse background remixing artists.

572 The Remix According to Bundy K Brown

Mr. Kenneth Brown, also known as Bundy K Brown is part of the inner circle of Chicago musicians that I associate with Tortoise.  He was a member of Bastro/Gastr Del Sol and was one of the founding members of Tortoise.  He bounced around as a sound engineer, producer, mixer and remixer for several artists.  Here's a wonderful overview of his remix work which I find both engaging and relaxing at the same time.

571 The Remix According to Rapoon

Robin Storey was one of the creators of Zoviet France and remained an active member through 1992.  He also rejoined as part of Reformed Faction.  His solo catalog is just as immense and dances the line between dreamlike ambience, tribal rhythms, and dark industrial soundcapes.  I've owned several of his releases and love them all.  Robin has also paired up with Nigel Ayers for the Hank & Slim project of dirty country ambience, and also with Andrew Diey (Black Faction) for the New Cult of the Sun Moon project.

That Xingu Hill track is a remix of Rapoon, not the other way around.

00:00  Black Faction - Caligulan
04:27  Muslimgauze - Night Train to Heliopolis

570 The Remix According to Spacetime Continuum

Jonah Sharp's project focused on experimental global ambient music.  He is also owner and operator of Reflective Records.  This is another short but solid set of tunes.  I will thrilled to see he remixed Ponga, a band with a very unique take on free-jazz that I was introduced to about 20 years back from some friends in France.  The Muslimgauze track is what I really wanted to highlight here as it is gorgeous.

00:00  MLO - Wimborn
10:24  Muslimgauze - From the Edge
16:01  Nine Inch Nails - The Perfect Drug
21:43  Me-Sheen - Electrostatic

569 The Remix According to Bandulu

They first came to my attention via the U.F.Orb and Slowdive remixes.  Years later I picked up a couple of their EPs and was quite impressed with their original material, carving out their own niche in the genre.  Back in the day, I had downloaded some of their tracks, only later to find out that they were mislabeled Sub Dub songs, which is how I ended up finding that group. Those early days on the internet file sharing were wild, you never knew what you'd actually end up with.  I don't know how it relates, but that picture did come up on a google image search for Bandulu.

00:00  Slowdive - In Mind (Out Mind)

568 The Remix According to Surgeon

Surgeon is an artist that first caught my attention on Matmos' "California Rhinoplasty EP."  I found it humorous that the two remixers were Surgeon and Docktor Rockit on a medical/surgery themed album.  Shortly after, I found them again appearing on Faust's "Freispiel" remix album which I really enjoyed.  As I was researching this playlist, I found I did already have several other of Surgeon's appearances in my stash of CDs.  I also found that he had completed remixes for dozens of other artists I've never heard of.   So... if any other fans are out there, please send me some recommendations on his work as I don't have much at this time.  What I do have is stuff that I like a lot.

00:00  Coil - Teenage Lightning
07:56  Monolake - Alaska

567 The Remix According to 4Hero

4 Hero certainly have cemented their place in electronic music history, through their influence on Drum and Bass and Broken Beat genres.  They have matured over the years and deliver consistently great material at every twist and turn.  I was never a fan of "Mr. Kirk" which I suppose was their breakout single.  It wasn't until I heard "The Paranormal in 4 Forms" on the Macro Dub Infection compilation that I really got into their music.  They have released a tremendous number of remixes, and I selected a small list of my favorites here.  Mostly just what I had in my collection as the basis.

00:00  Talvin Singh - Traveller (4 Hero's Dollis Hill Futebol Mix)

566 The Remix According to Solex

Solex is the laptoptronica pop project of record shop owner Elisabeth Esselink.  Utilizing the records in her own record store, she assembled her music on an antique 8-track recorder, singing original lyrics over her musical creations.  Several fun albums were released, and just this handful of remixes.  Solex was also one of the artists that participated in the "In the Fishtank" series of improvisations.

This is a short one, though it is a lot of fun.

00:00  Malaria! - Your Turn To Run (Solex Remix)
03:27  Shinju Gumi - Senor Gumi (Solex Remix)
06:16  Twilight Circus Dub Sound System - Kik (Solex 'Kiks for Niks' Remix)

565 The Remix According to Zion Train

Zion Train are a reggae dance group that blends styles to something their own.  Founding member Neil Perch taught himself production and composition after completing a masters in biochemistry.  The band ran their own label Universal Egg as a way to release their own music, but quickly expanded to other like minded and sounding artists.

Yes there is an existing playlist from Future Vintage for Zion Train, however mine has some tracks not shared there.

564 The Remix According to Eat Static

Eat Static is so much more than ex-members of Ozric Tentacles, though that is quite a credential on one's resume.  Merv and Joie stated that they took their name from Star Trek II The Wrath of Khan, which is pretty cool in my book.  Despite having a pretty clear style for their original music, these remixes really do showcase their diversity and strength manipulating the source material.

00:00  John Buzon Trio - Caravan
05:43  Charlie Watts Jim Keltner Project - Airto
11:08  Suns of Arqa feat John Cooper Clarke - The Truth Lies Therein (remix)

The Remix According To... Continued

Love a good remix. I have been introduced to so many artists because they remix or were remixed by someone else that caught my attention. This series of mixes explores even more situations like this and highlights the style and influence that remixer has on other's source material. Sometimes there is a diamond in the rough, other times the remixes are consistent and noteworthy.

Previously I had done my Ambitious April series in 2024 where I made 47 mixes covering 32 artists. I had done one-off overviews of eight more artists before then, and four more since then. Now I've got 19 more artists to shine a light on, and who knows maybe a couple more might sneak in while I get these all uploaded over the coming weeks. This all is my homage and continuation of the works set forth by Future Vintage, who I noticed is still very active on YouTube. I don't think there is a lot of overlap in what each of us is focused on.

563 Spring Heel Jack - Oddities Vol 2

One of my favorite drum and bass turned free jazz artists.  I was quite into raves for a spell, and "68 Million Shades..." was my usual road trip music heading up and back from events.  That one, and the "Everything But The Girl vs Drum and Bass EP."  SHJ really had an evolution with "Treader" then "Disappeared", so it wasn't THAT out of place when the free jazz album "Masses" was released as part of the Blue Series with Matthew Shipp; actually that whole series is incredible.  I suppose it isn't that far fetched that they hop genres as Ashley Wales did start in the post punk band Five or Six.

It took me a while to track it down in a local shop, though I did eventually acquire a copy of "Oddities" which bridges the gap between their DnB and Free Jazz with a set of experimental and ambient tracks that are just wonderful.

Here we are 25 years later, and I felt I needed to pull together the remaining missing pieces into this "Oddities Vol 2."   Remixes, comp tracks, and a real highlight for me is the progression of Galapagos, which started as a remix of Tortoise and ended somewhere very different.

1  SHJ - Sweep
2  SHJ - A Permanent Theme
3  SHJ - Double Edge Dub
4  Outernational Meltdown - Hungry on Arrival (remix)
5  Statik Sound System - Revolutionary Pilot (Slow Dub)
6  Ben Neill - Tunnel Vision (Holland Tunnel mix)
7  Techno Animal - Heavy Water (re-mix)
8  Joi - Everybody Say Yeah (remix)
9  Everything But The Girl - Walking Wounded (dub)
10  Tortoise - Galapagos Version 1 (remix)
11  SHJ - Galapagos II
12  SHJ - Galapagos III
13  Alexis Taylor - Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue (Hackney Rd Dub)
