488 Zack de la Rocha's other appearances

I recall a bit of shock when I put on Lyricist's Lounge and heard Zack doing a collaboration with KRS-One, and it was quite good.  Based on that, I started to seek out all his other guest vocal performances and came up with this list, I think it has most of them.  I didn't include One Day As A Lion as that was on a recent mix, and Farside where he plays guitar because I just didn't like it and it didn't fit in anywhere on this mix.  He also played guitar in Hard Stance, so included that as it fit the vibe towards the end of this mix.

481 Roots Manuva Guest Spots

Roots Manuva aka Rodney Smith is a name I'd heard and seen everywhere but took a while before diving into his catalog.  I think it was the Pharoahe Monch track that first drew my attention, and then I was excited to hear his dub album "Dub come save me."  Of course, the collab track with Jurassic 5 really stood out, and a guest spot with Massive Attack doesn't hurt one's street cred.  Yeah, pretty much every artist on this mix is quite an honor to work with, so Roots Manuva is certainly doing something right.

470 MC Dälek Appearances

Will Brooks aka MC Dälek first caught my attention on the 2nd Gen track and/or remixed by Techno Animal.  His lyrics and flow were mind blowing.  I quickly dove in and found the Classical Homicide and Megaton tracks with Techno Animal, and shortly after they released "Brotherhood of the Bomb" with the track Hell.  That solidified it and I quickly bough all the vinyl and CDs I could find from Dälek.  I was not disappointed.  Nary a dull track in his discography, including solo project IconAclass.

487 Counting 0 to 30

Nothing original here, this has to be a common theme for playlists.  This is my take.  Had originally planned just a one to ten, then remembered this great Godflesh cover, and this Nick Cave song came on rotation so I felt I needed to continue it.   I almost stopped at 21 as it was hard searching for this title as 99% of the search results were for Twenty One Pilots, ugh!  At least I remembered King Crimson, which kept this one moving along.   Honestly, after thirty I really struggled to find anything I cared enough about to include.

I really like how much this mix jumps around, I find it fun and entertaining.

480 Hip Hop Mash-Ups pt1

Novelty music for sure, however some of these really work well.  In my opinion that's a rarity as there seems to be a flood of average mash-ups out there.  Sometimes there is alchemy and these two mixes really showcase the tracks that keep me coming back looking for more mash-ups.  A couple are loosely in this genre like the Kid 666 track, that is Kid606 remixing Missy Elliot, and its included here for the awesome inclusion of A-Ha's "Take On Me" at the end.  Girl talk is more like a massive mash-up mixtape, with some really great spots.  That Cut Chemist remix is not really a mashup, but its got such a strong use of Bauhaus that I had to include it.

00:00  Amerigo Gazaway - B.I.G. Poppa's Got A Brand New Bag (The Notorious J.B.'s: The B.I.G. Payback)
03:48  The Wudos Band - Ayno Tellin (Wu Tang Clan vs Budos Band Mix Tape)

486 One-Off Collaborations A

This is kind of a grey area as it relates to my previous "supergroups" post.  This time I tried to focus on more side projects and one album collaborations between some artists.  There are certainly some loose interpretations of this theme here, still a great selection across these three mixes.

This first one is focused on dark ambient, industrial, and neofolk music.

483 Supergroups and side projects A

My criteria for this mix was to focus on groups/bands that put out at a minimum one full album under this title; so no one off projects that only recorded a track for a tribute album for example.  The group must be made up of members from at least two significant other bands.

I know there are so many more that are worth looking into, so please share more ideas with me.

00:00  Fantomas - Experiment in Terror (Faith No More, Slayer, Melvins)
02:40  Palms - Shortwave Radio (Deftones/Isis)

485 Same Name

There are many occasions where bands have the same names.  Sometimes ending in lawsuits, other times they're pretty chill about it.  One I'm familiar with is Dinosaur Jr - they were originally called Dinosaur, then a group called Dinosaurs sued them saying it would be confusing for their fans, so they changed to Dinosaur Jr.  In hindsight, Dinosaurs wasn't more than a one off side project, and Dinosaur Jr has certainly eclipsed them in the history of rock N roll.   Another one of recent memory is when Lady Antebellum came to the late realization that their band name had racial undertones, so they changed to Lady A.  Not knowing there was an established jazz/R&B singer that went by that name.   The original Lady A sued and lost against the big powerhouse that is pop country lawyers.  The band tried to remove the racism from their name, only to sue a black woman out of her legal property and title.  Hmmmm.....

Here I've included several examples where bands share the same name, usually without conflict.  A few are loose, like Mono vs Monos.  Others are far too similar, like both electronic artists called Gas, or both thrash metal bands called Slayer.  I did find three called Black Lung, though the reggae artist goes by Blaak Lung.   I know the listener may see the name Ghost, and think I was going with that hard rock band.  No, sorry, I can't stand them and didn't want to include them here so I went with the other bands using that name.  Most of this mix is to illustrate the theme as I'm not a really big fan of most of these shared named groups (well I do like one of them enough, its their doppelganger that doesn't bring me much joy, like Him the goth metal band, they are just awful).

There are some examples I stayed away from, Like The Beat who now operate in two separate but distinct factions of former members.  Same with Faust or Goblin. When the original band split up, the members all claimed rights to the name and kept using it.  Those got a bit confusing so I omitted them from this mix.

I split this between familiars (to me), and doppelgangers (new ones to me, mostly).  Some like Monos, Gas, Jane, Death are grey areas as I'm very familiar with both sides.   The Spotify playlist doesn't have a lot of these, so it doesn't work as well for the comparisons.

Familiars:
00:00  Slayer - Black Magic
04:01  Death - Baptized in Blood
08:26  Ain Soph - Uomini Perduti
11:03  Jane - Its A Fine Day

475 Early Bands

I don't recall if I was inspired by the Vinyl on Demand box set of John Balance's early works before COIL, or talking to my kids about the Green River/Mother Love Bone/Temple of the Dog/Mudhoney/Pearl Jam evolution.  Maybe it is my talking point about how Soul Asylum were much better when they used to be a punk band.  Nevertheless, I wanted to dust off some tracks of the early bands that helped launch musical careers of artists that are more well known for their later projects.  Some of these are very well known, like Warsaw, Gen X and Throbbing Gristle.  Others are a bit more obscure and were fun to track down.  Some tracks are low quality, like The Castiles, and I intentionally went with the demo version for Napalm Death.  The track from Earth is a fan made mix, as the original version I have of this is only a minute long, so someone cleverly mixed it onto of itself to make the track a little longer.

This is a good reminder for life.  Pay attention to where you came from, so you know where you are going.

Crap, once I finished this mix, I realized I neglected Inside Out, the first band of Zach De La Rocha from Rage Against the Machine, and also Blind Illusion featuring a young Les Claypool.  Oops!

00:00  101ers - Letsagetabitarockin' (The Clash)
02:02  Loud Fast Rules - Black and Blue (demo) (Soul Asylum)

10:12  Proud Crass Fools - Happy (Soul Asylum)
13:52  Vatican commandos - Why Must I Follow (Moby)
15:39  Deep Wound - In My Room (Dinosaur Jr)
16:41  Napalm Death - Abbatoir (Godflesh, Scorn/Mick Harris)
20:19  Warsaw - At a later date (Joy Division)
23:30  The Boys Next Door - The Nightwatchman (Nick cave)
25:30  Strontium 90 - Visions of the Night (The Police)
28:21  Earth - When I came down (Black Sabbath)
30:23  Tippi Tikarrass - Ottar (Sugarcubes/Bjork)
32:57  Easy Cure - Need Myself (The Cure)

476 Filling Jane's Void

The recent drama on the most recent and very short-lived Janes Addiction reunion tour, prompted me to reminisce about how much I loved them back in the 90's, and was utterly disappointed with their first reunion.  They even joked about this on a How I Met Your Mother episode.  As such, I decided to pull together a fun set of tracks from all the other bands that the members had participated in, hence the title of filling the void left by their absence.  I stuck with the original core four line-up of Janes Addiction: Perry, Stephen, Eric, and Dave.

Psi Com is Perry's band before Jane's, and his attempt at some kind of gothic post-punk which works in small doses..  Porno for Pyros is Perry and Stephen's post-Jane's band.  Deconstruction is Dave, Eric and Stephen right after the original Jane's break up.  Polar Bear is Eric's subsequent solo project.  Dave did several one off projects for tributes: Honeymoon Stitch for Joy Division, Camp Freddie for David Bowie, Ruined Eye for Germs.  Stephen Perkins did a few of these as well: Class of 99 for Pink Floyd, Cold Ethyl for Alice Cooper, and Broke Dick Dog for James Brown however I was too nervous to search that term to find their music.  Stephen also was the exceptional drummer for the Suicidal Tendencies side project Infectious Grooves.  Summer Moon is a one time supergroup with members of The Strokes, Uh Huh Her and The Airborne Toxic Event, with Stephen on drums.  The Panic Channel is Dave and Stephen with the then bassist of Janes Addiction Chris Chaney, joined by Steve Isaacs as the vocalist, whom I'm unfamiliar with.  NHC is similar in that Chris Chaney and Dave are here again, this time with Taylor Hawkins from Foo Fighters fame. Banyan is truly a supergroup; this track features Mike Watt, Stephen, John Frusciante, Willie Waldman and Joey Klaparda.  Other tracks feature Flea, Buckethead, Nels Cline and tons of others that I am only a little bit familiar with.

The side projects I didn't include are Broke Dick Dog, Li'l Pit which I couldn't find, Satellite Party which is Perry's band and I heard there was band drama where he gave his girlfriend too big of a role and the rest of the band quit, and finally Red Hot Chili Peppers where Dave was a short time guitarist while John Frusciante was on one of his multiple breaks. I was not a fan of this era, Mother's Milk was the last album I bought and enjoyed from them.

477 Ministry - Land of Rape and Honey Extras

Somewhere, sometime ago I saw a post on some social media site where a person shared a picture of what was supposedly the demo track list of "Land of Rape and Honey."  That happens to be my favorite Ministry release, so I was excited to dive into this newfound knowledge.

Demo version of album:
Stigmata
Abortive
Ingrate
Apathy
The Idiot
See More Spine
I'm Sick
The Idiot (version)
Blackened Heart

The description also clarified that many of these songs did end up getting released in some form.  I pulled together what I could find in my collection and I think it makes for a great supplement to this album in its proper form.

I included the remix of "Stigmata" and "Tonight We Murder" from the 12" single.  I also included "I Prefer" and "Hizbollah" as those were CD bonus tracks and not on my original copy of the album.  "Self Annoyed" is a track from the Trax! Box and is from this period.  "Show Me Your Spine" from PTP is close enough in title to "See More Spine" and from the same era so I figured they were likely related.  1000 Homo DJ's track "Apathy" is clearly what is represented here, as are "Idiot" and "Blackened Heart" which Lead Into Gold included on their "Chicks & Speed: Futurism" album.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find anything related to "Ingrate" or "I'm Sick."  Just have to imagine what those may have sounded like.  Ultimately, nothing really new or all that rare here just a fun extra chuck of music from a great era of an influential band.

484 Hard Rock Early Metal - overlooked in the 70s

Back in action, thanks for your patience as I focused on self-care the last few weeks.  I'd been playing with this track list for about a year.  Then we had a massive snowstorm which kept my kids home from school for 2 1/2 days.  They were going stir crazy, which made my day job difficult as I work from home.  One of my kids' friend's dad sent a recommendation to check out Somewhere Stranger's album "Delta Minor."   That kicked me into high gear to share the below Spotify playlist which was well received.  All us dads need some good classic rock to pass the time during busy work days.

Also, I cancelled my Mixcloud membership.  I'm open to suggestions if there is another free site to host these files for streaming.  Otherwise, its download for the mixed version, or Spotify for the mostly complete track lists (I continue my frustration with that service as I find so many songs and artists are unavailable there).

More to come

I've not completely fallen off the face of the Earth.   Just taking some time to myself, coming up for air after the election and assessing priorities, being present for my family, and seeking some self care.  That self care is listening to music and making more mixes, so I've got plenty coming this way soon enough.

For now, check the archives and let me know of any broken links or requests for new topics to dive into.

472 Lee Scratch Perry - Skanking With The Upsetters vol 2

This year's Record Store Day heralded the release of Lee 'Scratch' Perry & The Upsetters - Skanking With The Upsetters, a collection of his "skank" titled tracks.  I was thrilled when I heard this was coming out, only to be sadly disappointed when the only record store in my small town didn't receive any copies.  I came home, and diligently went through my library and found I could rebuild that tracklist with the files I already had.   In this effort, I found another 24 or so tracks with "Skank" in the title that are either from Lee Sratch Perry, The Upsetters, or from his productions.   Hence, I went forth and pulled this second volume together.  Spotify only had 16 of the 22 tracks.
